Beim Kentern zweier Flüchtlingsboote vor der libyschen Küste sind möglicherweise mehrere hundert Menschen ums Leben gekommen.

Wie der britische Sender BBC unter Berufung auf Augenzeugen berichtet, wurden mindestens hundert Tote in ein Krankenhaus westlich von Tripolis gebracht. Die Küstenwache suche weiter nach Überlebenden. Nach den bisher vorliegenden Informationen hatte eines der Boote etwa 400 Menschen an Bord, auf dem anderen befanden sich demnach rund 50 Flüchtlinge, zumeist aus Afrika. – Die Internationale Organisation für Migration hatte zuletzt mitgeteilt, dass in diesem Jahr schon mehr als 2.300 Menschen bei dem Versuch ertrunken sind, per Boot über das Mittelmeer nach Europa zu gelangen.

Vor der Küste Libyens ist ein Boot mit 400 Flüchtlingen an Bord gekentert. Etwa die Hälfte von ihnen sei nach Angaben der Küstenwache gerettet worden, rund hundert Leichen wurden geborgen.

Das Boot mit etwa 400 Flüchtlingen an Bord stach von Zuwara aus in See, die Stadt im Westen Libyens gilt als Hochburg der Schleuser. Kurz darauf geriet das Schiff unweit der Küste in Seenot und kenterte.

Die libysche Küstenwache konnte nach eigenen Angaben rund 200 Menschen aus dem Mittelmeer retten. Sie seien in ein Gefangenenlager gebracht worden. In dem Bürgerkriegsland werden derzeit Tausende Migranten in überfüllten Camps festgehalten.

Die Hilfsaktion läuft noch, aber die Behörden befürchten, dass rund 200 Flüchtlinge bei dem Unglück ertrunken sind. Viele Menschen seien von den Schleusern unter Deck eingesperrt worden, als das Boot sank. Obwohl das Schiff nur rund einen Kilometer vor der Küste kenterte, kam so für viele jede Hilfe zu spät.

Ein Bewohner von Zuwara sagte der BBC, es seien bereits rund hundert Leichen in das Krankenhaus der Stadt gebracht worden. Laut seinen Angaben stammen die Opfer aus Syrien, Pakistan, Bangladesch und mehreren afrikanischen Ländern. Zahlreiche weitere Leichen sollen noch im Wasser treiben, wegen der Dunkelheit konnten sie zunächst nicht geborgen werden.

Bislang sind in diesem Jahr nach Erkenntnissen der Internationalen Organisation für Migration mehr als 2300 Menschen bei dem Versuch ertrunken, Europa per Boot zu erreichen. Mindestens 100.000 Flüchtlinge haben Italien auf dem Seeweg erreicht, 160.000 sind über das Mittelmeer nach Griechenland gelangt.

Migrant crisis: Libya boats capsize off Zuwara carrying hundreds

Hundreds of people are feared dead after two boats carrying up to 500 migrants capsized off the Libyan city of Zuwara, residents and officials say.

The first boat, which signalled for help early on Thursday, had nearly 50 people on board. The second overcrowded boat, which sank much later, had about 400 passengers.

Officials said about 200 people had been rescued by the Libyan coast guard but many people appeared trapped in the hold when the boat capsized.

A detention facility for illegal migrants in Sabratha, west of Tripoli, received 147 people, an official told Reuters.

At least 100 bodies were taken to a hospital in Zuwara, west of Tripoli, a resident told the BBC.

The victims included migrants from Syria, Bangladesh and several sub-Saharan African countries, the resident said, but the information could not be independently verified.

About 2,400 migrants have died trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe so far this year, the UN says.

More than 100,000 others have landed in Italy, whilst another 160,000 have crossed to Greece.

On Wednesday, the bodies of at least 51 people were found in the hold of a stricken ship off Libya’s coast.

They were picked up by a Swedish coastguard ship that also rescued more than 400 survivors – among at least 3,000 migrants saved that day.

The Swedish ship, Poseidon, docked in the port of Palermo, Sicily, on Thursday.

On Saturday, about 4,400 migrants were rescued from boats off the coast of Libya, in one of the biggest single-day operations mounted to date.

Many of those who attempt the journey are fleeing conflict or persecution, and set off from Libya in unseaworthy boats organised by smugglers. Libya has had two competing governments for the past year and is largely ruled by rival militias.

The Libyan coastguard has limited capacity to undertake large-scale rescue missions at sea, BBC North Africa correspondent Rana Jawad reports from Tunis.

Meanwhile, in Austria, police said they hoped to soon establish how many people died in a parked lorry near the Hungarian border. They suspected it could be as many as 50 people, almost certainly migrants.

The issue of the influx of migrants into Europe through land routes was raised at a summit in Vienna on Thursday.

Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz, highlighted the need to deal with the large number of migrants heading to the EU via Western Balkan nations.

He stressed the „whole idea of the European Union without borders inside is in danger“ if the bloc’s external borders were not secure.

Si temono centinaia di vittime in altri due naufragi di migranti nel Mediterraneo, questa volta al largo delle coste libiche occidentali, dopo che ieri nella stiva di un barcone sono stati trovati i corpi di 52 profughi morti asfissiati. Ad affondare, secondo una ricostruzione della Bbc che cita „residenti e responsabili“ libici, sono stati due barconi: uno, che ha lanciato una richiesta di aiuto nelle scorse ore, aveva a bordo circa 50 persone mentre „il secondo, che è affondato molto dopo, portava 400 passeggeri“. „La Guardia costiera libica sta conducendo un’operazione di soccorso dell’imbarcazione ma si teme che la maggior parte di coloro che erano a bordo siano morti“, riferisce ancora il sito dell’emittente britannica precisando che i naufragi sono avvenuti al largo della città di Zuwara, al confine con la Tunisia. Sempre secondo la Bbc, almeno 100 corpi senza vita sono stati trasportati all’ospedale di Zuwara. Le vittime includono migranti da Siria, Bangladesh e diversi paesi dell’Africa sub-sahariana. La Guardia costiera libica ha fatto sapere che le ricerche riprenderanno domani.

Secondo un funzionario della sicurezza libica, delle 400 persone a bordo del secondo barcone affondato ieri sera al momento solo 201 sono stati tratti in salvo e si teme che gli altri siano morti, intrappolati nello scafo affondato. La Guardia Costiera libica riferisce che dei 201 tratti in salvo 147 sono stati spostati in un campo di detenzione per clandestini a Sabratha.

Se le prime informazioni fossero confermate, si tratterebbe dell’ennesima strage nel Mediterraneo, avvenuta nel giorno in cui in Austria sono stati trovati decine di cadaveri di migranti in un tir abbandonato su un’autostrada. In serata è arrivata al porto di Palermo la nave svedese con a bordo le salme dei 52 profughi morti asfissiati nella stiva del barcone che li stava portando in Sicilia. A bordo c’erano anche 571 migranti soccorsi nel Canale di Sicilia fra loro 67 minori e 54 donne.

A scoprire i cadaveri sono stati gli uomini dell’equipaggio della nave svedese che ha soccorsi i 439 extracomunitari a bordo del barcone. Alcuni marinai, saliti a bordo dell’imbarcazione su indicazione dei migranti, hanno aperto la stiva e hanno scoperto i cadaveri. A fornire aiuto ai migranti il team di supporto psicologico di Medici senza frontiere e gli operatori di Save the Children. Sul molo anche un camion frigorifero noleggiato dal Comune per trasportare le salme al cimitero dei Rotoli.

La procura apre un fascicolo, lo sfogo dei pm: „Troppo pochi sette magistrati“. La procura di Palermo ha aperto un’inchiesta sulla morte dei 52 migranti. L’indagine, coordinata dal procuratore aggiunto Maurizio Scalia, è ancora a carico di ignoti e ipotizza il favoreggiamento dell’immigrazione clandestina e l’omicidio plurimo. Il magistrato ha delegato alla Squadra Mobile gli interrogatori dei profughi che potrebbero, come già accaduto in passato, portare all’individuazione degli scafisti dell’imbarcazione.

Da mesi alle prese con sbarchi, la Procura ha creato un gruppo di sostituti che si occupano delle indagini relative: ne fanno parte sette magistrati, quattro della dda e tre dell’ordinario. Ma Scalia avverte: „Troppo pochi, abbiamo enormi difficoltà ad indagare“. „Mi dispiace ammetterlo, ma siamo in serie difficoltà nella gestione delle indagini sui trafficanti di uomini e sulle tragedie in mare, come quella dei 52 morti. Al momento il pool da me coordinato è composto da sette magistrati, ma non bastano. Dovremo ampliarlo ulteriormente“.

Difficile anche „trovare degli interpreti per i testimoni, per gli incidenti probatori. Perché molti dei testimoni che abbiamo ascoltato non vogliono restare a Palermo, ma vogliono lasciare al più presto il Paese. Insomma, sono inchieste particolarmente complesse – continua il pm – Sia noi che la Polizia siamo in difficoltà perché dobbiamo gestire tante situazioni. Lo sbarco in sé ci dà problemi relativi perché è un tipo di lavoro standardizzato e sappiamo come muoverci. Però c’è il problema che si sono accumulati nell’ultimo periodo una serie di sbarchi, con l’arresto di diversi scafisti. I colleghi che sono già impegnati su questo fronte avranno adesso una serie di scadenze e di udienze, ecco perché parlo di difficoltà. E‘ necessario ampliare per questo motivo il gruppo“. […]
