Various NGOs report that they continued in the early hours of the first day of 2017 to rescue migrants from the Mediterranean Sea setting off from Libya.
The Maltese-based Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) rescue ship, the Aquarius, carried out its first search and rescue operation just outside Libyan territorial waters in the early hours of the first of January 2017 saving 114 people. The horror continues’’ reported MSF.

The Maltese EU Presidency is expected to put more focus on Europe’s Southern Neighbourhood. What can be expected from Malta in this policy area in the coming months?
Our presidency will take place during a very interesting and challenging juncture for the EU, a juncture that none of us was expecting even a year ago. Our priorities had to be transformed to respond better to these particular challenges we are facing.

Il rischio di essere stuprate durante la fuga verso il Mediterraneo e l’Europa è così alto che, prima di avventurarsi in Libia dal Sudan o dal Niger, numerose migranti, per evitare una possibile, quasi certa gravidanza, si sottopongono, per almeno tre mesi, a iniezioni di forti dosi di contraccettivi. La notizia di questa massiccia “assunzione preventiva” di farmaci (spesso con pesanti conseguenze permanenti sulla salute) era filtrata a Roma, mesi fa, in alcune confidenze raccolte da medici e operatori sanitari dei centri di accoglienza della Croce Rossa. Ora è arrivata la piena conferma dall’ultimo, terribile rapporto Onu sulla situazione dei profughi in Libia, sulla base di una serie di testimonianze di donne di varie nazionalità arrivate dal Sudan.

Altri migranti sono sbarcati oggi a Trapani dopo essere stati soccorsi nel Canale di Sicilia dalla nave della nostra Marina Militare “Diciotti”. In totale 270 persone, un centinaio di nigeriani, alcuni del Bangladesh e dall’area sub sahariana. Dalla nave, che si è ormeggiata nel primo pomeriggio al molo Ronciglio, dove è stato allestito un solido cordone di sicurezza e di accoglienza, forze dell’ordine, Cri, Protezione Civile, Volontari, sono anche scese otto salme, i corpi senza vita di otto uomini che la nave della nostra Guardia Costiera ha preso a bordo durante la navigazione verso Trapani, trasbordati da una nave militare inglese e da un rimorchiatore, migranti che facevano parte di altri barconi intercettati su quella che è diventata la “rotta del dolore”, tra la Libia e la Sicilia.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) assisted 140 stranded Nigerian migrants, including 83 women and 57 men, three migrants in need of medical assistance, and six unaccompanied child migrants to voluntarily return home to Nigeria from Libya.
The IOM charter flight, which was coordinated in close cooperation with the Libyan authorities, the Nigerian Embassy and Libya’s Directorate for Combating Irregular Migration (DCIM) departed Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport at 1:20 pm on Tuesday 20 December and reached Lagos at 4:30 pm in the afternoon the same day.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that 18,722 have been rescued in maritime incidents off the western Libyan coastline in 2016. Between 2-16 December 165 were rescued and 51 bodies were retrieved from sea.
The majority of those rescued, 139 on 14 December, were off the coast of Zuwara. There were 20 estimated fatalities. Off the coast of Tajura 49 were rescued between 5-11 December. While off Zawia 26 were rescued and two bodies were retrieved on 13 December.
These latest maritime incidents figures come as the IOM reports that 358,156 migrants or refugees entered Europe by sea through Italy or Greece up to 19 December. Through Italy, 179,523 arrived by sea, overwhelmingly through Libya, representing a 20 percent rise on 2015 figures.
The IOM also reports that there were 4,901 deaths at sea which represents one death for every 73 migrants/refugees who arrive safely in Europe.

Desde la caída de Muamar el Gadafi, Libia se ha convertido en uno de los principales países desde donde los refugiados llegan a Europa y la inexistencia de un Gobierno estable impide el cierre de la ruta pretendido por los líderes europeos. La operación militar Sofía que la UE lanzó en el Mediterráneo en 2015 para „luchar contra las mafias“ tampoco está funcionando: este año han llegado y han muerto más migrantes en su intento de llegar a Italia que durante el mismo periodo del año pasado.

EU states aim to help Libya deport would-be migrants back home, and to keep open “all available options” on its response to Russia’s actions in Syria.
The Libya plan was mentioned in draft conclusions for the EU summit to take place in Brussels on Thursday (15 December).
“Initiatives need to be taken to offer assisted voluntary return opportunities to migrants stranded in Libya and curtail dangerous journeys”, the draft text, seen by EUobserver, said.

Der Spätherbst in diesem Jahr ist typisch für Sizilien. Unwetterartige Güsse, Nieselregen, stürmische Böen und windstille sonnige Tage wechseln einander ab. „Früher waren die stürmischen Tage die ruhigsten“, sagt Paul Erik Teigen. Der stämmige Mann ist Norweger, hat als Polizist in einem Städtchen nördlich der Hauptstadt Oslo gearbeitet. Bis er seinen Job eintauschte, zur europäischen Grenzschutzagentur Frontex wechselte und Kommandeur der „Siem Pilot“ wurde, eines von Norwegen gecharterten Versorgungsschiffes.
