Unter ihnen sind 100 Frauen und Kinder. – Wie die spanische Nachrichtenagentur EFE berichtet (s.u.), haben italienische Behörden die griechische Küstenwache in den heutigen frühen Morgenstunden davon unterrichtet, dass 400 Bootsflüchtlinge vor der griechischen Insel Citera bei Kreta in Seenot geraten sind und SOS-Rufe ausgelöst haben. Inzwischen heisst es, dass Rettungsoperationen anlaufen. Das Flüchtlingsboot droht zu sinken.

The EP’s Directorate-General for External Policies just released an Analysis, “Mediterranean flows into Europe: Migration and the EU’s foreign policy,” in which it reviews the EU’s external policies and instruments relating to migration in the Mediterranean, including the Mediterranean Task Force established after 3 October 2013 tragedy at Lampedusa in which over 350 people died.The Analysis describes the serious shortcomings of the security-driven approach that has been taken by the EU.

In Italien sorgt ein Video für Empörung. Darauf ist zu sehen, wie eine Fregatte der Marine auf ein Boot mit 176 Flüchtlingen feuert. Das Militär verteidigt sich mit einer merkwürdigen Begründung.
Rom – Es ist der 9. November 2013. Der Himmel über dem Kanal von Sizilien ist wolkenverhangen, auf der Fregatte „Aliseo“ der italienischen Kriegsmarine hält ein Mann ein Mobiltelefon in der Hand und filmt ein Flüchtlingsboot mit 176 Menschen darauf. Das Boot scheint auf der Flucht zu sein, es versucht Abstand zu gewinnen von dem mit Raketen und Torpedos bewaffneten Kriegsschiff in etwa 40 Meter Entfernung.
The main news (expressed with more or less alarmist and racist undertones) are:
- around 12.200 migrants have been “rescued” so far by Mare Nostrum (some articles speak of 13.500, not sure what is the difference). Only from the beginning of the year there have been around 8.500 arrivals (2.000 in the past few days), ten times more than last year;
- the costs of the operations (so this article says) have not been officially confirmed, but it is believed that Mare Nostrum costs around 9 millions € a month, whereas the previous operations of the Coast Guard and the Guadia di Finanza costed 1,5 millions €. The commander of the Italian Navy, Luigi Binelli Mantelli, said that the special funding that had been allocated to the operation has now finished and the operations is being conducted with the „normal“ budged by the Italian Navy. It is not clear what will happen for the summer.

Binnen 24 Stunden waren mehrere Schiffe im Einsatz, um die aus Nordafrika kommenden Flüchtlinge zu bergen, wie die Marine mitteilte. Zwischen Montag und Mittwoch waren bereits mehr als 2000 Einwanderer aus überfüllten Booten gerettet worden.
Unter ihnen sind zahlreiche Frauen und Minderjährige.

PORTO EMPEDOCLE – Almeno 250 dei circa 500 migranti giunti ieri a Porto Empedocle (Agrigento) fono fuggiti dall’immobile all’interno dell’area portuale dove erano stati alloggiati. Polizia e carabinieri stanno cercando di rintracciarli. “La citta’ e’ piombata in emergenza -ha detto il sindaco, Lillo Firetto- e non e’ in grado di accogliere numeri cosi’ importanti di immigrati extracomunitari, alla luce anche della chiusura definitiva della tensostruttura per la prima accoglienza. Gli immigrati lasciati sulla banchina del porto -ha continuato il sindaco- stanno di fatto girovagando per la citta’ senza poter ricevere alcun sostegno ne’ un’adeguata prima assistenza. Faccio appello al ministro Alfano affinche’ immediatamente si intervenga con misure straordinarie per poter garantire una decorosa accoglienza degli immigrati sollevando la citta’ da questa gravissima emergenza”. Colonne di migranti sono stati avvistati anche lungo il viadotto Morandi che collega Porto Empedocle con Agrigento. Tra loro molte donne e diversi minori.

È bastato notare le vele da lontano per capire che sottocoperta erano nascosti 48 immigrati. Ieri gli uomini del reparto operativo aeronavale della Guardia di finanza hanno intercettato in acque internazionali, a sud di Capo Spartivento, in Calabria, un bialbero lungo 13 metri, guidato da tre russi che trasportava quarantuno uomini, tre donne e quattro bambini, di nazionalità afghana, pachistana e siriana.

Sicilia – ”I migranti che in queste ore stanno sbarcando sulle coste siciliane, compresa Lampedusa, potrebbero essere oltre 4.000.
Le imbarcazioni provengono dalla Libia ed e’ la prima volta che si assiste a un’ondata di arrivi cosi consistente e concentrata in poche ore”, e’ quanto afferma Jose’ Angel Oropeza, direttore dell’Ufficio di Coordinamento per il Mediterraneo dell’Organizzazione Internazionale per le Migrazioni (OIM), a commento dell’alto numero di arrivi via mare che sta interessando da ieri la Sicilia.
