BARCELONA, Spain — Spanish authorities say more than 50 Moroccan and Spanish border guards were injured repelling around 1,100 African migrants who attempted to storm a border fence and enter Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta.
A regional government spokesman told The Associated Press that 50 Moroccan and five Spanish border guards were injured early on Sunday when the large group of migrants tried to enter Spain.
The spokesman says two migrants managed to reach Spanish soil. Both were injured in scaling the six-meter (20-foot) -high border fence and were taken to a hospital by Spanish police. He spoke anonymously in line with government policy.
Another 100 migrants climbed the fence, but Spanish agents sent them directly back to Morocco.
Last month, more than 400 migrants succeeded in breaching Ceuta’s fence.

Solo unas 50 personas han logrado superar el durísimo control marroquí encaramándose al vallado, en el mismo punto por el que hasta en tres ocasiones lo habían conseguido otros compatriotas en los últimos meses.

Hundreds of migrants try to storm border into Spain’s enclave of Ceuta
Around 1,100 sub-Saharan African migrants tried to cross into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco on Sunday by storming a border fence, though most were eventually turned back, the Spanish government said.
Dozens of migrants made it to the top of the 6 meter barbed wire fence in the early hours of Sunday before being lifted down by cranes, footage from local TV station Faro TV showed.
Only two people were allowed into Ceuta to be taken to hospital while the rest were returned to Morocco, the Spanish government said in a statement.
Five Spanish police and 50 from Morocco were injured, the government added, after migrants used rocks and metal bars to try and break through gates to access the fence and clashed with authorities.
Spain’s two enclaves in Morocco, Ceuta and Melilla, are often used as entry points into Europe for African migrants, who either climb over their border fences or try to swim along the coast.
Spain has drawn criticism from human rights groups for allowing some migrants to be immediately turned back to Morocco in such incidents. They argue that skipping the lengthier deportation procedures deprives people of the opportunity to claim asylum.
In early December more than 400 sub-Saharan African migrants managed to force their way over the Ceuta border fence.
However, Libya has become a more common departure point for African migrants, most of whom come from sub-Saharan countries and attempt the crossing to Italy by boat.
2016 was the deadliest year ever for migrants in the Mediterranean, with almost 5,000 deaths, according to the International Organization for Migration.
Separately on Sunday, Spanish police said a Moroccan woman was arrested in Ceuta last week for trying to smuggle a 19-year-old migrant from Gabon across the border with Spain curled up inside a suitcase.

Rund 1100 afrikanische Flüchtlinge haben versucht, in die spanische Exklave Ceuta in Marokko zu gelangen. Dabei ging es gewalttätig zu. Etliche Sicherheitskräfte wurden dabei verletzt.
Mehr als 1000 Migranten und Flüchtlinge aus dem südlichen Afrika haben in der Nacht zum Neujahrstag versucht, über den Absperrzaun in die spanische Exklave Ceuta in Marokko zu gelangen. Dabei wurden 50 Mitglieder der marokkanischen Sicherheitskräfte und fünf spanische Polizisten verletzt, teilten die spanischen Behörden mit.
Die Behörden in Ceuta beschrieben das Vorgehen der Migranten als „extrem gewalttätig“. Diese hätten Metallstäbe, Drahtscheren und Steine eingesetzt, einer der verletzten Beamten habe ein Auge verloren.
Rund 100 Menschen war es gelungen, auf den ersten von zwei Absperrzäunen zu klettern. Zwei Männer schafften es Berichte zufolge, spanischen Boden zu erreichen. Beide hätten sich beim Klettern über den sechs Meter hohen Grenzzaun Verletzungen zugezogen. Die spanische Polizei brachte sie ins Krankenhaus.
Anfang Dezember war es 400 Migranten gelungen, auf das Gebiet von Ceuta vorzudringen. Immer wieder versuchen Schutzsuchende, auf diese Weise EU-Gebiet zu erreichen.
