BRUSSELS – Turkey is appealing to the European Union to help it combat the phenomenon of ghost ships used by smugglers to send hundreds of migrants at a time toward European shores.
Turkey’s ambassador in Brussels, Selim Yenel, told EU lawmakers Wednesday that his country needs „proper information, coordination on these issues.“ He called on the EU to provide satellite imagery and other intelligence.

Summary of the Case:The shift team of the Watch The Med Alarm Phone received a distress call around 13:00h from passengers on a vessel near the Greek island of Mytilene. They informed the shift team that 35 people were in distress and stuck in the same position at sea for nearly two hours. The contact person appeared scared and in panic, stating repeatedly that they had little time left and urgently needed help. They were unable, however, to pass on their exact position.

Giorgos Chondros, a member of the executive board of Syriza, speaking to the APA news agency on Tuesday, said that the presence of a fence on the Greek border, which was built to keep out irregular immigrants trying to cross into Greek territory, is a source of disgrace for a democratic country such as theirs.

Turkish coast guard units have captured 333 migrants, mostly Syrian refugees, in a boat as they were attempting to sail to Europe.
The coast guard’s Mediterranean region command staged the operation late on Jan. 18, capturing 333 migrants on a boat off the southern province of Mersin.
The Mersin Governor’s Office said in a statement that it detected that merchant ships have often been used for the transition of migrants from Turkey to European countries in recent months.

Trotz der Dokumente, die der Verteidiger des Syrers vorlegte und gegen die Zeugenaussagen der Migranten die auf dem Schiff waren, nach denen der junge Mann keine Schuld an dem Schiffsunglück hatte und nicht der Lenker des Schiffs war, befand ihn das Gericht für schuldig. Bei dem Unglück verloren 11 Menschen ihr Leben, acht Kinder und drei Frauen.
Der deutsche und der französische Innenminister fordern die EU auf, Frontex vor die türkische Küste zu schicken, damit Frontex dort Flüchtlingsfrachter abfängt. Es ist ein Aufruf aus Berlin und Paris an die EU, internationale Rechte zu brechen. Zypern soll in das Projekt eingebunden werden.

Paris et Berlin entendent prendre les rênes de la politique migratoire européenne. Dans une lettre commune adressée au commissaire aux Migrations et aux Affaires intérieures, Dimitris Avramopoulos, les ministres de l’Intérieur français et allemand, Bernard Cazeneuve et Thomas de Maizière, demandent la mise en place d’un dispositif pour surveiller les mouvements de „bateaux suspects à proximité des côtes turques et chypriotes“. Au coeur du projet, la formation d’une équipe active 24 heures sur 24 au sein de l’agence européenne de surveillance aux frontières, Frontex. Objectif : améliorer la rapidité d’intervention des États lorsque l’un de ces bateaux est repéré.
