Labourers die in southern Foggia province after the van they were travelling in smashed into a truck.
At least a dozen people, including migrant labourers returning home after spending the day working in the fields, have been killed in a crash between a van and a lorry in southern Italy.
Italian news agency ANSA reported on Monday that the accident took place on a state highway in the area of Lesina in the province of Foggia.

Ma scopre presto che la realtà è molto lontana da quella che sognava. E che non gli spetta alcun diritto. Neanche al riposo, o a una paga giusta. Scopre il caldo insopportabile nelle serre di plastica, e la fatica inumana di non fermarsi mai, per nessun motivo, dalle 5 del mattino alle 4 del pomeriggio. Solo 20 minuti per mangiare. Sette giorni su sette. E scopre le ustioni sulla schiena, e che se non vieni al campo anche quando stai male ti buttano fuori, e che se in serra arriva la polizia, ti devi nascondere. E stare zitto. E non protestare. Perché, come dice il „padrone“, „questo lavoro te lo devi meritare“.

Le Polisario a présenté un recours devant la Cour de justice de l’Union européenne contre la tenue de négociations entre l’UE et le Maroc pour renouveler leur accord de pêche, a indiqué samedi à l’AFP un responsable du Polisario.
L’accord de pêche Maroc-UE, qui permet aux navires européens d’accéder à la zone de pêche marocaine en échange d’une contribution économique annuelle de 30 millions d’euros, arrive à échéance en juillet.

La storia del nostro Paese è una storia di pieni e di vuoti. Soprattutto di vuoti, vuoti che però non restano tali a lungo perché lo spazio a nostra disposizione è limitato e quindi va occupato tutto. Il vuoto costa caro, il vuoto vale oro. Col vuoto si possono fare affari da decine di milioni di euro. Il vuoto va sfruttato, difeso, presidiato. Il vuoto è una grande metafora, una metafora che spiega moltissime cose. Di certo spiega per cosa sia morto Soumayla Sacko, il 29enne maliano ucciso a San Calogero, in provincia di Vibo Valentia.

Im Zeltlager von San Ferdinando in Kalabrien gehen die Temperaturen im Winter nachts bis gegen null Grad. Bis zu 2.300 Migranten und Flüchtlinge wohnen hier. Viele von ihnen arbeiten als Tagelöhner bei der Ernte von Zitrusfrüchten und Oliven. Mit gefährlichen Gasöfen versuchen sie, sich vor der Kälte zu schützen. Immer wieder brechen Feuer aus. Ende Januar kam eine 26-jährige Nigerianerin ums Leben, als die Zelte und Baracken eines Nachts in Flammen aufgingen.

CASERTA, Italy – “Kalifoo ground is like a supermarket: Masters pass by and choose the workers,” said Osman, a 33-year-old undocumented migrant in Italy.
Most of the African migrants at the Ex Canapificio social center in Caserta, in southwestern Italy, refer to the places they gather to find work as “kalifoo ground” – slave squares– and their employers as masters.
Kalifoo, meaning “slaves,” is the Libyan word for day-workers. When migrants from Ghana arrived in this part of Italy 20 years ago, local working conditions reminded them of Libya.

very night for almost three years, Nicoleta Bolos lay awake at night on a dirty mattress in an outhouse in Sicily’s Ragusa province, waiting for the sound of footsteps outside the door. As the hours passed, she braced herself for the door to creak open, for the metallic clunk of a gun being placed on the table by her head and the weight of her employer thudding down on the dirty grey mattress beside her.
The only thing that she feared more than the sound of the farmer’s step outside her door was the threat of losing her job. So she endured night after night of rape and beatings while her husband drank himself into a stupor outside.
“The first time, it was my husband who said I had to do this. That the owner of the greenhouse where we had been given work wanted to sleep with me and if we refused he wouldn’t pay us and would send us off his land,” she says.
