Leben im „Dschungel“ Mehr als 150 Menschen verstecken sich im „Dschungel“ – einem dicht bewachsenen Gebiet neben den Gleisen einer Bahnstrecke, die die serbische Grenzstadt Šid mit Kroatien verbindet. Die meisten Bewohner haben schon mehrere Versuche hinter sich, Mitteleuropa zu erreichen: mit Hilfe von Schmugglern, alleine oder in Gruppen, als blinde Passagiere auf Lastwagen oder Güterzügen.

For the past four years, Dutch photographer Joël van Houdt has been documenting the journeys of Afghan refugees around the world. In Afghanistan, there is a dearth of information about the reality of the refugee experience. Van Houdt moved to Kabul in 2010 and witnessed the soaring optimism created by the US surge in which money and human resources were pumped into the beleaguered state. By the time he left in 2015, the optimism had turned to utter hopelessness. The question his Afghan friends most routinely asked him was how to leave the country.
These photographs are from an exhibition simultaneously displayed in the offices of the Guardian in London and on blast walls in the centre of Kabul.

Auf den «Sommer der Migration» 2015 folgten schnell staatliche Repression, rassistische Hetze und die schrittweise Schließung der Balkanroute. Eine Serie von Verschärfungen des Asylrechts und der EU-Türkei-Deal folgten. Zigtausenden wurde der Weg zu ihrem Ziel abgeschnitten und endete (vorläufig) in Zeltlagern, Abschiebezentren, in der Illegalität, in selbstorganisierten Strukturen, in den Warteschleifen auf Asyl, Familienzusammenführung und Relocation.
Das Fotobuch «No Direction Home» mit Arbeiten von 30 griechischen Fotografen dokumentiert die jüngste Flucht- und Migrations-Geschichte über die südöstliche Migrationsroute, die mehr als eine halbe Million Menschen nach und durch Griechenland geführt hat: Von den Kriegsgebieten in Syrien über die griechischen Inseln nach Piräus, durch die Squats und Camps in Attika und den Norden nach Idomeni und weiter auf der sogenannten Balkanroute. Die Migrationsgeschichten in Bildern zeigen die Grausamkeit des europäischen Migrationsregimes und das Leid der Flucht auf «illegalen» Routen ebenso wie die Stärke der Menschen, die diesen Weg trotz aller Abwehrmaßnahmen gegangen sind und bis heute gehen.

After being on the road with his wife and six children for more than a year since they left eastern Syria, Ali was living in the Subotica transit camp in northern Serbia. They had managed to cross the mountains and the sea, but they had got stuck in Serbia because of the closure of the route north.
Ali and his family had applied for asylum in Hungary and after waiting for six months, they were finally selected to cross the border.

About 100,000 people have arrived on Italian shores this year, after making the perilous journey across the Mediterranean from Libya.
They are joining many thousands more asylum seekers and migrants already in the country – many stuck there after other European countries closed their borders.
About 450 of them can be found in the Fenoglio camp, outside Turin, which is run by the Italian Red Cross.
It is supposed to be a transit camp, from where migrants are quickly transferred to reception centres – but the logjam in the system means many end up spending months here.

CALAIS, France – They live in quiet corners of Calais and forests on the edge of town. They must stay out of sight of the police who are on the hunt for refugees returning to the port city.
Local organizations estimate between 500 and 600 people are back in Calais since the demolition of the “Jungle” migrant camp and dispersal of some 10,000 people last October. They include former Jungle residents and new arrivals. Around 200 of them are children traveling alone.
Many hope to find a way across the English Channel to fulfill different dreams: joining relatives, making use of their English skills to build a better life, seeking asylum in the U.K. amid frustration with the slow process in France. […]
