Hungary’s government submitted a so-called „Stop Soros“ legislation package to parliament late Tuesday (13 February), which would grant the interior minister powers to ban civil groups deemed to support migration.
The bill is part of prime minister Viktor Orban’s anti-immigration drive that has recently targeted Hungarian-born US financier and philanthropist George Soros, who has been promoting liberal values through his foundation, Open Society.
Rights groups say the draft is the latest effort by the nationalist government to undermine civil society, democratic values and curb critical voices ahead of elections on 8 April, where Orban’s ruling Fidesz party is expected to win a third consecutive term.

BERLIN taz | Die Zahl der ausreisepflichtigen Personen in Deutschland liegt weit niedriger als vor einem Jahr prognostiziert. Zum Jahresende 2017 waren im Ausländerzentralregister (AZK) 228.859 Personen als „ausreisepflichtig“ vermerkt. Das geht aus einer Antwort der Bundesregierung auf eine Kleine Anfrage der Linkspartei hervor, die der taz vorliegt.
Vor einem Jahr hatte die Beraterfirma McKinsey im Auftrag der Bundesregierung noch errechnet, dass die Zahl der Ausreisepflichtigen bis Ende 2017 auf „mindestens 485.000“ ansteigen würde – und empfahl der Bundesregierung 14 Maßnahmen für eine „konsequentere Rückführung“.

En 2017, la inmigración ilegal en España creció un 101,4% mientras que las entradas por Grecia bajaron un 77%. Para el Gobierno, la cooperación y ayuda para el desarrollo de los países de origen es la clave para dar una solución a este fenómeno siempre vinculado a la tragedia. De hecho, el ministro del Interior, Juan Ignacio Zoido, viaja hoy mismo a Senegal y Mauritania y este aspecto forma parte central de su agenda. Pero España también está planteando en Europa que, al igual que se está haciendo con Turquía para contener los flujos de refugiados sirios, se ayude a Marruecos para que pueda gestionar la inmigración que, como resultado del control que ejerce sobre sus fronteras, ya se está quedando dentro de territorio alauí y convirtiéndoles en un país, no ya de tránsito, sino de destino. Con la multiplicación de cargas que ello supone.

Ahmed Souissi describes himself as a civil society activist. In a country where almost every job is unionised, Souissi is the leader of the Union of Unemployed Graduates on the island of Kerkennah: the departure point for Tunisians heading – legally and illegally – to Europe.
Souissi is now employed, but his union work continues. He has seen the illegal migration business take root and flourish on his island. He describes the old fishing boats – packed with desperate, predominantly young men from across the country – making their way out of the harbour in full view of the police and national guard, groups ostensibly charged with halting them.

AGADEZ, Niger—For centuries, the city of Agadez served as a gateway between sub-Saharan and North Africa. While the camel caravans have been replaced by trucks and Toyota 4x4s, the city’s local communities still rely on the transport of merchandise and contraband to get by. Agadez is also the largest city in Niger’s restive north, the birthplace of ethnic-Tuareg rebellions against the Nigerien state, and a place where jihadist gunmen use the lawless, open desert to move between hotspots in this part of Africa.

Réunis en sommet mardi dans la capitale nigérienne Niamey, les chefs d’Etat du G5 Sahel (Mauritanie, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger et Tchad) ont réitéré leur demande à la communauté internationale d’un soutien financier supplémentaire pour leur force militaire conjointe, rapporte l’AFP, citant un communiqué du G5.
«Compte tenu de la pression qu’exerce la crise sécuritaire actuelle dans le Sahel sur les finances publiques des Etats membres, les chefs d’Etat invitent les institutions financières internationales (…) à mettre en place des ressources additionnelles pour y faire face», affirme le communiqué final du sommet publié mardi soir.

Nach Viktor Orbáns Besuch in Wien stellt sich die Frage, was Österreich noch von den Visegrád-Staaten (Polen, Ungarn, Slowakei, Tschechien) trennt. Nicht viel, sollte man meinen. Doch so einfach ist die Sache wiederum auch nicht. Wenn Österreich auf Orbáns Linie geht, bedeutet das nicht, dass man jene der EU verlässt. Österreich schert nicht aus, sondern läuft nur voran. Der Schulterschluss ist zwar vollzogen, doch das heißt nicht, dass man mit Macron oder Merkel, Tusk oder Juncker nicht könnte. Hier kann man mit allen, mit den Problembären in Budapest wie den Bussibären in Brüssel. Und dieser Spagat ist nicht so realitätsfern, wie er auf den ersten Blick erscheint. Vor allem in puncto Flüchtlingsabwehr sind sich die beiden Auffassungen schon recht nahe gekommen. Die Alpenrepublik spielt ihr doppeltes Spiel mit Bravour.

This post is based on fieldwork I conducted in Serbia between July-August 2017. I conducted thirty semi-structured interviews and five weeks of participant observation with male Afghan refugees in order to understand how they are coping with their limited mobility due to closed borders along the Balkan route and restrictive asylum procedures. Despite the precarious state of limbo that these men are living in while they attempt clandestine border crossings, many of them claimed that life in Serbia was better than in Afghanistan. The men I met invariably used the term ‘refugees’ to describe themselves, despite not having been granted this status. To respect their self-identification, I will use this word to refer to them in this post. The accompanying photographs were taken by photographer Jenny Brover and are used with her permission. All names in this piece have been changed to respect the privacy of those I interviewed.

ROTHLEIN, Germany – It has been nearly a year since the al-Habab family from Damascus was resettled in rural Germany and, after years on the run, life is starting to look up.
Each morning, Sara, 12, and Sidra, 11, rise at 6 a.m. to catch the bus to school. Their father Abdul Rahman, 40, a former X-ray technician, goes to a nearby city for his German class. Their mother, 30-year-old Henan, stays in the cramped, two-bedroom apartment caring for their siblings, 3-year-old Hassan and 6-month-old Jenna.
