Der stellvertretende CSU-Chef Weber fordert ein härteres Vorgehen gegen Schlepperbanden im Mittelmeer. Denkbar sei der Einsatz von Nato-Schiffen.

Der stellvertretende CSU-Chef Manfred Weber fordert, die Europäische Union müsse viel entschlossener gegen Schleuser vor der libyschen Küste vorgehen. „Das unmenschliche Geschäft der Schlepper-Mafia muss notfalls mit Waffengewalt bekämpft werden, auch um die Flüchtlinge zu schützen“, sagte der Vorsitzende der christdemokratischen EVP-Fraktion im EU-Parlament der Bild-Zeitung.

Es dürfe an der Außengrenze der EU keine rechtsfreien Räume geben. Denkbar sei, Nato-Schiffe im Mittelmeer vor Libyen patrouillieren zu lassen, sagte Weber. „Das allein würde schon viele Schleuser abschrecken.“ Zudem müsse das Personal der EU-Grenzschutzagentur Frontex aufgestockt werden – auf bis zu 10.000 Personen. Die EU-Staaten seien im Kampf gegen Schlepper bisher halbherzig zu Werke gegangen.

Tamer El Said’s In the Last Days of the City documents life in the Egyptian capital over 10 years, but authorities have refused him a permit to show it

Ask a Cairo resident to describe the most frustrating thing about living in the Egyptian capital, and they will likely tell you about the noise, the chaotic streets and the proselytising taxi drivers.

However for director Tamer El Said, it is precisely these everyday gripes that form a central part of his new film In The Last Days of the City – a proud requiem to the bustling metropolis that also reflects on how the 2011 revolution has changed Cairo’s urban fabric.

Set in the lead up to the Arab Spring and filmed in the busy downtown area, In the Last Days of the City tells the story of a director, Khalid, as he struggles to capture the city that he loves on film, distracted by the pressing need to find himself a new place to live.
