Italien startet Rettungsaktion

Mehrere Schiffe sind erneut zu einem Hilfseinsatz im Mittelmeer ausgerückt: Nach Angaben der italienischen Küstenwache sind dort mindestens 4000 Flüchtlinge in Seenot geraten. Etwa 2200 Menschen seien bislang aus völlig überfüllten Schiffen gerettet worden.

Im Mittelmeer zwischen Libyen und Italien sind mindestens 4000 Menschen in Seenot geraten. Etwa 2200 Schiffbrüchige hätten bei ruhiger See bereits gerettet werden können, teilte die italienische Küstenwache am Abend mit. Der Rettungseinsatz werde fortgesetzt.

Binnen kurzer Zeit seien Notrufe von 22 verschiedenen Flüchtlingsbooten eingegangen. Mit zwei eigenen Schiffen, der Hilfe eines norwegischen Schiffes und der italienischen Marine werde versucht, die Flüchtlinge zu retten. Die Menschen befanden sich demnach auf vier Kuttern und 14 Schlauchbooten. Sie waren von der libyschen Küste gestartet.

Nahezu täglich versuchen Hunderte Menschen, von Afrika nach Europa zu gelangen. Dabei kommt es immer wieder zu schweren Unglücken. Erst vor wenigen Tagen war vor der libyschen Küste ein Kutter gekentert, auf dem bis zu 400 Flüchtlinge waren. Die italienische Küstenwache konnte 320 von ihnen retten. Schätzungen zufolge starben in diesem Jahr schon 2500 Flüchtlinge bei der gefährlichen Überfahrt.

Italian navy rescues 3,000 migrants in Mediterranean

The Italian navy rescued 3,000 migrants aboard more than a dozen boats in the Mediterranean today after receiving requests for help from 22 vessels, the coast guard said.
Operations are continuing and it is still unclear where the people will be taken, a spokesman said.

Europe is struggling to cope with record influx of refugees as migrants flee war in Middle Eastern countries such as Syria.

Italy rescuing 3,000 migrants, 18 boats in trouble

Italy’s coastguard said Saturday it was coordinating the rescue of up to 3,000 migrants from waters off Libya after receiving SOS calls from 18 different crowded vessels.

At least seven boats – six Italian and one from Norway – were involved in an operation to get the migrants safely off 14 rubber dinghies and four other vessels carrying an estimated total of between 2,000 and 3,000 people.

More than 104,000 migrants from Africa, the Middle East and South Asia have landed at Italy’s southern ports so far this year after being rescued in the Mediterranean.

A further 135,000-plus have landed in Greece and more than 2,300 people have died at sea while trying to make it to Europe with the help of people smugglers.

Police in Palermo, on the Italian island of Sicily, announced Saturday that they had arrested six Egyptian nationals on suspicion of people smuggling following the rescue of a stricken boat on August 19.

Testimony from the 432 migrants on board suggest the vessel had been packed with more than ten times the number of people it was designed for, with many of the passengers, including a number of women and children, locked below decks.

They had each paid the traffickers 2,000 euros for the passage from Egypt to Italy, according to statements given to police.

On board, the crew were reported to be demanding further payment to allow those locked in the hold to come up temporarily for air.

Humanitarian organizations say the surge in the numbers of people trying to reach European Union countries is the result of conflicts or repression in east Africa and the Middle East.

They have called on European governments to shoulder more of the burden of absorbing the wave of asylum seekers and to help create safer routes for them to reach Europe.

Tremila migranti su 22 barconi alla deriva nel Canale di Sicilia, quasi duemila in salvo

Emergenza al largo della Libia, tantissime richieste di soccorso alla Guardia Costiera. Sei scafisti arrestati a Palermo, donne e bambini chiusi sotto coperta e fatti uscire solo dopo il pagamento di un riscatto, il barcone partito dall’Egitto

Nuova ondata di migranti – si stima tra le duemila e le tremila persone – in arrivo dalla Libia: un numero impressionante di gommoni e barconi alla deriva hanno lanciato l’allarme chiedendo l’intervento dei mezzi di soccorso italiani ed europei schierati nel canale di Sicilia. Più di venti le richieste arrivate alla centrale operativa della guardia Costiera, che coordina gli interventi. Si tratta di 6 barconi e 16 gommoni con a bordo complessivamente, appunto, tra le duemila e le tremila persone.

Sono oltre 1700 i migranti che sono stati già salvati e recuperati nel corso della mattinata dai mezzi italiani e europei che stanno continuando ad operare nel Canale di Sicilia. Dalla notte scorsa sono 22 le imbarcazioni che hanno lanciato l’allarme, 16 gommoni e 6 barconi: Al momento 370 migranti che erano su un barcone si trovano a bordo di un mezzo della guardia di finanza che sta raggiungendo il porto di Messina. Altri 111 sono stati salvati da un gommone e recuperati dalla motovedetta Cp324 delle Capitanerie di porto partita da Lampedusa; 322 migranti sono invece a bordo della Siem Pilot, la nave norvegese inserita nel dispositivo Triton. Altri 507 sono stati tratti in salvo dalla nave Cigala Fulgosi della Marina Militare, che aggiungendosi ai 432 salvati dalla nave Vega portano a 939 il numero delle persone salvate oggi dalla Marina italiana. La Guardia Costiera riferisce che altri 187 migranti su due gommoni sono stati tratti in salvo dalla motovedetta Cp 291. I 432 migranti con nave Vega arriveranno lunedì mattina al molo Quattro Venti del porto di Palermo. La Cigala Fulgosi invece approderà ad Augusta dopo una sosta a Lampedusa per sbarcare un migrante bisognoso di cure mediche.

