A 16 year-old Gambian boy appears to have been the only one of some 150 migrants to survive when their inflatable sank yesterday off the coast near Sabratha.
The boy was picked up by a Spanish frigate, transferred to an Italian vessel and landed in Lampedusa. Safely ashore, he said that those on the raft with him had included five children and several pregnant women.
All had drowned, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) told Reuters. The boy had survived by grabbing a fuel tank after the raft began to deflate and take water. He added that the migrants had been launched from Sabratha.
Yesterday, the Sabratha’s mayor said that the municipality had lost control over local fuel smugglers. He did not mention people smugglers, who appear to operate just as freely as those who are stealing subsidised fuel from under the noses of the authorities.

The updated country report on Greece provides a thorough analysis of the transformation of the Greek asylum system in the light of the closure of the Western Balkan route and the EU-Turkey statement. The report offers detailed statistics and practical insights into the workings of the asylum procedure, reception and detention of asylum seekers, as well as content of international protection.
Substantial asylum reforms, many of which driven by the implementation of the EU-Turkey statement, took place in 2016. Law (L) 4375/2016, adopted in April 2016 and transposing the recast Asylum Procedures Directive into Greek law, was subsequently amended in June 2016 and March 2017, while a draft law transposing the recast Reception Conditions Directive has not been adopted yet.
The impact of the EU-Turkey statement has been a de facto divide in the asylum procedures applied in Greece. Asylum seekers arriving after 20 March 2016 are subject to a fast-track border procedure and excluded from relocation in practice.

When arriving in Athens at the beginning of August 2015, I was still thinking about the Euro-crisis and the developments in Greece. Just about a month before, an overwhelming majority of the Greek population had rejected the measures proposed by the EU Commission, and just a few days later, the Syriza-ANEL-government conceded to an agreement, which followed from the notorious marathon-summit in Brussels and which imposed even harsher measures than those rejected by the referendum. The roller-coaster ride of the last six months – from the election victory of Syriza in January 2015 via the preliminary agreement on February 20, when both the Greek state’s finances and the perceived window of opportunity were rapidly shrinking, up to the referendum and the imposition of the third memorandum – had come to a crashing halt. Seventeen held after activists prevent departure of flight taking asylum seekers and other migrants to Nigeria and Ghana
Police have arrested 17 anti-deportation protesters who locked themselves to an aircraft at Stansted airport, preventing a charter flight due to remove asylum seekers and other migrants from the UK from taking off.
The protesters locked themselves to the wing of a Titan Airways flight and refused to move. All 17 protesters involved with the action have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass and are now in police custody.
Essex police said they had received reports that a group of protesters gained access to Stansted airport’s airside at about 9.30pm on Tuesday night. A spokesman said: “We were contacted by Stansted airport after protesters entered and locked themselves on to an aircraft destined for Nigeria. Officers remain at the scene to carry out further investigations. Inquiries are ongoing.”

Es muy fácil traficar con la desesperación. No hay mucho que negociar cuando una de las dos partes está dispuesta a jugarse la vida con tal de escapar de un país para buscarse otra a toda costa. Y hay quien se aprovecha sin escrúpulos de esa desesperanza y pone precio al mercadeo ilegal de personas para embolsarse miles de euros al mes.
En lo que va de año se han recogido de aguas del Estrecho 18 cadáveres, los tres últimos este pasado viernes. Otros muchos lo rozaron. Estuvieron cerca de lograrlo. Más de dos mil han sido rescatados o detenidos cuando ni siquiera se ha completado el primer trimestre de este año. Según datos recogidos por la Subdelegación del Gobierno, ha habido un aumento en la llegada de inmigrantes a la costa gaditana del 135 por ciento con respecto a 2016. Además, el desembarco inusual de dos pateras en una playa de El Puerto la semana pasada acercaba el drama a la Bahía. La presión migratoria ha aumentado notablemente y ese incremento de circulación de pateras también ha provocado la proliferación y el enriquecimiento de las mafias que controlan este dramático ’negocio‘ desde las costas de Marruecos. Pro Asyl kritisiert die Pläne der Europäer, die Mittelmeer-Route bereits in der Sahara zu kappen. Aus Sicht der Menschenrechtsorganisation wird die Maßnahme viele Flüchtlinge treffen.
Die Menschenrechtsorganisation Pro Asyl hat die Pläne der Europäischen Union (EU) für einen strengeren Schutz der südlichen Grenze Libyens kritisiert. „Europa baut im südlichen Libyen eine zweite Mauer auf, damit Flüchtling nicht einmal in die Nähe der Außengrenzen Europas kommen“, sagte Geschäftsführer Günter Burkhardt der „Welt“.
Die Pläne der Europäischen Union richteten sich auch gegen Flüchtlinge, die „aus der Diktatur in Eritrea und vor den Warlords in Somalia fliehen“. Burkhardt sagte: „Die neuen Pläne funktionieren nach dem Motto ,Aus den Augen, aus dem Sinn‘. Je weiter die Flüchtlinge von Europa weg sind, umso weniger regt sich die Öffentlichkeit auf.“

Es ist äußerst befremdlich, wenn Österreichs Außen- und Integrationsminister erklärt, der „NGO-Wahnsinn“ im Mittelmeer müsse ein Ende haben.
In Russland sind NGOs (Nichtregierungsorganisationen) als „ausländische Agenten“ eingestuft, ihre Arbeit wurde so eingeengt, dass sie Putin keinen Ärger mehr bereiten können. Ähnliches versucht Viktor Orbán in Ungarn. In der Türkei spielt die Mentalität mit: Wir brauchen keine ausländischen Helfer, wir schaffen alles selbst.
Da wirkt es äußerst befremdlich, wenn Österreichs Außen- und Integrationsminister auf einem Trip nach Malta erklärt, der „NGO-Wahnsinn“ im Mittelmeer müsse ein Ende haben und die Rettungsarbeit der NGOs erhöhe nur die Zahl der Flüchtlinge, die ertrinken.
