Distress at sea and endangered lives due to coastguard actions?
Evidence shows attacks on migrant boats in the Aegean Sea where engines were removed and boats punctured by coastguards

In the past two weeks, the Alarm Phone was alerted by refugees to four different distress situations in the Aegean Sea. They had encountered masked special units of coastguards who attacked them in the middle of the sea, between Turkey and the Greek islands. Their boats had not been in distress before, they might have been able to reach a place of safety on their own! After the attacks, they were left alone on drifting and/or sinking boats for hours until the Turkish coastguard came to their rescue.

Lesvos 18.7.2015 – The situation has not changed the last days: Many people arive on the island even althought the sea is rough. Around 1.000 daily. Two days ago 6 syrian people drawned on türkisch waters and 10 where rescued. They where on their way to Lesvos from Turkey. Yeasterday the solidarity group in Eftalou beach, welcoming every morning the people ariving on the beach, reported on their daily Youtube doku 14 boat arivals in 9 hours!

The very good news are that the Doctors without Borders organised a bus that drives back and forth, Molivos Mitilini, to transfer women and children first to Mytilini, so that they dont have to walk all the way.

Für 250 000 Menschen wurden Flüchtlingscamps gebaut; so entstanden Städte aus Containern und Zelten. Dort erhalten Flüchtlinge Nahrung, Wasser, medizinische Versorgung und psychologische Betreuung. Für Kinder und Jugendliche sind Schulen eingerichtet worden. Komfort ist in den Camps z. B. in Kilis oder Nazip, eine Flugstunde südöstlich von Istanbul, nahe der syrischen Grenze, nicht anzutreffen. L’Alto commissario Onu per i diritti umani Zeid Raad Al Hussein ha esortato l’Unione europea a compiere „passi coraggiosi“ in materia di immigrazione. „L’Ue dispone delle capacità per dare rifugio a un milione di profughi provenienti dai conflitti in Siria o in Libia“, ha affermato Al Hussein. „Ora basta demonizzare i rifugiati, chiedo ai Paesi dove vi è pace e benessere di prendere posizione contro questa tendenza molto pericolosa“, ha ribadito.

Mittelmeer: Mehr als 100.000 Bootsflüchtlinge seit Januar

Das Uno-Flüchtlingshilfswerk (UNHCR) in Genf spricht von einem „dramatischen Anstieg“. Seit Jahresbeginn hätten rund 103.000 Menschen ihr Leben auf der gefährlichen Route über das Mittelmeer riskiert, berichtet die Uno-Organisation. Die meisten der Flüchtlinge erreichten bei ihrer Überfahrt mit oft seeuntauglichen Schiffen die Küsten Italiens und Griechenlands:

  • 54.000 Flüchtlinge kamen bisher nach Italien
  • 48.000 erreichten Griechenland.
  • 920 weitere Ankömmlinge wurden in Spanien gezählt, 91 in Malta.

Almost 1,200 migrants – some crammed onto overcrowded inflatable dinghies – have been picked up by Greek authorities in the eastern Aegean Sea in the past two days.

Packed boats were being towed on to the shores of Kos yesterday, with refugees dropping to their knees to pray after completing the perilous journey.