I migranti, rende noto la Marina militare, si trovavano a bordo di due barconi sovraffollati e senza le minime dotazioni di sicurezza. Al momento il porto di sbarco dei migranti non è ancora stato comunicato dal ministero dell’Interno. Nella zona sono presenti nave Fiorillo e nave Diciotti della Guardia Costiera, una nave norvegese inserita in Triton, 4 motovedette delle Capitanerie, mezzi della Marina Militare e della Guardia di Finanza. Le operazioni di recupero dei migranti sono in corso.

Arrestati sei scafisti. Intanto sei egiziani, sbarcati a Palermo giovedì scorso con centinaia di migranti, sono stati arrestati dalla polizia perché ritenuti gli scafisti dell’imbarcazione soccorsa in acque internazionali dalla nave Diciotti della Capitaneria di porto.

A permettere la loro individuazione sono stati, come spesso accade, i racconti degli stessi migranti i quali hanno anche descritto le drammatiche condizioni di salute e di pericolo che hanno vissuto durante il viaggio. Secondo i loro racconti, durante la navigazione, decine di donne e bambini sarebbero stati chiusi a chiave sotto coperta e fatti uscire soltanto dopo il pagamento, da parte dei parenti, di un ulteriore cospicuo importo quale riscatto. Sono accusati di favoreggiamento dell’immigrazione clandestina. I sei sono Mustopha Taysir, Solah Ahmed, Mohammud Alli, Mohammed Abdella, Mohammed Taysir e Ala Mohamed Shafi ed hanno un’età compresa tra i 42 e i 24 anni.

L’imbarcazione trasportava 432 migranti, tra siriani, egiziani, palestinesi, iracheni, etiopi, eritrei, somali e sudanesi: 359, di cui 60 donne e 56 bambini, sono arrivati a Palermo la mattina del 20 agosto, mentre gli altri 73 sono stati fatti sbarcare a Taranto.

Stavolta partiti dall’Egitto. Secondo le testimonianze raccolte, l’imbarcazione sarebbe partita dall’Egitto e non come solitamente accade dalla Libia. I migranti avrebbero pagato duemila dollari ciascuno per salire su un’imbarcazione che avrebbe potuto ospitare al massimo una trentina di persone e su cui invece ne sono state caricate oltre 400. Sembrerebbe inoltre che solo una protesta dei migranti, perplessi sulla capacità del natante di trasportare così tante persone, avrebbe costretto gli scafisti a ridurre il numero di passeggeri a 432 rispetto ai previsti 550.

Migrants crisis: More than 2,000 people rescued near Libya coast

More than 2,000 migrants and refugees have been rescued from boats off the coast of Libya in one of the biggest single-day operations mounted, Italy’s coastguards have said.

Distress calls came from more than 20 vessels, AFP reported.

More than 2,000 people have died this year in attempts to reach Europe in overcrowded, unseaworthy boats.

The route from Libya to Italy is one of the busiest for those trying to enter Europe.

Of the 264,500 migrants the United Nations says have crossed the Mediterranean so far this year, close to 104,000 have landed in Italy. Another 160,000 arrived in Greece.

Two Italian navy ships were involved in Saturday’s rescue effort. Responding to two wooden boats in danger of sinking, the Cigala Fulgosi picked up 507 people and the Vega 432, the navy said.

Various other Italian vessels were involved in the rescue effort, as well as the Norwegian military ship Siem Pilot, which has been deployed as part of the EU’s Triton patrol mission.

A boat belonging to humanitarian group Doctors without Borders rescued 311 people, including a newborn baby.

The coastguard said patrol boats had boarded a total of just under 1,000 people from various unseaworthy fishing boats and inflatables from Friday night to Saturday morning.

At least another 1,000 people were reported to be headed for Italian ports on other boats.

The increase in rescues prompted criticism of the centre-left Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

„This must be a joke. We are using our own forces to do the people smugglers‘ business for them and ensure we are invaded,“ said Maurizio Gasparri, a senator for Silvio Berlusconi’s centre-right Forza Italia party.

Populist anti-immigration politician Matteo Salvini called on the government to take the migrants and refugees to disused Italian oil rigs off Libya.

Humanitarian groups say the surge in numbers is because of conflicts and repression in Africa and the Middle East, and European governments should do more to create safe routes to Europe.

Meanwhile, police in the city of Palermo in Sicily have arrested six Egyptian nationals on suspicion of people smuggling after a rescue on 19 August.

The vessel was carrying 432 people – more than 10 times as many as it was designed for. Some of those on board said they had to pay smugglers to come up for air from the cargo hold, AFP reported.
