The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has joined with other UN agencies in calling for concerted action from the international community to address the deeply concerning problem of the loss of life, injury, trauma and serious human rights violations affecting migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees traveling by sea.

Wer in den letzten Monaten an den Flüchtlingsprotesten in Berlin teilgenommen hat, kennt »Sista Mimi«. Die 36-jährige kenianische Rapperin war treibende Kraft der Berliner Flüchtlingsbewegung, der sie mit ihrer Kritik an der Diskriminierung, Ausgrenzung und Isolation von Geflüchteten sowie am Rassismus auf allen Ebenen eine Stimme verlieh. Am 10. Dezember ist Mimi eingeschlafen und nicht wieder aufgewacht.

Salvamento Marítimo ha rescatado del mar el cuerpo sin vida de un hombre de origen subsahariano después de que una embarcación de recreo diera con él a unas 26 millas al sur de Motril (Granada), de manera que será trasladado hasta el puerto de la citada localidad para su identificación.

Just over a year ago, in October 2013, two boats carrying refugees and migrants from North Africa to Europe capsized off the Italian island of Lampedusa, killing over 500 passengers. The tragedy prompted the Italian navy to launch a search and rescue operation called Mare Nostrum (Our Sea), which has helped rescue more than 150,000 migrants attempting the dangerous Mediterranean crossing in the past year.
