In context of the action day of 18M we visited the Frontex office in Catania this morning.

Here you also find Europol, EASO und Eunavfor Med, together they build the „European Union Regional Task Force (EURTF)“.

Their office is completely unremarkable – or to tell the truth, hidden – you find the address rarely in the internet and no nametag or else indicates who is working behind the curtains. That’s why we wanted to publish the address of the Frontex office, to make it more known also to other visitors.

More than 10,000 asylum seekers from Syria, Iraq and Eritrea have been relocated from Greece to other European Union states since the launch of the bloc’s relocation program in 2015, according to the International Organization for Migration, which is implementing the scheme.

Since the beginning of March, 367 people have left Greece for Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain, bringing the total number of people relocated from Greece to 10,004, IOM said on Friday. Over the same period, another 475 people were relocated from Italy.

The total number of people relocated from Greece and Italy since the program was launched in October 2015 now stands at 14,439, the organization said.

Puntuale, la minaccia è arrivata anche ieri. «Se volete vi mandiamo 15 mila rifugiati al mese e vi chiariamo le idee», ha fatto sapere ai leader europei il ministro degli Interni turco Suleyman Soylu. Ankara è tornata così ad agitare lo spauracchio di una sospensione dell’accordo sui migranti siglato con l’Unione europea esattamente un anno fa, il 18 marzo del 2016. Un’intesa a dir poco discutibile, che permise però a Bruxelles di chiudere la rotta balcanica attraverso la quale nel 2015 passarono centinaia di migliaia di rifugiati alla ricerca disperata di un approdo sicuro in Europa, quasi tutti siriani in fuga dalla guerra civile che, allora come oggi, devasta la Siria.

It has been a year since the signing of the EU-Turkey agreement. The flow of asylum seekers and migrants through the Turkey-Greece corridor has been reduced to a trickle.

By contrast, flows from Libya to Italy continue at a sustained pace, a testament to political and economic hardships on the African continent. The increased movement over the last three years has put the EU under pressure, and has often led to drastic political and policy responses.

Public debate tends to focus too much on criticism and forget the important steps taken to strengthen European governance of asylum and migration. Yet, there have still been at least ten notable developments.

Alles auf Null: Der Neustart in Afghanistan fällt abgeschobenen Flüchtlingen schwer. Während die einen nur mit wirtschaftlichen Nöten kämpfen, schweben andere in Lebensgefahr. Hilfsangebote gibt es wenige.

Badam Haidari lebt im Nirgendwo. 70 Minuten aus Kabul raus, von der Schnellstraße runter, rein in die Berge auf schlammigen Pfaden, nur noch kahle Bäume, Wind und Lehmmauern. Im Januar war Badam aus Deutschland abgeschoben worden. Seitdem ist der 34-Jährige von einer Zuflucht auf Zeit zur nächsten getingelt. Gerade darf er ein paar Tage bei einem alten Mann bleiben, entfernter Familienfreund.

Haidari wartet am Straßenrand. Reingehen? Lieber nicht, sagt Haidari unbehaglich. Wer weiß, wer uns hier sieht. Komm, wir fahren ins Tal und reden im Auto. Haidari schaut regelmäßig über die Schulter. Für ihn ist dies nicht die Heimat. Es ist Feindesland.
