Refugee support agencies are reporting a surge in homelessness in northern Greece.
The surge is being attributed to the big rise in refugees avoiding the Greek islands and using the land border from Turkey across the Evros river into Greece instead.
The main city in northern Greece, Thessaloniki, has apparently run out of room completely to house new arrivals.

MADRID — Spanish officials say more than 300 people including newborns have been rescued from a wooden boat off Libya’s coast and taken to an Italian port.
The Defense Ministry said water was flooding the boat when rescuers reached it Saturday northeast of the Libyan town of Misrata.

Die EU und der Staat Israel überlegen derzeit, wie sie mit Migranten aus Afrika verfahren, die keinen Anspruch auf Flüchtlingsschutz haben und dennoch nicht in ihre Heimatländer zurückgeschickt werden können. Denn in vielen Fällen ist das rechtlich wie praktisch schwierig. Viele kamen ohne Pass, etliche haben ihn unterwegs oder nach ihrer Ankunft vernichtet. Mit der Ausstellung von Ersatzdokumenten lassen sich ihre Heimatländer oft lange Zeit.
Die Europäische Union und auch der Staat Israel, der einige Zehntausend afrikanische Migranten beherbergt, suchen darum Mittel und Wege, um diese Schwierigkeiten zu umgehen. Doch die meisten Überlegungen sind kaum praktikabel, oft sogar haarsträubend und unmenschlich.

Die europäische Organisation SOS Mediterranée hat am Wochenende im Mittelmeer 98 Bootsflüchtlinge vor dem Ertrinken gerettet.
Viele Menschen seien allerdings in verheerendem Zustand gewesen, hieß es. Sieben Flüchtlinge hätten wiederbelebt werden müssen, unter ihnen zwei Babys, die bereits unter der Wasseroberfläche getrieben seien. Die Organisation sprach von einem der dramatischsten Einsätze seit zwei Jahren. Die Flüchtlinge hätten keine Rettungswesten getragen, als ihr Schlauchboot kenterte. Mehrere Insassen würden vermisst.
Schon seit ein paar Tagen protestieren 42 tunesische Migranten auf Lampedusa. Sie fordern, dass sie verlegt und nicht repatriiert werden. Viele haben seit drei Tagen nichts mehr gegessen, einige haben sich den Mund zugenäht.

Sono 42 i migranti che stanno continuando la protesta che va avanti da diversi giorni davanti alla chiesa madre di Lampedusa. Molti di loro non mangiano da tre giorni e in diversi, si sono cuciti la bocca con ago e filo di cotone bianco. Chiedono di potere essere trasferiti dalla più grande isola delle Pelagie e di non essere rimpatriati. Le forze dell’ordine seguono i migranti senza intervenire rimanendo nelle vicinanze, in assetto antisommossa.

At least 30 refugees and migrants have drowned off the coast of Aden, Yemen, after their boat capsized, the United Nations has reported.
The UN’s migration and refugee agencies said on Friday that the boat, overcrowded with at least 152 Somalis and Ethiopians, had departed from the Al Buraiqa coast in Aden on January 23.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and UNHCR said the vessel was believed to have been operated by „unscrupulous smugglers“ who were trying to bring refugees and migrants to Djibouti „while trying to extort more money from them“.
Die italienische Regierung hatte angekündigt, dass sie italienisches Militär zur Aufstands- und Migrationsbekämpfung in den Niger und ein zusätzliches Kontingent nach Libyen schicken wird. Nun kommen die Absagen von der nigrischen und der Tripolis-Regierung – beide Länder waren nicht von dem italienischen Vorhaben konsultiert worden.

L’Italie avait annoncé, fin 2017, son intention d’envoyer des militaires au Niger afin de lutter contre l’insécurité. Paolo Gentiloni, le Premier ministre italien, avait précisé que cette décision faisait suite à une demande venue du gouvernement nigérien. Un premier contingent de 120 hommes devait partir pour le Niger en ce début d’année. Mais le gouvernement nigérien nie avoir été consulté à ce sujet.
Si l’on en croit des sources officielles, la nouvelle de l’envoi de 470 soldats italiens au Niger, le gouvernement nigérien l’a apprise par une dépêche de l’AFP. « Nous n’avons pas été consultés ni informés. Nous étions surpris », confie une source gouvernementale au Niger à RFI.

Un fischio, poi il rumore dei freni: da uno degli ultimi treni in arrivo da Oulx scende Mohammed Traoré, 17 anni, guineano. Si guarda intorno, non c’è molta gente sulla banchina, i lampioni spargono un velo di luce nell’aria densa di umidità, il freddo entra nella giacca grigia che il ragazzo ha dimenticato di abbottonare.
Il grande cartello blu con la scritta bianca indica il nome della stazione: Bardonecchia. La cittadina piemontese a 1.312 metri d’altitudine gli è stata indicata da alcuni amici in una chat su Whatsapp. Da qui parte la rotta alpina, un sentiero che arriva in Francia dopo sei ore di cammino attraverso il valico del colle della Scala. Traoré annuisce: è arrivato.

Four-year-old Samuel Kabamba died a year ago trying to reach Europe with his mother
Among the immaculately tended, flower-bedecked graves of Barbate cemetery, one tomb stands out. Its occupant was not from the Andalusian town – he was not even Spanish – and his gravestone is decorated not with an image of Christ or the Virgin Mary but a picture of waves breaking on a sandy beach and a photograph of a little boy wrapped up in a scarf and coat.
“God has given and God has taken away,” reads the epitaph in French. “Blessed be God.”
Here, surrounded by the dead of a country he never knew, lies Samuel Kabamba, a four-year-old from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who died trying to reach Europe with his mother, Véronique Nzazi.
