Malta’s ‘push back’ stand-off: what can Australia learn?
Malta has become the latest country to try to “push back” asylum seekers, implementing a policy similar to that being advocated by the Coalition as its “Real Solution” to the phenomenon of boats arriving on Australian shores.
In policies reminiscent of Australia, the Maltese government is scrambling to appear tough on migration and depict the arrival of asylum seekers as a crisis that warrants a security response.

Drei Viertel aller Auswanderer aus Marokko leben heute in Europa. Sie stellen damit, nach der türkischen Bevölkerung, die zweitgrößte Migrantengruppe auf dem Kontinent. Die meisten von ihnen haben sich in Frankreich, Spanien, Belgien und den Niederlanden niedergelassen.

About 250 refugees from Eritrea started a Protest Demonstration today in Lampedusa. Main demand: no to give their fingerprints in italy. They know well about the consequences with Dublin II and demand to leave the Island without the Fingerprint registration. They went Out from the closed camp for this collective action after fruitless negitiations the days before.
The protesting refugees finished their Demonstration with a sit-in in front of the church. The Police promised, that a first small group will be transferred tomorrow without fingerprinting and thus they all should return into the camp. But the refugees decided to stay also over night, they do not believe and they demand the Transfer for all.

This article is about people who left Choucha, and I understand the first sentence like this that 34 people who tried to leave by boat and were rescued on Wednesday morning and put in a center in Ben Guerdane, now left for another center in Tunis. The article continues: 12 women and 3 children from Choucha (?) were transfered to an accommodation in Medenine, and the Red Crescent is looking for more places for other refugees. UNHCR is checking their files in Zarzis, because they are asylum seekers (? I thought, all this is over?). On Tuesday, 83 people from different nationalities were saved in a shipwreck of a rubber boat, 52 miles north-west of Zarzis after their depatures from Zouara in Libya. 4 Sudanese people among them had been in Choucha before. They had got 1500 Dinar from UNHCR after accepting local integration. But they preferred to return to Libya and try to emigrate “illegally”. On the other hand, 9 refugees left for the USA, 11 others will join them on the 21th and others on the 22nd of July.
