IZMIR, Turkey

The death toll has risen to seven after a refugee boat sank off Turkey’s Aegean coast on Thursday evening, the Turkish Coast Guard confirmed Friday.

Two women and five children died when the boat carrying 18 people capsized at around 9 p.m. local time [1800GMT] near the Cesme district of the Aegean province of Izmir. The boat was headed to the Greek islands.

Three boats and one helicopter were dispatched by the Coast Guard in a rescue operation.

Nuovo dramma dell’immigrazione al largo delle coste della Libia. I corpi di undici persone sono stati trovati su un gommone durante una delle due operazioni di salvataggio coordinate dalla centrale operativa della Guardia Costiera. Sul gommone c’erano altri 167 migranti che sono stati recuperati dall’equipaggio della nave della Ong spagnola Proactiva Open Arms.

«O li salviamo o moriranno»

Il gommone era stato avvistato poco prima di mezzogiorno dalla nave della Ong spagnola. L’imbarcazione «era sul punto di naufragare con circa 140 persone a bordo e il mare agitato», ha scritto la Ong in un tweet. «Non c’è nessuno all’orizzonte. O li salviamo o moriranno». Pochi minuti fa un secondo tweet. «Abbiamo trovato 167 persone alla deriva e 11 morti, tra loro diverse donne incinte e madri». Al momento non ci sono ulteriori interventi di soccorso in corso e le condizioni del mare sono in peggioramento. Un’altra novantina di migranti erano invece a bordo di una piccola imbarcazione, soccorsa dalla nave di Save the Children.

The number of migrants arriving on Spain’s southern coast has more than doubled in 2017 compared to last year, as they avoid passing through conflict-wracked Libya on their way to Europe.

Eight boats carrying 380 people have been rescued since Wednesday (5 July) in the Alboran Sea, which connects northeastern Morocco and southeastern Spain, in the Western Mediterranean.

“We are worried because we are seeing numbers which we have not seen in years. And it’s a dangerous area, where the currents are very strong,” said the spokesman for the Spanish branch of rights group SOS Racisme, Mikel Araguas.

Last week, an inflatable dinghy that had apparently set out from Morocco with 52 people aboard was flipped over after being hit by a strong wave. Only three survivors were rescued by the Spanish coastguard.

Seven children are among at least 35 people feared dead after their rubber boat sank in the sea.

At least 35 refugees, including seven children, were feared drowned after their inflatable boat sank on Saturday off the Libyan coast.

Eighty-five refugees, including 18 women, were rescued after clinging to the boat with the help of fishermen who alerted the Libyan coastguard, said Issa al-Zarrouk, a coastguard official in Garabulli, 60 kilometres east of Tripoli.

Navy spokesman Ayoub Kacem said the boat sank six nautical miles northwest of Garabulli, and 10 fishing boats took part in the rescue.

„Ha sido dantesco, una auténtica tragedia. Son las cifras de desaparecidos más altas que nos hemos encontrado en la zona en la que trabajamos“, admite Miguel Zea, jefe del Centro Salvamento Marítimo Almería, después de pasar las últimas 48 horas pendiente del rastreo de una patera desaparecida con 52 personas a bordo. Cuando la localizaron, ya era tarde. Tan solo tres personas permanecían con vida, aferrándose a los restos de lo que había sido la embarcación en la que depositaron sus esperanzas para alcanzar las costas españolas.

„La patera estaba deshecha, casi deshinchada, semihundida… Y estas tres pobres criaturas enganchadas como podían en contacto con el agua“, explica Zea en declaraciones a eldiario.es.

El responsable del Centro de Salvamento de Almería, que ha coordinado las labores de rescate de la mayor tragedia del Mar de Alborán, relata las escasas palabras que fueron capaces de transmitir los tres supervivientes una vez ser rescatados.

Rettungseinsatz im Mittelmeer – Protest in Flüchtlingslager nahe Venedig gegen weitere Flüchtlinge

Rom (APA) – Ein schwedisches Militärschiff ist am Samstag mit 650 Migranten, die bei Rettungseinsätzen im Mittelmeer gerettet worden waren, in Catania eingetroffen. An Bord befanden sich auch neun Leichen, sieben Männer und zwei Frauen. Ermittlungen sind im Gange, um mutmaßliche Schlepper unter den Migranten zu lokalisieren, wie italienische Medien am Samstag berichteten.

Nach einem Bootsunglück im Mittelmeer werden rund 60 Flüchtlinge vermisst. Von den insgesamt 140 bis 150 Insassen eines Schlauchbootes, das vor der libyschen Küste gekentert war, konnten lediglich 80 Menschen gerettet werden, wie die Internationale Organisation für Migration (IOM) am Freitag in Rom mitteilte. IOM-Sprecher Flavio Di Giacomo sagte unter Berufung auf Überlebende, das Schlauchboot sei wenige Stunden nach seinem Start in Libyen mit Wasser vollgelaufen. Die Insassen hätten stundenlang ausgeharrt, bis ein Boot vorbeikam und sie rettete.

A group of 75 set out in three vehicles but were abandoned by traffickers, who feared the security forces.

A local official told the BBC that dozens of bodies had been buried, and 23 survivors were taken to the town, although one later died.

African migrants travel through the desert aiming to reach Libya and cross the Mediterranean to Europe.

Selten dürfte die mittelungarische Stadt Kecskemét, 100.000 Einwohner und gelegen im Herzen der Puszta, einen solchen Medienauftrieb erlebt haben: Am Gerichtshof der Stadt wird dieser Tage die Parndorfer Flüchtlingstragödie verhandelt. Im August 2015 waren in einem Kühllaster 71 Menschen erstickt. Das Ereignis hatte Angela Merkels Beschluss beeinflusst, die Grenzen für Flüchtlinge zu öffnen. Zum Prozessauftakt gegen die elf Angeklagten waren rund hundert Journalisten angereist, die meisten aus Österreich und Deutschland.

Dagegen hielt sich das Interesse der ungarischen Medien, vor allem das der regierungsnahen Presse, zunächst in Grenzen. Während einige wenige unabhängige ungarische Medien zum Auftakt des Prozesses und aus dem Gerichtssaal ausführliche Berichte brachten, verbreitete die staatliche ungarische Nachrichtenagentur MTI zunächst nur eine kurze Nachricht.

Humanitarian organisations call on EU to stop ‘demonising’ NGOs for saving lives at sea

More than 2,000 migrants have died attempting treacherous boat crossings to Europe so far this year, following three more shipwrecks announced on World Refugee Day.

The United Nations’ Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said 129 asylum seekers were missing and presumed dead after a dinghy launched by smugglers in Libya started taking on water and sank, leaving only four survivors from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Two rescued Sudanese men told the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) the boat had been at sea for several hours when a group of Libyans described as “pirates” approached in a speedboat and stole their motor.

Passing Libyan fishermen rescued the pair along with two Nigerian men who were the only other survivors, and put them on another migrant boat.
