VALLETTA, Malta — Tens of thousands of people seeking better lives are expected to trek across deserts and board unseaworthy boats in war-torn Libya this year in a desperate effort to reach European shores by way of Italy.
More than 181,000 people, most so-called “economic migrants” with little chance of being allowed to stay in Europe, attempted to cross the central Mediterranean last year from Libya, Africa’s nearest stretch of coast to Italy. About 4,500 died or disappeared.
Hundreds already have taken to the sea this month, braving the winter weather. In the latest reminder of the journey’s perils, more than 100 people were missing off Libya’s coast over the weekend after a migrant boat sunk.

A big number of illegal migrants were transferred to the shelter centers of the Tripoli-based Illegal Immigration Fight Center (IIFC) after being busted in Gargaresh district in the capital, the Special Deterrent Force (SDF) declared on Sunday.
“After storming into the drugs and alcohol dens in Gargaresh, our forces nabbed a number of African illegal migrants.” The SDF said on Facebook, adding that it kept some of the migrants at its headquarters as they are suspected to be part of organized gangs that work in making and selling liquor.

Bei einem Bootsunglück vor der libyschen Küste sind mindestens acht Menschen gestorben. Die Zahl könnte steigen, die Küstenwache konnte nur wenige Menschen retten.
Vor der Küste Libyens ist ein Flüchtlingsboot mit zahlreichen Menschen an Bord gekentert. Vier Menschen seien gerettet worden, teilte die italienische Küstenwache mit.
Bislang wurden acht Leichen geborgen. Die Zahl der Opfer könnte jedoch deutlich steigen, die Überlebenden gaben an, dass sich mehr als 100 Flüchtlinge an Bord befunden hätten.
Nach tagelangen Unruhen in der tunesischen Grenzregion wird die Grenze für die kommenden Tage wieder geöffnet. Die lokale tunesische Bevölkerung lebt von dem informellen grenzüberschreitenden Handel und sah sich durch das neue Grenzregime in ihrer wirtschaftlichen Existenz bedroht. Auf tunesischer Seite verhandelten Regierungsvertreter, auf libyscher Seite Vertreter der autonomen Grenzregion, zu der sowohl die Grenzabschnitte zu Tunesien wie auch ein beträchtlicher westlibyscher Küstenabschnitt gehört. Die Bevölkerung dieser westlibyschen Region lebt ebenfalls von dem informellen Warenexport nach Tunesien wie auch von dem Ablegen der Boat-people.

Libyan and Tunisian officials at the Ras Ajdair border agreed – temporarily – on Friday to resume the trading of commodities via the border crossing in the four coming days on a gradual basis before a Libyan-Libyan meeting takes place Saturday to finalize the agreement.
The Governor of Madnin in Tunisia, Taher Al-Matmati, said that the agreement looked going in the right direction as the resumption of trading goods via Ras Ajdair took a smooth start, adding that this step will pave a solid way for continuing talks by both sides over the obstacles they face and the measures, which should to be taken to end the issue, according to the Tunisian News Agency.

Disaster comes day after more than 550 migrants rescued between Libya and Italy
More than 100 refugees have drowned after a boat sank in rough conditions in the Mediterranean Sea as the crisis shows no sign of slowing.
The Italian Navy was searching for survivors from the vessel, which was believed to be carrying up to 110 people.
Only four survivors were pulled from the water, with at least eight bodies found so far.

Ci sono i trafficanti di uomini della Tripolitania dietro il tentato golpe dell’ex premier Ghwell. Le bande che si arricchiscono con i barconi di migranti spediti verso l’Italia non vogliono l’accordo fra Roma e il governo di Al-Sarraj. L’intesa prevede un massiccio aiuto italiano nel pattugliamento delle coste, per impedire le partenze, e nel controllo del confine a Sud, da dove arrivano gli immigrati africani. Per i trafficanti, in particolare quelli di Al-Khoms, una città a metà strada fra Tripoli e Misurata, è una minaccia mortale.

L’ambasciatore italiano in Libia smentisce che a Tripoli sia mai avvenuto un golpe e assicura che “le sedi istituzionali nelle quali opera il governo di accordo nazionale continuano a lavorare“, ma nella ex capitale la situazione rimane estremamente complicata e confusa. Il Consiglio presidenziale del governo di intesa nazionale di Fayez al Sarraj ha incaricato le forze armate di ristabilire l’ordine e contrastare i gruppi armati che rispondono gli ordini di Khalifa Ghwell – l’ex premier del dissolto governo libico islamista di salvezza nazionale – che giovedì ha preso possesso delle sedi dei ministeri della Difesa, dei Martiri e del Lavoro. Intanto secondo il portale Libya Herald la potente brigata dei “Rivoluzionari di Tripoli“, uno dei gruppi più numerosi e potenti, avrebbe dichiarato ieri sera lo stato di emergenza nella capitale.

The Maltese EU presidency wants a deal with Libya to curb migrant flows that would be loosely modelled on the EU-Turkey agreement.
A Maltese EU presidency spokesman told this website on Thursday (12 January) that Valletta and other EU capitals would examine the idea after Maltese prime minister Joseph Muscat spoke of it earlier in the day.
The Libya accord was “something the presidency will look into together with all the member states”, he said.

VALLETTA (Reuters) – Libya’s U.N.-backed government has not accepted proposals by Rome aimed at cutting migrant flows to Italy and the two sides are „far apart“ on the issue, Malta’s foreign minister said on Friday.
George Vella, whose government holds the rotating chair of European Union ministerial councils, said he would brief his EU counterparts in Brussels on Monday on a long conversation he held on Thursday on behalf of the Union with the foreign minister of Libya’s embattled, U.N.-backed premier, Fayez Seraj.
