At least 219 migrants and refugees are believed to have drowned in the Mediterranean already this year, more than double than during the same period a year ago, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday.
Following interviews with four survivors of a weekend shipwreck, the agency said nearly 180 people were feared to have been aboard a boat that capsized off the coast of Libya, not 110 as earlier thought.

Die EU finanziert den Bau von Internierungslagern für Migranten in Weißrussland. Laut einem internen Papier der EU-Kommission, das der taz vorliegt, sollen dafür in den nächsten Jahren 7 Millionen Euro nach Minsk überwiesen werden. Die „Migrants Accomodation Center“ genannten Zentren sollen teils offen, teils „closed type“ sein, wie es in der Projektbeschreibung heißt – eine Umschreibung dafür, dass die Insassen dort eingesperrt werden, bevor Weißrussland sie abschiebt oder sie freiwillig ausreisen.

- Etwa 280 000 Flüchtlinge sind 2016 nach Deutschland gekommen, berichtet Innenminister Thomas de Maizière. 2015 waren es noch 890 000.
- Die Zahl der Asylanträge lag 2016 bei insgesamt 745 545. Schutz erhielten gemäß der Genfer Flüchtlingskonvention 36,8 Prozent der Asylbewerber, über die entschieden wurde.
- Das UNHCR spricht allerdings davon, dass 2016 das bislang tödlichste Jahr für Flüchtlinge auf dem Mittelmeer war.

Die Zahl der Menschen, die auf ihrer Flucht Deutschland erreicht haben, ist im vergangenen Jahr deutlich gesunken. Insgesamt, so sagte Bundesinnenminister Thomas de Maizière (CDU) in Berlin, sind 2016 nach vorläufigen Berechnungen etwa 280 000 Menschen als Flüchtlinge gekommen. Das sind weniger als ein Drittel der Vorjahreszahl: 2015 waren es etwa 890 000 gewesen.

About 100 people are missing and feared dead after two boats capsized off Italy, increasing the estimated death toll among migrants in the Mediterranean this year to at least 5,000, a record, UN agencies have said.
Deaths linked to Mediterranean crossings by migrants trying to reach Europe have spiked in 2016. Last year, 3,771 deaths were recorded as more than a million people made the journey, mostly from Turkey to Greece. This year, about 360,000 people have crossed, most between Libya and Italy, with far more deadly results.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) assisted 140 stranded Nigerian migrants, including 83 women and 57 men, three migrants in need of medical assistance, and six unaccompanied child migrants to voluntarily return home to Nigeria from Libya.
The IOM charter flight, which was coordinated in close cooperation with the Libyan authorities, the Nigerian Embassy and Libya’s Directorate for Combating Irregular Migration (DCIM) departed Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport at 1:20 pm on Tuesday 20 December and reached Lagos at 4:30 pm in the afternoon the same day.

Regroupés dans le Centre d’accueil de la wilaya Tamanrasset (CAT) pour accomplir les formalités d’usage, plus de 989 migrants, 859 hommes, 45 femmes et 85 enfants de nationalités différentes ont été acheminés, mardi matin, vers In Guezzam avant de rallier le centre de réfugiés d’Agadez, au Niger, où ils devaient être transférés vers leur pays d’origine sous la houlette de l’Organisation internationale pour les migrations (OIM).

More asylum seekers have now reached Italy by boat in 2016 than in any previous year on record.
Nearly 171,000 people have arrived in Italy from north Africa since the start of the year, according to statistics compiled by the UN refugee agency and the Italian government. As of Monday, the total had surpassed the previous record of 170,000, set in 2014.

Most migrants in Libya want to remain in the country and do not intend to head for Europe. The revelation came in the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) latest Libya Displacement Tracking Matrix Flow Monitoring Analytical report.

Libya remains the main country of intended destination for 56 percent of all 1,946 migrants surveyed, with 17 percent destined for Italy, 7 percent to Germany and 5 percent to France, the report says.
The report says 81 to 83 percent of migrants from Egypt, Chad and Sudan surveyed intended to stay in Libya. Only 16 percent of Nigerian migrants intended to stay in Libya while 43 percent intended to travel to Italy, 12 percent to Italy, 12 percent to Germany and the remaining 29 percent to a variety of other countries.
The demographic age of migrants surveyed were in their twenties, averaging 29 and 98 percent were male. Most were from the countries bordering Libya: Niger, Egypt and Sudan. Nigerians were the fourth most represented group making up 10 percent of those surveyed.
