Thousands of refugees are continuing to board boats to Europe everyday despite the worsening winter weather

At Emre’s boat shop in central Izmir, one of Turkey’s main ports, you can’t turn around without bumping into a pile of inflatable rubber boats. On this day there are 16 stacked in beige boxes, all numbered with the same inscrutable code, SK-800PLY, and all newly delivered from China. If Emre’s maths is right, all of them will be discarded on a Greek beach within a couple of days. For Emre’s shop is where you can buy boats that take refugees to Europe – and where they are still being sold at a rate of nearly a dozen a day.

“In the summer we were selling more,” Emre tells a potential Syrian customer. “But right now we’re still selling six of the cheaper boats every day, and five of the more expensive ones. How many do you want?”

On Greek island’s north coast, activists have launched their own humanitarian operation. But the welcome is less warm at the registration centres in the south

In the hills high above the north coast of Lesbos, an incongruous mass of orange surges for hundreds of metres across a craggy plateau. It could be the crater of a seething volcano. But this is not lava.

On Tuesday, the number of asylum seekers to reach Europe this year passed 1 million. Nearly half of them did so via the beaches of this Greek island – and the eerie hilltop is where the residents of Lesbos have piled hundreds of thousands of their discarded orange lifejackets. Elsewhere, the islanders are building a second graveyard to house the bodies of the drowned. This silent swath of orange – 3.7 metres (1 ft) tall in places, and rolling like the sea – is just as apt a tombstone for the scale and tragedy of the European refugee crisis.

Ein türkischer Schlepper gibt freimütig zu, aus der Türkei käme nicht einmal eine Fliege nach Griechenland, wenn die türkische Regierung es nicht wollen würde.

Sie nennen ihn Osman. Oder so wurde er uns zumindest vorgestellt. Er ist einer der Top-Leute der türkischen Mafia, der sich mit Immigranten und Flüchtlingen im Nachbarland befasst (sprich auch ihre Überfahrt nach Griechenland organisiert). Und er versteckt sich nicht …

Vor der türkischen Küste sind am Dienstag elf Flüchtlinge ertrunken. Unter den Opfern seien drei Kinder, meldete die amtliche Nachrichtenagentur Anadolu. Sieben weitere Flüchtlinge hätten von der türkischen Küstenwache gerettet werden können, als das in Kusadasi im Südwesten der Türkei gestartete Boot auf dem Weg zur griechischen Insel Samos gekentert sei.

Nach Angaben der Internationalen Organisation für Migration (IOM) sind in diesem Jahr mehr als eine Million Flüchtlinge in Europa angekommen. Die Zahl der Flüchtlinge, die bei der Überfahrt über das Mittelmeer ums Leben kamen oder als vermisst gelten, gab die IOM mit rund 3700 an.

Der Zuzug von Geflüchteten hat sich im Dezember mehr als halbiert. Unterdessen ist jeder zehnte Deutsche in der Flüchtlingshilfe aktiv.

BERLIN/HANNOVER epd/rtr | Die Zahl der eingereisten Migranten hat sich im Dezember im Vergleich zum Vormonat mehr als halbiert. Wie aus einer Statistik der Bundespolizei hervorgeht, wurden bis Sonntag (20. Dezember) bei Kontrollen 73.500 Migranten gezählt. Im Vormonat waren es im selben Zeitraum schon rund 170.000 gewesen.

Die Zahlen im Dezember variieren zwischen 2.000 und 5.000 Einreisen pro Tag. Am Sonntag wurden knapp 3.500 Migranten gezählt, davon 3.066 in Bayern. Anders als noch im Vormonat führt die Bundespolizei seit Anfang Dezember Flüchtlinge, die dabei sind, in ein anderes Land auszureisen, gesondert auf.

Greece – IOM confirmed yesterday (21/12) that over a million irregular migrants and refugees arrived in Europe in 2015, mostly from Syria, Africa and South Asia.

Through the weekend, IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix – Flow Monitoring System counted 999,745 irregular arrivals across the Mediterranean, including migrants journeying by both land and sea to Greece, as well as to Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Malta and Cyprus.

Drei Milliarden hatte die EU der Türkei zugesagt. Das werde nicht reichen, meint der Flüchtlingskommissar der UN. Ohne ein weitreichendes Investitionsprogramm kämen immer mehr Schutzsuchende nach Europa.

„Wir brauchen einen ‚New Deal‘ der Staatengemeinschaft – insbesondere der Europäer – mit Syriens Nachbarstaaten“, forderte UN-Flüchtlingshochkommissar António Guterres vor dem Sicherheitsrat in New York. Damit bezog er sich auf das massive Investitionsprogramm, mit denen die USA in den 30er Jahren der Wirtschaftskrise in ihrem Land begegnet waren.

Idomeni, Greece – As the sun gradually dimmed into night, 20-year-old Hamza Chimawi hung off the side of a train car with one arm and swung himself down to the platform at the Idomeni crossing on the border of Greece and Macedonia.

Like thousands of other mostly young Moroccans, Hamza left his home town and took off for Europe. Lighting his cigarette and then another for his friend Mohamed, who is a year younger than him, he said that they risked their lives on boats and land to make it to any country in Europe.

Vor zehn Jahren hat die europäische Grenzschutzagentur FRONTEX ihre Arbeit aufgenommen und den Auftrag der EU erhalten, u.a. den Grenzschutz der Mitgliedstaaten zu koordinieren und Risiko-Analysen zu erstellen. Bereits damals wurde befürchtet, dass dies die Entwicklung der EU hin zu einem Superstaat mit eigener Polizei bedeuten könnte. 2015 könnte nun als das Jahr in die Geschichte eingehen, in dem die EU die Grundsteine für eine EU-Polizei gelegt hat – zunächst natürlich im Bereich des Grenzschutzes zu Lasten von Geflüchteten und Migrant_innen.
