Closures Force Dangerous Crossings with Smugglers

(Istanbul) – Turkey has all but closed its borders to Syrian asylum seekers and is summarily pushing back Syrians detected as they try to cross, Human Rights Watch said today. Syrians described Turkish border guards intercepting them at or near the border, in some cases beating them, and pushing them and dozens of others back into Syria or detaining and then summarily expelling them along with hundreds of others.

During the second half of October 2015, Human Rights Watch interviewed 51 Syrians in Turkey who had fled airstrikes and other violence in Syria. All said it was common knowledge among Syrians that they could only enter Turkey using smugglers. They described men, women, and terrified children trying to clamber at smuggler crossings across steep terrain at night for many hours surrounded by gunfire.

GENEVA, Nov 24 (Reuters) – About 1,000 refugees and migrants are stuck at the main crossing point into Macedonia from Greece as authorities deny entry to some nationalities in contravention of international law, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

„A new humanitarian situation is developing in Europe that needs urgent attention,“ Adrian Edwards of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) told a news briefing.

Yasmin drückt ihre beiden Kinder an sich und betet, dass sie jemand findet. Hier im Dunkeln auf dem Meer zwischen Lesbos und dem türkischen Festland. Der Wind peitscht die Gischt bei jeder Welle in das schwarze Schlauchboot, 53 Menschen hocken darin, eng zusammengedrängt, durchnässt bis auf die Haut. Bei Tag kann man von der türkischen Küste aus die griechische Insel Lesbos erkennen. Sie ist nur zehn Kilometer entfernt. Jetzt aber sieht man nur Schwarz. Drei Stunden ist es her, dass der kleine Motor des Bootes aufgehört hat zu brummen. Seitdem treiben sie durch die Dunkelheit, versuchen vergeblich, die türkische oder griechische Polizei zu erreichen.

Abbandonati nella terra di nessuno

Frontiera greco-macedone. Più di 2000 migranti bloccati al freddo dalle autorità di Skopje

Sono più di 2000 i migranti in attesa alla frontiera greco-macedone, in una terra di nessuno, perduta nelle lande sconfinate del nord della Grecia, di fianco al villaggio di Idomeni. E’ uno dei tanti snodi del «corridoio balcanico» che ha visto passare da inizio gennaio 600.000 uomini, donne e bambini. Sbarcati sulle isole i migranti sono obbligati a registrarsi nei centri di identificazione che si stanno trasformando in «hotspot», per poter comprare un biglietto per la nave che li porterà ad Atene. Dalla capitale greca, in autobus, raggiungono Idomeni, per poi continuare verso la Macedonia, in Serbia, Croazia ed Austria.

Symbolic act comes as thousands of stranded people protest over Macedonia’s decision to block those not from Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan

Seven men have sewed their mouths shut and more than a thousand Iranians, Moroccans and Pakistanis have blocked a train line on the Greek-Macedonian border, in protest against a recent decision by some Balkan countries to block certain nationalities from heading towards northern Europe.

For the first time since hundreds of thousands of people began marching through the Balkans earlier this year, the Macedonian government began filtering them last week on the basis of their perceived need, and is now preventing access for those not from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. The move has led to fears of a migrant logjam in Greece and sparked fury among those trapped on the border.

Die Kritik wiegt schwer: Die Menschenrechtsorganisation Human Rights Watch (HRW) wirft der Türkei vor, bereits seit Monaten Flüchtlinge aus dem benachbarten Bürgerkriegsland Syrien an der Grenze abzuweisen und sie so in die Hände von Schlepperbanden zu treiben.

LESBOS (Grèce), 10 novembre 2015 – Ce qui me choque le plus dans cette couverture, c’est de me dire qu’on n’est pas en zone de guerre. Qu’on travaille en zone de paix. Mais les émotions qui passent par mon objectif sont dignes d’une scène de guerre.

J’ai travaillé en Syrie et en Libye. Photographier la guerre, je connais. Quand on va là-bas, on s’attend à ce genre de scènes. Mais pas à Lesbos.

A Lesbos, la souffrance humaine ne diffère pas de celle qu’on croise dans une guerre. De savoir que ce n’est pas le cas rend les choses encore plus émotionnelles. Et beaucoup plus douloureuses. […]

Viele Flüchtlinge sind auf der griechischen Insel obdachlos, der Winter könnte ihre Situation weiter verschlechtern

Lesbos/Wien – Wütende politische Äußerungen sind normalerweise nicht das Metier der Hilfsorganisation Ärzte ohne Grenzen (MSF). Doch wenn es um die Beschreibung der Zustände für Flüchtlinge auf der griechischen Insel Lesbos geht, dann fehlen dem neuen Leiter der MSF-Mission, Daniel Huescar Lerena, die besonnenen Worte. „Das sind Orte voller Schande“, sagt Lerena. Die Lage in der östlichen Stadt Moria sei „absolut nicht unter Kontrolle“. Tausende Menschen würden ohne Unterschlupf auf offener Straße schlafen, so der Arzt.

Die griechischen Behörden seien so sehr mit administrativer Arbeit bei der Flüchtlingsregistrierung beschäftigt, dass sie auf das Wesentliche vergessen würden: „Es braucht eine humanitäre Antwort auf die Krise.“

Moroccans, Iranians and Pakistanis on Greece’s northern border with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) blocked rail traffic and demanded passage to western Europe on Monday, stranded by a policy of filtering migrants in the Balkans that has raised human rights concerns.

One Iranian man, declaring a hunger strike, stripped to the waist, sewed his lips together with nylon and sat down in front of lines of Macedonian riot police.

Asked by Reuters where he wanted to go, the man, a 34-year-old electrical engineer named Hamid, said: „To any free country in the world. I cannot go back. I will be hanged.“
