Hashish stash sinks after high sea drama for EU patrol

More than 13 tonnes of hashish sunk to the bottom of the Mediterranean after smugglers carrying the potent stash were intercepted by boats working for Triton, the EU’s coastal patrol operation said Friday.

Triton, charged with looking out for people-traffickers and their human cargoes, spotted the suspicious 25-metre fishing boat on Thursday.

Officers from the Spanish Civil Guard and Italy’s Financial Police tailed it and boarded it about 100 nautical miles (185km) to the south of Sardinia, arresting nine Egyptians.

OVERVIEW

As northern Mali experiences renewed violence, peace negotiations in Algiers offer a unique opportunity to resolve the crisis. But after almost two months of negotiations, peace remains a distant hope. The Malian government and participating armed groups have struggled to find common ground. Influential radical groups that are absent from the negotiating table are tempted to resort to violence to derail the process. Conflict resolution will require reconciliation of competing interests regarding security in the Sahara, organisation of the Malian state structure and local balance of power between divided communities in the north. In the face of armed clashes, it is tempting for mediators to move quickly to achieve a deal that would only guarantee security in the short term. But rushing the process will not help. Time is needed to build the foundations of sustainable peace.

IOM’s team providing assistance to migrants arriving in Europe by sea from North Africa and the Middle East recorded another 18 migrants reported missing, and presumed dead this week. The reports came from fellow passengers rescued by commercial and military vessels patrolling increasingly wintery and dangerous Mediterranean routes.Over 5,100 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea in the last 10 days, rescued by the ships plying waters in the Channel of Sicily in the framework of the Triton and Mare Nostrum operations, which will continue until the end of the year, when the Italian Government said it will end its Mare Nostrum mission (which this month officially changed its name into “Surveillance and Sea Security Mechanism”).

Bootsflüchtlinge aus Zentralafrika haben für 400 Dollar pro Person die sehr riskante Überfahrt auf Schlauchbooten von Libyen nach Lampedusa gewagt. Nun wurden 3 Personen von ihnen, die das „Kommando“ auf den 3 Booten hatten, unter schwersten Beschuldigungen – der Bildung einer Schlepperbande – kriminalisiert. Ihre Namen mit Geburtsdatum etc. wurden in italienischen Zeitungen veröffentlicht.

Der «arabische Frühling» ist nicht gescheitert. Er hat nur einen schmerzhaften, aber unaufhaltsamen Prozess in der Region beschleunigt.

Drei Massaker pflastern den Weg der arabischen Konterrevolution. Das erste passierte in Ägypten, wo man es offiziell am liebsten aus dem Gedächtnis streichen will. Wer darüber spricht, riskiert harte Strafen im restaurierten Polizeistaat. Am 14. August 2013 waren Sicherheitskräfte gegen Anhänger des gestürzten Präsidenten Mohammed Mursi auf dem Kairoer Rabaa-al-Adawiya-Platz vorgerückt. Die Islamisten hatten dort ein Zeltlager errichtet, um Mursis Wiedereinsetzung zu erzwingen; Bulldozer, Bodentruppen und Scharfschützen machten dem Treiben ein Ende. Sie töteten nachweislich 817, wahrscheinlich über 1000 Demonstranten – zumeist, wie Human Rights Watch ein Jahr später dokumentierte, durch gezielte Schüsse in Kopf, Hals oder Brust.

A call to all the ones affected by the War that Europeen Union leads against Migrants and Refugees at the External Borders aswell as inside its political and social order.

On 6 of February 2014, more migrants trying in collective action to overcome the border of the enclave of Ceuta (one of two direct borders of the Union Europeenne on African soil)across the sea. The Spanish Guardia Civil, fired on Migrantsin water with rubber bullets and tear gas. Moroccan police, supported by local racists, also participated in the murderoushunt of migrants. At least 15 people were murdered that day, and 50 of them were missing. Dozens more were injured andillegally pushed back to Morocco.
