Lettera Aperta

Open Letter

To the Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation, to the President of the Region of Sicily, to the Prefect of Catania, to the Police Superintendent of Catania, to the President of the Port Authority of Catania, to the Commander of the Harbor of Catania, to the Mayor of Catania:

Around the 18th of July, 2017, as made known through the press, the boat C-Star (40 meters long, built in 1975, waving the flag of Djibouti) is predicted to arrive in the port of Catania. The racist and xenophobic group, “Generazione Identitaria” has rented the boat in order to block, through paramilitary actions, migrants that attempt to cross the Mediterranean, hampering the precious rescue operations of the NGOs, of the humanitarian boats, which are themselves increasingly criminalized.

The boat’s stay in the port of Catania, or in other Sicilian ports, would be in order to embark the necessary provisions for this “mission” and for the embarkation of “volunteers” enlisted for this paramilitary operation.

The following signatory associations ask the addressed authorities to block the use of the port’s infrastructures to C-Star currently being administered by the organization “Generazione Identitaria” and to take a stance towards the competent authorities. In our opinion, it would be a grave matter if the docking and use of public infrastructure were granted to organizations that have the intention of completing paramilitary actions in the Mediterranean Sea, including intercepting the embarkation of migrants and violating thus the legal obligation of bringing them to the nearest safe port, which certainly does not include the Libyan one.

We also hold that the presence of a ship that is not coordinated with the coast guard may create obstacles for the rescue operations, creating grave dangers for the shipwrecked and for the personnel operating in the sea.
This operation is a racist one, fed by false and tendentious propaganda, which we cannot endorse with any kind of logistical support or institutional silence.

The following associations declare an antiracist and antifascist campaign of supervision at the Port of Catania beginning Tuesday July 18, 2017:
