Heute hat Sea-Watch, zusammen mit anderen NGOs, darunter Ärzte ohne Grenzen und Pro Asyl, einen Offenen Brief an den Hohen Flüchtlingskommissar der Vereinten Nationen, Filippo Grandi, veröffentlicht: “Innerhalb der letzten Wochen hat UNHCR wiederholt seine Bereitschaft betont, als Exekutivorgan der europäischen Migrationspolitik zu fungieren, trotz bestehender menschenrechtlicher Bedenken an dieser Politik. Wir betrachten die aktuelle Haltung des UNHCR mit Sorge.”

Der Offene Brief bezieht sich auf das heutige Treffen der Europäischen Kommission mit UNHCR und IOM in Genf. Zur gleichen Zeit befinden sich nun seit über 2 Wochen 40 Überlebende eines Schiffsunglücks an Board des tunesischen Handelsschiffs “SAROST 5”. Sie sollen nun vermutlich nach Tunesien gebracht werden – in ein Land, das nicht einmal ein Asylgesetz besitzt.

Coastguard crackdown leaves thousands in overcrowded facilities, with many more at mercy of smugglers and militia

The number of migrants in Libya’s overcrowded detention centres has almost doubled over the past three months, according to the UN’s migration agency.

Amid a crackdown on Mediterranean crossings by the Italy and EU-backed Libyan coastguard, the number of people being held has swollen from 5,000 to 9,300, with thousands more at the mercy of smugglers in charge of unofficial detention facilities, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.

The figures were revealed as one group accused the Libyan coastguard of failing to assist with the rescue of three people in the Mediterranean, after intercepting a boat carrying 160 people bound near Libya’s coastline. Proactiva Open Arms, a Spanish search and rescue organisation, said it had found one woman alive and another dead, alongside the body of a toddler, amid the drifting remains of a destroyed migrant boat.

GENEVA (Reuters) – Forth-six Ethiopians drowned early on Wednesday and 16 were missing after a smuggler’s boat carrying at least 100 migrants capsized as it approached Yemen, the U.N. migration agency said in a statement.

The boat left the port of Bossasso in Somalia on Tuesday, with 83 men and 17 women on board who were hoping to find work in Yemen and the Arabian Gulf, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said, citing information from survivors.

IOM’s director of operations and emergencies, Mohammad Abdiker, said the Gulf of Aden’s migration tragedy was shameful.

At least 6,872 people have been rescued while trying to enter Spain by sea so far this year, according to the IOM.

Spanish authorities have rescued more than 500 people attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in a bid to reach Europe.

Spain’s maritime rescue service said it pulled 243 people from eight small boats on Sunday, a day after picking 293 others from nine vessels.

Three of the boats located on Sunday were in poor condition and sank shortly after those on board were removed from them.

The operations included plane and helicopter searches, while those rescued were from various countries in north and sub-Saharan Africa.

Erstmals haben eine große Zahl algerischer Menschenrechtsaktivist*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen einen Aufruf gegen die Massenabschiebungen nach Niger und Mali namentlich unterzeichnet. Sie wurden daraufhin vom Roten Kreuz und Massenmedien in Algerien als unpatriotische Aktivist*innen angeprangert. – In ihrem Aufruf fordern sie die algerische Regierung auf, endlich die nationalen und internationalen Rechte der ausländischen Werktätigen und der Flüchtlinge zu beachten.

In dem Aufruf wird nicht der EU-Abschottungsdruck benannt. – In Niger versucht sicht die IOM an die Spitze der Proteste gegen die Wüsten-Abschiebungen aus Algerien zu stellen. Die IOM befördert die Abgeschobenen weiter in ihre Herkunftsländer. Da sie zugleich ein Auffanglager in Agadez betreibt, stellen die Abschiebungen aus Algerien wachsende logistische Herausforderungen für die IOM dar. Zum internationalen Kontext der Massenabschiebungen gehört, dass Algerien nicht an der französisch-westlichen Militärintervention G-5 Sahel teilnimmt, die sich derzeit auf die militärische Aufrüstung der Sahel-Grenzregionen konzentriert.

President Trump has attracted criticism with his nominee to head the United Nations‘ migrant relief organization, Ken Isaacs, as reporters have uncovered tweets by Isaacs expressing anti-Muslim views and support of conspiracy theories.

Who is Ken Isaacs?

Ken Isaacs is a vice president at Shepherd’s Purse, a Christian non-profit relief organization. He previously served as director of foreign disaster assistance for the US Agency for International Development during the George W. Bush administration. In February, Trump picked him to lead the UN’s Office of International Migration, which oversees $1 billion in migrant aid worldwide.

The division between refugee and migrant remains a powerful legal tool. But in today’s world of hypermobility, compartmentalization of international aid along the same lines is illogical and wasteful. Worse, it threatens to exclude many people from much-needed aid because their experiences don’t match strict criteria.

That is not to dispense with the term “refugee.” In this era of record levels of displacement and shrinking protection space, refugee status is crucial for maintaining focus on a specific legal category of people: those who can demonstrate credible fear of persecution. Yet realities on the ground have shown that refugees have multiple identities, deploy various coping strategies and often defy tidy categories.

Offiziellen Zahlen zufolge sind im Jahr 2017 rund 6.100 Menschen bei der Flucht ums Leben gekommen. Die Internationale Organisation für Migration kritisiert, dass diese Zahl nur ein Bruchtal der tatsächlichen Todesfälle zeigt.

Die Zahl von Migranten, die auf der Flucht ums Leben kommen, liegt deutlich höher als statistisch erfasst. So seien die 2017 registrierten 6.142 Todesfälle nur ein Bruchteil der tatsächlichen Anzahl, sagte ein Sprecher der Internationalen Organisation für Migration (IOM) am Freitag in Genf.

Die IOM führt seit 2014 eine entsprechende Statistik, in der seitdem fast 26.000 Todesfälle verzeichnet wurden. Grundlage für die Statistik sind Leichenfunde und im Fall von Ertrunkenen im Mittelmeer auch Aussagen von Zeugen.

Les gamins crient, une femme abandonne ses casseroles et s’enfuit loin de ce carrefour commerçant bondé, un homme se réfugie derrière un réfrigérateur. Le convoi de la gendarmerie qui traverse la petite ville de Kidira, bordant la frontière malienne, dans l’est du Sénégal, vient d’être attaqué. Le temps que les gendarmes abasourdis sortent de leurs véhicules arme au poing, les assaillants encagoulés sont déjà loin. A bord du pick-up blanc que le convoi escortait, cinq représentants de l’Organisation internationale pour les migrations (OIM) ont été tués.
