Mauritania’s defence policy begins with its borders.
„Mauritania, like many other countries, is faced with the challenge of ensuring control of its borders in a regional context of an evolving security situation,“ European Union (EU) Ambassador Hans-Georg Gerstenlauer said at the Rosso post opening on January 23rd. „Border management plays a key role in countering all forms of smuggling. One response to this challenge is the effective management of flows of people entering and leaving according to international agreements and laws,“ the ambassador added.
The new post is one of eleven financed by the EU, in partnership with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and Mauritania’s Territorial Security Directorate.

Il pleuvait sur Tunis en ce 28 janvier 2013. Les quelque cent réfugiés arrivés la veille du camp de Choucha dans la capitale, épuisés, attendaient sous la pluie devant les portes closes de l’UNHCR.
« Je viens de Choucha », répond un jeune réfugié coiffé d’un bonnet aux couleurs classiques de la bannière nigériane quand on lui demande d’où il vient. « Je suis de Choucha » insiste-t-il, même après lui avoir posé la question autrement et lui avoir demandé de quel pays il venait.

Camp de Choucha : les migrants manifestent à Tunis

C’est un peu le coup de la dernière chance pour les migrants du camp de Choucha qui se sont vu refuser le statut de réfugié. Ils ont quitté le camp hier soir pour venir ce matin à Tunis où ils ont décidé d’organiser une manifestation. Ils sont une centaine et espèrent se faire entendre par le UNHCR, l’Agence des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés en organisant un sit-in Place des Droits de l’Homme à Tunis.

The Libyan government has ordered 50 rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBS) from French company Sillinger for delivery in March this year. […] semi-rigid inflatable boats ranging between 3.80 metres and 12 meters in length to the Libyan armed forces. […] The 1200 RIB UM is one of the largest and most advanced of Sillinger’s military offerings and is able to carry up to 25 people. Weapons options include a 7.62 or 5.56 mm gun on each side and a 12.7 mm machinegun on the front. […] Sillinger boats are widely used by French Navy commandos and the French Customs, particularly the 580 RIB UM, a boat designed for open sea surveillance or insertion operations.“

Le ministère de l’Intérieur a publié son palmarès 2012: 36 822 personnes, hommes, femmes, enfants expulsés contre 32 912 en 2011 (+ 11,9 %).
On ne peut que ressentir de la honte à l’énoncé de tels chiffres, des dizaines de milliers d’existences brisées, des gens chassés, humiliés, spoliés, des familles écartelées entre les continents. L’Amicale de Maliens expulsés (AME) assure que les expulsés « finissent mendiants, fous ou suicidés ». Bravo à tous ceux qui organisent et prêtent la main à une si belle mission.

The bodies of 21 migrants were found on a beach on the Aegean island of Lesbos, December 15, 2012, after the sinking of their boat. A young Afghan of 16 years, one of only two survivors indicated that the boat had left the coast of Turkey, had thirty people aboard, mostly Afghans, when it capsized because of bad weather. Efi Latsoudi, resident and volunteer Mytilene the charity « To Chorio tou Oloi Mazi », which helped the families of the victims in their efforts, discusses the moments of this drama, and the obstacles, and indifferenceof the authorities.
