Dänemark verlässt das UN-Flüchtlingshilfswerk UNHCR. Nicht einmal 500 Flüchtlinge will es noch jährlich aufnehmen.

STOCKHOLM taz | Wer die Internetseite des dänischen Ausländer- und Integrationsministeriums aufruft, wird von einer laufenden Zählmaschine begrüßt. Derzeit läuft sie bis zur Ziffer 67: Stolz präsentiert Ministerin Inger Støjberg damit, dass die Regierung nun bereits 67 Verschärfungen des Ausländer- und Asylrechts veranlasst hat. Eine der letzten hat es besonders in sich: Dänemark hat sich jetzt aus dem Quotensystem der UN-Flüchtlingsorganisation UNHCR ausgeklinkt, mit dem zuletzt mehr als 30 Staaten weltweit Flüchtlinge aufnahmen. Amnesty International wirft Kopenhagen ein „historisches Versagen“ vor.

At a small Senegalese restaurant hidden away in the depths of Tangier’s Old Town, a 28-year-old Sierra Leonean man with impeccable English tells The Independent about his “dream” of making the short sea crossing from Morocco to Spain.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a Moroccan man lurches into Amy’s Restaurant and lunges across the tables, swinging a firm blow at this reporter’s side, shouting as he does so: “Sympathisant de nègre”. The phrase needs little translation.

In Europa hat die Zahl der Asylanträge um die Hälfte abgenommen. Auch in Deutschland melden sich immer weniger Flüchtlinge. Es bleibt aber weiterhin das wichtigste Zielland.

Die Zahl der Asylbewerber ist in der EU um die Hälfte gesunken. Von Januar bis September wurden 479.650 erstmalige Anträge registriert. Das sind 50 Prozent weniger als im Vergleichszeitraum 2016, wie die Zeitungen der Funke-Mediengruppe unter Berufung auf neue Zahlen der EU-Statistikbehörde Eurostat berichten. Im gesamten Jahr 2016 hatten in der EU demnach noch 1,2 Millionen Flüchtlinge Asyl beantragt, 2015 waren es etwa 1,25 Millionen.

Berlin zahlt 230 Millionen Euro, damit Flüchtlinge im Libanon, in Jordanien oder in der Türkei bleiben – und sich nicht auf nach Europa machen. Sie beseitigen Abfall oder säubern Straßen.

In den Ländern rund um Syrien hat die Bundesregierung in diesem Jahr fast 20.000 weitere Jobmöglichkeiten für Flüchtlinge geschaffen. Damit steigt die Zahl der Arbeitsplätze, die Deutschland in der Krisenregion finanziert, auf insgesamt rund 80.000. Mit den Maßnahmen zur Beschäftigung vor Ort will Bundesentwicklungsminister Gerd Müller (CSU) Flüchtlingen die Möglichkeit geben, wieder ein weitgehend normales Leben zu führen.

La police espagnole a annoncé, hier vendredi, l’ouverture d’une enquête sur la mort d’un Algérien dans une prison où des centaines de migrants arrivés par la mer avaient été provisoirement placés fin novembre contre l’avis des ONG locales.

THESSALONIKI, Greece — Greek police say they have found the body of a man, believed to be a migrant, in a river that flows along the country’s northeastern border with Turkey and which is on an illegal migration route.

The unidentified body was found late Thursday in the icy Evros River. Police announced the discovery Friday.

The United Nations says many Syrian refugees in Lebanon are more vulnerable than ever.

Many refugees depend on aid to survive, while a growing number are falling deeper into poverty, and most are in debt.

The number of Syrian refugees in Lebanon has been in decline, but there are no exact numbers of those going back to Syria.

The UN believes that conditions for a safe return are not yet in place.

A group of undocumented Ethiopian workers have said they were subject to serious abuses by Saudi police before they were expelled, including physical and psychological torture and being forcibly held in „dirty“ prison camps.

Six Ethiopians told The Associated Press news agency that after being captured by Saudi police officers, some of them were beaten, robbed of their possessions and saw their compatriots shot at and wounded when they tried to escape roundups.

„The prison cell I was put into was so dirty that some of us were severely sick. It was like a toilet,“ said Sadiq Ahmed, a former teacher who went to Saudi Arabia five years ago and was detained for 11 days before his deportation.

SABRATHA, Libya — For nearly two years, this ancient, beachfront city, famed for its Roman ruins, was one of North Africa’s largest smuggling hubs, a gateway for tens of thousands of migrants seeking better futures in Europe. Now, there are none on the beaches where hundreds of rickety boats once ferried them to Italy illegally, none in the migrant detention center where they ended up when an attempt failed.

At the five-star West Tallil Holiday resort, the white, two-story villas once housed as many as 3,000 migrants at a time waiting to set sail. Their traffickers, who had seized the hotel, had erected sand dunes along the beach to hide them from Libyan coast guard patrols and curious swimmers.

The resort is now empty, as are the smugglers’ other safe houses.

ROME (Reuters) – Italy aims to deploy up to 470 troops to Niger to help tackle people-smuggling, the military General Staff said on Thursday.

Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said on Sunday some of the 1,400 Italian troops now stationed in Iraq could be transferred to the Sahel region in West Africa – which includes Niger – after victories against Islamist militants in Iraq.

Gentiloni said the redeployed troops could also help to combat terrorism in the Sahel.
