Tripoli government will ’not accept‘ EU bombing of trafficking site

The Libyan Salvation Government’s foreign minister Muhammed El-ghirani said that cooperation would be needed to stop trafficking from Libya’s coast and that Tripoli would not accept bombing of sites presumed to be connected to traffickers.

14 migrants killed by train while walking on tracks in Macedonia – police

Victims believed to be in their 20s and from Somalia and Afghanistan were struck by express train north of Veles, police said

Fourteen migrants believed to be from Afghanistan and Somalia have been hit by a train and killed while walking along railway tracks in Macedonia, police said on Friday.

The migrants, who were part of a group of between 30 and 40 people, were struck by a passenger train north of Veles, in central Macedonia, at around 8.30pm on Thursday. The express service had been travelling from Thessaloniki, in northern Greece, to the Serbian capital, Belgrade.

EU borders chief says saving migrants‘ lives ’shouldn’t be priority‘ for patrols

Coastal fleet missions off Italy not mandated or resourced for full search and rescue operations, and nor is EU, says head of Frontex agency

The head of the EU border agency has said that saving migrants’ lives in the Mediterranean should not be the priority for the maritime patrols he is in charge of, despite the clamour for a more humane response from Europe following the deaths of an estimated 800 people at sea at the weekend.

On the eve of an emergency EU summit on the immigration crisis, Fabrice Leggeri, the head of Frontex, flatly dismissed turning the Triton border patrol mission off the coast of Italy into a search and rescue operation.
