Migrant crisis: Turkish guards hit migrant boat with sticks

The BBC has been given a video showing Turkish coastguard using sticks against a boat full of migrants as they sail to Greece in the Aegean Sea.

The incident is said to have happened in Turkish waters as the migrants were on their way to the island of Lesbos.

The migrants accused the coastguard of attacking them, but the coastguard say they were trying to stop the boat without harming the occupants.

The EU and Turkey are discussing new moves to curb the flow of refugees.

Europe is facing its biggest refugee crisis since World War Two. Last year, more than a million people entered the EU illegally by boat, mainly going from Turkey to Greece.

More than 132,000 migrants have arrived by boat into Greece so far this year – a large increase on the same period last year.

The vast majority of coastguard patrols in the Aegean are professional, with Turkish and Greek personnel either towing migrant vessels back ashore or rescuing those that capsize. But there have been reports of attacks.

Masked officials on the Greek side were filmed last year appearing to puncture inflatable dinghies with migrants on board – and now this, with the Turkish coastguard claiming they were merely trying to stop the engine and stop the boat advancing.

It could be that these are individual coastguard officers acting on their own and not following orders, perhaps fuelled by machismo and even xenophobia. But it’s also possible that this is more than an isolated case, showing the Turkish authorities going to any length to stem the migration flow under renewed pressure from Brussels.

Either way, it will worry EU leaders meeting later this week to finalise a plan with Turkey to reduce migrant numbers. Could these scenes be repeated as Turkey steps up patrols of Europe’s borders?

Disquiet over deal with Turkey

The incident captured on the video is thought to have occurred in Turkish waters opposite the island early on Saturday.

The 30-second clip shows people wearing life jackets on a rubber dinghy being hit with poles by men standing on another vessel. The people on the boat shout out in Farsi and Arabic.

The boat of migrants eventually moved away and made it to Lesbos.

A Turkish coast guard official later confirmed the incident, but said the officers had been trying to stop the engine „without harming the refugees“.

He said the standard procedure was to tie migrant vessels to a coast guard boat and bring it back to Turkey, „but this boat of refugees didn’t stop the engine and continued on to Greece,“ he added.

Our correspondent says he has heard of similar incidents involving other migrants.

Migranti, la Guardia Costiera turca colpisce i profughi sul barcone: il video finisce in rete

Su Twitter è stato pubblicato un video choc che mostra la guardia costiera turca mentre colpisce con dei bastoni un gruppo di migranti a bordo di un barcone diretto in Grecia, attraverso il Mar Egeo. Il filmato è stato diffuso dal corrispondente della Bbc, Mark Lowen. L’episodio sarebbe avvenuto in acque turche di fronte all’isola greca di Lesbo.

Nel filmato di circa 30 secondi si vedono delle persone che indossano giubbotti di salvataggio su un gommone mentre vengono colpiti con dei bastoni da alcuni uomini in piedi su un’altra nave. L’audio riporta anche delle grida in arabo e farsi. Un funzionario della guardia costiera turca in seguito ha confermato quanto accaduto, ma ha detto che gli agenti stavano cercando di spegnere il motore „senza fare del male ai profughi a bordo“. „La procedura standard è quella di legare le barche dei migranti a una nave della guardia costiera per riportarli in Turchia, ma questo gommone non ha fermato il motore e ha continuato per la Grecia“, ha aggiunto. Il corrispondente della Bbc ha però riferito che altri testimoni hanno raccontato di episodi simili.

E‘ al collasso la situazione nella tendopoli di Idomeni, al confine greco-macedone, per questo Atene prevede di ridurre il numero dei migranti entro una settimana. Lo ha annunciato il vice ministro della Difesa greco Dimitris Vitsas, spiegando che ai circa 12.000 rifugiati rimasti bloccati dopo la chiusura della rotta dei Balcani il governo di Atene ha iniziato a distribuire dei volantini in arabo, farsi e pashtu, per invitarli a trovare rifugio in altri centri.

Le condizioni del campo, inizialmente istituito per ospitare non più di 2.000 persone, è peggiorata nelle ultime settimane con un aumento spropositato del numero di migranti che dopo la chiusura del valico di frontiera non si rassegnano e restano accampati in condizioni disperate, dove il freddo, il fango e le malattie potrebbero portare a una catastrofe umanitaria.

„Entro la fine della prossima settimana ci saranno abbastanza centri di accoglienza in tutta la Grecia per accogliere 50.000 migranti“, ha aggiunto il vice ministro della Difesa, spiegando che comunque „molti dei migranti di Idomeni attendono l’esito del vertice di giovedì dei leader dell’Ue sulla crisi dei rifugiati prima di decidere se partire. Tra loro resta la speranza che i confini che sono stati chiusi dai paesi dei Balcani come Macedonia si apriranno ancora una volta“.

„Spero che la situazione di Idomeni sia risolta entro una settimana senza ricorrere alla forza“, ha detto Vitsas. A fare da contraltare alle sue parole la drammatica fotografia, pubblicata da alcuni media, che ritrae un bambino appena nato mentre viene lavato con una bottiglia d’acqua fuori da una delle tende del campo di Idomeni.
