At a time when European Union budgets are threatened by Brexit, Italian political instability and an unfinished economic crisis, the European Commission’s proposal for triple funding for borders, migration and asylum suggests an unusual consensus in favor of border security.

The increase in funding gained considerable press attention, but the role of the European military and security industry in shaping these policies and then reaping the plentiful financial rewards remains largely underexposed.

TIRANA (Reuters) – Numbers of migrants trying to reach Western Europe via Albania have leapt this year, with people smugglers opening a new Balkan route for those fleeing conflict or poverty in the Middle East, North Africa and Asia.

Migrants gathered outside the Asylum Seekers Centre in Tirana told Reuters how they wanted to find work in a variety of European Union countries, dodging police on the way there.

The flow of migrants heading for EU member Croatia across Albania and its northern neighbor Montenegro remains modest compared with the hundreds of thousands who took a route further to the east when the European migration crisis peaked in 2015.

GENEVA (Reuters) – Forth-six Ethiopians drowned early on Wednesday and 16 were missing after a smuggler’s boat carrying at least 100 migrants capsized as it approached Yemen, the U.N. migration agency said in a statement.

The boat left the port of Bossasso in Somalia on Tuesday, with 83 men and 17 women on board who were hoping to find work in Yemen and the Arabian Gulf, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said, citing information from survivors.

IOM’s director of operations and emergencies, Mohammad Abdiker, said the Gulf of Aden’s migration tragedy was shameful.

Ganz in der Nähe der gläsernen Hochhäuser stehen kleine, selbst gezimmerte Hütten aus Holzbrettern. Abgedichtet sind sie mit alten Matratzen. Davor: Einkaufswagen gefüllt mit leeren Flaschen, kaputte Fahrräder, Metallschrott. Sanitäre Einrichtungen oder eine Wasserversorgung gibt es nicht. Auch das ist Frankfurt, die Bankenmetropole am Main. Was aussieht wie ein Stück brasilianische Favela, ist ein Hüttenlager auf einer Industriebrache unweit des Hauptbahnhofs von Frankfurt am Main.

Selon le premier ministre danois, Copenhague est en discussion avec Vienne et « d’autres pays » de l’Union pour la mise en place d’un « nouveau régime européen de l’asile ».

Leurs divisions et la pression des populistes font décidément naître les idées les plus renversantes parmi les dirigeants européens quant au traitement à réserver aux demandeurs d’asile et au refoulement de ceux qui en ont été déboutés.

Mardi 5 juin, le premier ministre danois, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, a annoncé que son pays était en discussion avec l’Autriche – qui assumera bientôt la présidence tournante de l’Union – et « d’autres pays » pour la mise en place d’un « nouveau régime européen de l’asile ». Point central du dispositif : la création de « centres communs de réception et d’expulsion en Europe », mais hors du territoire de l’UE semble-t-il. En clair, des camps de rétention, où se retrouveraient des migrants ne pouvant prétendre à une demande d’asile, ou ne pouvant être rapidement renvoyés.

Plastic huts, rubbish, exhausting days under the blistering sun, violence… The San Ferdinando camp in southern Italy couldn’t be further from the „good times“ for migrants, referred to by Italy’s new nationalist interior minister Matteo Salvini.

The citrus and kiwi season is over in the agricultural plains of Gioia Tauro, in Calabria, but several hundred African migrants continue to live at the makeshift camp, hoping for a few days of work.

Tensions are running high after Soumaila Sacko, a 29-year-old Malian, was shot in the head on Saturday while he was looking for metal sheets in a disused factory.

Artikel des Schriftstellers und Publizisten Roberto Saviano, bekannt durch seine Studie Ghomorra über die organisierte Wirtschaftskriminalität in Italien, zu dem Mord an Soumayla Sacko, einem gewerkschaftlichen Aktivisten, der sich für die Rechte migrantischer Erntearbeiter eingesetzt hat. Gesellschaft und Politik, so schreibt er, haben anders als noch vor ein paar Jahren kaum auf diesen rassistischen Anschlag reagiert und die Community allein gelassen. Dies kommt der Mafia zugute, welche die Migranten je nach Bedarf anheuert oder in Sklaverei hält.

L’attacco alle ONG che salvano vite nel Mediterraneo centrale e la imposizione di un Codice di condotta che doveva imporre regole in contrasto con le Convenzioni internazionali, hanno costituito lo snodo centrale della politica di contrasto dell’immigrazione, che adesso Minniti rivendica come un “successo” del governo Gentiloni, per la forte riduzione degli arrivi. Riduzione alla quale corrisponde un aumento delle persone internate nei centri di detenzione in Libia, che non sono certo evacuate, se non in minima parte, con le operazioni di rimpatrio “volontario” gestite dall’OIM, e con i ponti aerei organizzati dall’UNHCR verso il Niger, dove dovrebbero trovare accoglienza i soggetti più vulnerabili. Persone che non trovano poi altri paesi disposti ad accoglierli e sono quindi destinate ad un limbo di durata indefinita. Se non a ritornare in Libia per essere di nuovo vittime del traffico di esseri umani.

Mamoudou Gassama kletterte vergangene Woche mit bloßen Händen vier Etagen hoch, um einen Vierjährigen zu retten, der an einem Balkon über dem Abgrund hing. Das Video wurde millionenfach geklickt, Gassama ein Held. Der 22-Jährige traf sich mit dem französischen Präsidenten, erhielt umgehend die französische Nationalität und heuerte bei der Pariser Feuerwehr an. Eine filmreife Story über den Spiderman genannten Mann aus Mali. Mit Jubel auf der einen Seite.
