Alarm Phone Statement

A boat with 46 people on board capsized on the way to the Canary Islands yesterday evening. The Alarm Phone was alerted by a contact person in Morocco who informed us about a boat, which had left on Tuesday morning at 3am from Layoun, trying to reach the Canary Islands. Only 22 young men could be rescued to Spain. One dead body was found and 23 persons are still missing. According to the collective Caminando Fronteras, Salvamento Maritimo was alerted for the first time on Tuesday at 10am and had located the vessel before 2pm. Nevertheless, the rescue-operation started 8 hours later, when the boat had already capsized. How is that possible?

CAIRO (Ma’an) — Egyptian forces on Sunday shot and killed 15 Sudanese migrants who were attempting to illegally cross the border into Israel, Egyptian security sources said.

The sources, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the 15 people were among 23 migrants attempting to illegally cross the border from Egypt’s Rafah city in the northern Sinai into Israel when Egyptian soldiers opened fire.

Rescue services take another 22 survivors to safety on Gran Canaria

Twenty-four people are missing after the migrant boat in which they were traveling from Western Sahara to the Canary Islands capsized 128 nautical miles southwest of the archipelago on Tuesday evening.

Maritime rescue services have taken another 22 survivors to safety at Puerto de Arguineguín, in Mogán, Las Palmas province.

39 Emergency Situations in Europe’s maritime borderzones

In the past week, the Alarm Phone was in contact once again with hundreds of travellers who attempted to cross sea borders. We dealt with 38 emergency situations in the Aegean Sea and 1 in the Western Mediterranean Sea. On Wednesday the 11th of November, yet again, many people died at sea. 14 refugees, including 7 children, drowned in Turkish waters when their vessel capsized. 27 travellers were rescued by the Turkish coastguards. ISTANBUL, Nov 17 (Reuters) – Greece and Turkey must fight human trafficking together and coordinate the work of their police and coast guards to help tackle the refugee crisis, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras wrote in a Turkish newspaper on Tuesday.

Tsipras is due to visit Turkey later on Tuesday, where he and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu will attend a friendly soccer match between the two countries in Istanbul. They are scheduled to hold bilateral talks on Wednesday.

Der Freitag: Herr Dobbs, wie viele Kinder sind gerade staatenlos?

Leo Dobbs: Wir schätzen, dass es über zehn Millionen Staatenlose weltweit gibt, davon sind ungefähr drei Millionen Kinder.

Wie wird man staatenlos?

Wenn ein Kind dessen Eltern aus einem Land kommen, in dem man die Staatsangehörigkeit über den Geburtsort bekommt, im Ausland geboren wird, dann ist es staatenlos. Zumindest dann, wenn das Kind in einem Land geboren wird, in dem die Staatsangehörigkeit über die Eltern vergeben wird. In Kriegszeiten ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit deshalb höher, staatenlos zu werden. Menschen fliehen und kriegen Kinder in fremden Ländern. Oder sie verlieren ihre Dokumente auf der Reise.
