Preocupadas, alarmadas pero también cautelosas ante  la citación judicial a la que acudirá la activista Helena Maleno este martes en Marruecos en relación a una investigación penal sobre „tráfico de seres humanos“. ONG, juristas especializados en derechos humanos y representantes políticos han reaccionado „defendiendo a Maleno“.

Alrededor de 70 entidades han firmado el manifiesto en apoyo a la defensora de los derechos de los migrantes, lanzado este lunes por la ONG Caminando Fronteras. „Estamos preocupados por la situación de Helena Maleno y por lo que supone un cuestionamiento a su gran labor de defensa de los derechos de personas migrantes“, ha afirmado Irene Ortega, vocal de la Coordinadora de ONGD Española, que congrega a las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro más importantes del país.

Im französischen Wirtschafts-Establishment mehrt sich die Kritik an der französischen Militärstrategie in Mali, im Niger wie im gesamten Sahel. Die Militärs verwandelten die Sahara in ein neues Afghanistan. Die Wirtschaftshilfe vor allem für die Landbevölkerung sei lächerlich gering, und die staatliche Verwaltung verschwinde in den militarisierten Zonen. Demographie und fehlendes Arbeitseinkommen würden zu einer nächsten Massenmigration führen, dann aber nach Frankreich in den Großraum Paris, weil sich dort die Diaspora angesiedelt habe. In fünf Jahren sei bereits „alles zu spät“, wenn weiter militarisiert werde. Dann werde Europa sich wohl mit Stacheldraht einrollen müssen.

En octobre 2015, Serge Michailof publiait Africanistan, une somme qui présentait les défis auxquels l’Afrique faisait face et leurs conséquences dans un futur proche : démographie galopante, chômage massif de jeunes à demi-scolarisés. L’Afrique, expliquait-il, sera en 2050 plus peuplée que la Chine, mais les jeunes en âge de travailler y seront trois fois plus nombreux. L’une des premières explications de l’effondrement, à l’époque, de l’Afghanistan qu’il connaît bien.

Metal towers of lights reached out of the sea and flames belched into the midnight sky as the Aquarius reached Bouri Field, the largest oilfield in the Mediterranean, about 65 nautical miles north of Libya. I had been sitting cross-legged on deck of this rescue ship, listening to a group of West African men telling unbearable stories of captivity and brutality in Libya, the country they had just fled. Amadou concluded, to earnest nods all around, “God left Libya a long time ago.”

The Aquarius, chartered by the nongovernmental organization SOS MEDITERRANEE to rescue migrants while heading for Europe, had motored to the oilfield to collect 36 people—mainly Syrians and Egyptians— picked up earlier by an oil company supply ship. From the bridge of the Aquarius, a spotlight revealed the tiny wooden boat, tethered to the stern of the supply ship, bobbing like a toy in the black water.

Twenty-five asylum seekers from Africa arrived safely in Rome Thursday, using a Christian „humanitarian corridor“ set up for Syrians fleeing the war in their homeland.

„It was just a project but it became THE project, the way of the future,“ said Mario Morcone of the Italian interior ministry.

The 25 men, women and children from Somalia, Eritrea and South Sudan arrived in Rome before dawn on a flight from Ethiopia. They will be moved to centres across the country.

PIRAEUS (Reuters) – Greek authorities on Thursday moved a few hundred asylum-seekers from the island of Lesbos to the mainland in an effort to ease overcrowding in its camps.

Thousands of asylum-seekers have become stranded on Lesbos and four other islands close to Turkey since the European Union agreed a deal with Ankara in March 2016 to shut down the route through Greece.

“I came to heaven from hell,” said 30-year old Mohammad Firuz, who lived for two months in a state-run camp in Lesbos.

LONDON — African migrants in Libya face “unimaginable horrors,” the United Nations human rights commissioner declared. “Despicable,” the chairman of the African Union called their treatment. Several African countries recalled ambassadors in protest. Rwanda offered the migrants assistance.

The mid-November broadcast by CNN showing what was described as African migrants being auctioned off at a Libyan slave market — for as little as $100 each, at black-market exchange rates — has set off an international firestorm. The response from the European Union, however, has been notably muted.

That may partly reflect the gratification among European Union officials over Italy’s success at reducing the influx of migrants across the Mediterranean. Italy has been helping Libyans stop them at sea or keep them in Libya, despite the dangers they face there.

ABIDJAN taz | Den Sklavenhandel in Libyen beenden – das war der kleinste gemeinsame Nenner, auf den sich die Europäische und die Afrikanische Union am Ende ihres zweitägigen Gipfels in Abidjan, der Metropole der Elfenbeinküste, am Donnerstag einigten. Auch die Lösung, die ihnen dazu vorschwebt, ist die denkbar kleinste: In einer konzertierten Aktion sollen zunächst 3.800 Flüchtlinge, die in Lagern in der libyschen Hauptstadt Tripolis festsitzen, ausgeflogen werden. Das verkündeten am Donnerstagmittag die Präsidenten der beiden Organisationen, der Pole Donald Tusk und der Guineer Alpha Condé.

Die Migranten sollen unter anderem nach Niger und Tschad gebracht werden. Auch Ruanda und Nigeria haben angekündigt, Aufnahmeplätze bereit zu stellen. Marokko, das erst voriges Jahr wieder Mitglied der Afrikanischen Union wurde, will die für die Aktion nötigen Flugzeuge stellen.

Normally, the beaches of southern Tunisia are quiet in November. It is the start of the lean months, when few tourists arrive and the jobs that depend on them vanish. This year is different. Tunisia’s beaches have a new customer: Tunisians trying to go to Europe.

Between October 1 and November 8, more Tunisians took to the seas than in 2015 and 2016 combined, with Italy and Tunisia detaining 4,709. In total, more than 8,700 Tunisian migrants have been caught by Italy and Tunisia in 2017. There are suspicions this represents only a fraction of those who have left.

Italy has avoided contact with migrants returned to Libya. But Paolo Biondi, a human rights lawyer, argues that its support for the Libyan coast guard violates the principle of non-refoulement.

When a boatload of migrants sets off from Libya in the direction of Italy, smugglers often tell those on board to get to international waters before raising the alarm. The migrants hope to be picked up by rescue boats run by humanitarian NGOs and taken on to Italy where they can apply for asylum. The alternative is interception at the hands of the Libyan coast guard and a return to Libya.

Various international conventions bar governments from committing refoulement – the forced return of people to places where their lives or freedom would be threatened or where they would face a risk of torture. If a boat is picked up by the Libyan coast guard, which cooperates with the Italian navy, they will almost certainly be sent back to Libya where strong evidence suggests many face imprisonment in deplorable conditions and possible torture. Libya has no asylum law or procedures and makes no distinction between refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants.
