Yesterday, Tuesday 23 May, new levels of disorder were reached in the daily tragedy unfolding in Mediterranean. In just one day, the teams aboard the Aquarius, operated jointly by SOS MEDITERRANEE and Doctors Without Borders, rescued a record 1004 people from 11 boats – 9 rubber boats and two wooden boats.

“This was one of the most complex and tricky rescue operations we have had since the beginning of our mission at sea – an absolute emergency,” said Mathias Menge, Search and Rescue coordinator aboard the Aquarius.

A new level of disorder was also reached, due to the fact that guns were fired by the Libyan coast guard. This unfolded during the rescue operations conducted by SOS MEDITERRANEE and MSF, in cooperation with NGO Save The Children and Jugend Rettet and under the coordination of the MRCC. Am heutigen Morgen oder Vormittag kenterte ein Schiff mit 500 Boat-people ca. 30 Seemeilen vor der westlibyschen Hafenstadt Zuwarah. 31 Tote wurden geborgen. 200 bis 300 Bootsflüchtlinge sollen im Wasser treiben. Nach unterschiedlichen Angaben von Nachrichtenagenturen und Zeitungen sollen inzwischen „alle“ ins Wasser Gefallene gerettet worden sein, oder aber es heisst, es würden noch „viele“ vermisst.

I corpi di 31 persone sono stati recuperati in mare dopo il naufragio di un barcone con a bordo circa 500 migranti diretto verso l’Italia, avvenuto a circa 30 miglia dalle coste libiche, a largo del porto di Zuara. Sono in corso le ricerche di altre persone finite in acqua, ma si temono numerosi dispersi.

Dozens on sinking dinghy lost at sea, rescued migrants tell UNHCR

ROME – Migrants rescued off the Libyan coast have described discovering a shipwrecked dinghy at sea, saying dozens of people including children were lost to the waves, the UNHCR and IOM said Tuesday.

The migrants, interviewed by the U.N. refugee agency and International Organization for Migration on Monday, said they had set off from Sabratah on Friday in a dinghy carrying 130 people.

Later that day they came across a dinghy that had almost sunk, with four men still clinging to it, who they rescued.

The survivors, four Nigerians, said they had set off from Tripoli a few hours earlier with 156 others, including many women and children, all of whom drowned when their rubber vessel deflated. Weiterlesen »

Dem UN-Flüchtlingshilfswerk zufolge sind seit Jahresbeginn 1.300 Menschen im Mittelmeer ertrunken. Damit überlebt einer von 37 Menschen die gefährliche Überfahrt nach Europa nicht. Vor einem Jahr starb statistisch gesehen jeder 136. Flüchtende.

Seit Jahresbeginn sind im Mittelmeer nach UN-Angaben mehr als 1.300 Flüchtlinge ertrunken. Von 37 Menschen, die die gefährliche Überfahrt wagten, sterbe einer, sagte eine Sprecherin des UN-Flüchtlingshilfswerks (UNHCR) am Dienstag in Genf. Vor einem Jahr sei statistisch nur einer von 136 Flüchtlingen ertrunken. Grund dafür sei auch, dass heute doppelt so viele Flüchtlinge auf ein Boot gezwängt würden als im vergangenen Jahr. Auch habe nur noch jedes zweite Boot ein Satellitentelefon dabei. Die Sprecherin lobte ausdrücklich Hilfsorganisationen für ihren Einsatz im Mittelmeer. Ohne sie gäbe es deutlich mehr Tote.

Audiomitschnitt belegt, dass Italiens Küstenwache Flüchtlinge 2013 in Seenot im Stich ließ

Am Montag veröffentlichte die italienische Wochenzeitung L’Espresso unter dem Titel »Der Schiffbruch der Kinder« den Text einer Audioaufnahme. Laut L’Espresso waren rund 480 Menschen an Bord eines Schiffes, das sich bereits am 11. Oktober 2013 im Seenot befand. Damals starben 268 Menschen, darunter 60 Kinder.

An jenem Tag geht in Rom bei der Zentrale der Küstenwache um 12.39 Uhr ein erster Anruf ein. Der Mann am Telefon nennt sich Mohammed Dschammo. Er sagt, er sei Arzt, erzählt, das Schiff sei havariert, sie befänden sich in Not. Die Mitarbeiterin am Telefon nimmt alle Daten auf: An Bord befänden sich überwiegend Kriegsflüchtlinge aus Syrien, die sich von der Stadt Suwara in Libyen aus auf den Weg nach Europa gemacht haben. Zum zweiten Mal fliehen sie aus einem Land, in dem Krieg herrscht.

MILAN — Almost four years ago, 268 Syrian refugees — including 60 children — lost their lives in a shipwreck about 60 miles south of Lampedusa, a small Italian island that sits between Sicily and Tunisia. It was considered one of the worst tragedies of the European refugee crisis, but a leaked audiotape published Monday by the magazine L’Espresso suggested that Italian authorities let the Syrians drown despite being alerted several hours earlier that the refugees’ ship was in danger.

On the evening of Oct. 10, 2013, a ship carrying at least 480 people left Zuwarah, in northwestern Libya, headed for Lampedusa. Most of the passengers were Syrians who had left their country for Libya when conflict erupted at home in 2011, and were then forced to flee Libya when fighting broke out there as well.

Their ship sailed until 5 p.m. the next day, when it capsized 61 nautical miles south of Lampedusa. While some of the passengers were rescued by Italian and Maltese ships, the majority died before rescuers arrived. The incident caused a media uproar that contributed to the creation of “Mare Nostrum,” the now-defunct Italian navy search-and-rescue operation (that program was replaced in late 2014 by a smaller-scale E.U. program called “Triton”).

Im Mittelmeer könnten rund 200 Menschen ertrunken sein. Überlebende berichteten den Hilfskräften und Küstenwachen in Italien und Libyen von gleich mehreren gesunkenen Booten. In einem Fall sagten Migranten laut italienischen Medien, ihr Schlauchboot habe die Luft verloren noch bevor die Retter eingetroffen seien. Mehr als 60 Menschen sollen dabei ertrunken sein.

Eleven have died and 200 are missing after two boats heading for Europe sink off the Libyan coast.

Eleven migrants have died and nearly 200 are missing after two boats carrying asylum seekers sank off the coast of Libya, UN agencies said on Monday citing survivors.

A spokesperson for the United Nations migration agency said more than 193 drowned over the weekend, and that those rescued showed signs of torture.

The Libyan Red Crescent said it had recovered 11 bodies on the shore in Zawiya.

Si è suicidato appendendosi con un cappio a un pilone verso i binari della ferrovia, davanti ai passanti, in via Ferrante Aporti. Un giovane migrante di colore, senza addosso documenti o altri elementi di riconoscimento, è stato trovato così dagli agenti di polizia stamattina, domenica, a poca distanza dal Casc, il centro di aiuto sociale del Comune che da qualche giorno sta svolgendo le funzioni che prima venivano svolte all’hub di via Sammartini. Qui vengono controllati i documenti e i profughi vengono inviati ai centri d’accoglienza in città. I migranti neo arrivati, secondo le nuove disposizioni, non possono più restare nella zona della stazione ma vengono inviati in via Lombroso e al Palasharp, in strutture dedicate ai senza fissa dimora.
