Two weeks ago, the militiamen arrived in coastguard boats they seized during the 2011 revolt. After briefly boarding two tankers loading oil, they hoisted banners and flags and put up tents at the terminal – one on a rock outcrop in the harbor.

Four Italian tugboats that usually assist tankers to dock are now moored alongside one of the protesters‘ boats armed with a small cannon fastened to its bow. […]

Attempt to take over „open“ PIPKA migrant centre, „closed“ detention centre set up

FRONTEX claim that families were not expelled from their rooms refuted

Earlier this month the EU’s border agency FRONTEX was accused by migrant support groups on the Greek island of Mytilene of expelling migrant families from rooms that they were occupying, in order to set up their own offices at the PIPKA „open“ migrant centre. FRONTEX subsequently disputed these claims, saying that the events described never took place. Now groups on the island have issued a statement disputing FRONTEX’s statements and describing in detail their version of events.

Dangers multiplying at Libya’s border triangle

Ethnic tensions have resurfaced in Ghadames, which lies near Libya’s border triangle with Tunisia and Algeria, since the 2011 revolution that ultimately deposed Moammar Gadhafi. The minority Tuareg population in Ghadames has been accused of committing atrocities against other locals and in support of Gadhafi, leading to retaliatory attacks against the Tuareg.

The situation often seems deceptively peaceful inside the town, but lawlessness reigns just outside the city limits. Extremist and criminal networks are expanding in the region.

Wer Flüchtlingen in Seenot hilft, muss mit Strafen rechnen. Der ehemalige Kapitän der “Cap Anamur” aber hat es getan und “würde immer wieder so handeln”.

IM DIALOG spricht Schmidt mit Moderator Michael Krons über sein Engagement in der EU-Flüchtlingshilfe.

Sein Fall sorgte für Aufmerksamkeit: Im Juni 2004 ist das deutsche Hilfsschiff “Cap Anamur” auf Testfahrt zwischen Malta und Italien, da entdeckt die Besatzung um Kapitän Stefan Schmidt ein vollbesetztes Schlauchboot auf hoher See. Es handelt sich um 37 Flüchtlinge aus dem Sudan. Sie sind seit Tagen unterwegs, dem Verdursten nahe.

A few days after WatchTheMed (WTM) has contributed to reconstruct another case of a „left to die“ boat in the Mediterranean Sea, we are sending out a more general statement about the aims and visions of our monitoring project. This happens in the same week in which EUROSUR officially begins to operate. While this surveillance system has been presented as a means to save lives, the reconstruction of the two tragedies that have occurred on the 3rd and 11th of October in the Mediterranean have shown once again that the consequences of an increased militarisation will only be the opposite of what we are told: more control will bring more deaths and pain.
