As EU-Turkey Anniversary Nears, Move Asylum Seekers to Mainland Safety

(Athens) – Thousands of asylum seekers are trapped on the Aegean islands in deplorable conditions and without access to adequate protection and basic services, nine human rights and humanitarian organizations said today as part of the #OpenTheIslands campaign. The Greek government should act immediately to end the “containment policy” that traps asylum seekers in these conditions on the islands and move them to safety on the mainland.

As the two-year anniversary of the EU-Turkey deal nears on March 18, 2018, more than 13,000 men, women, and children are trapped on the islands, according to Greek government figures.

Repeated reports by GCR beneficiaries on systematic pushbacks in the Evros region

Complaints and reports of illegal pushbacks of refugees in Evros have been consistent and increasing in numbers. According to them, persons in need of international protection, asylum seekers and recognized refugees, having crossed the Greek border through Evros, are arrested on Greek soil, detained and led to the border, accompanied by the police, wherefrom they are being pushed back to Turkey.

The Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) has repeatedly received relevant complaints, some of which are published today, which show an established procedure on the part of the authorities, while handling populations of third-country nationals who attempt irregular entry into the country. The way and the conditions under which these pushbacks take place add further to the arbitrary and contrary to the national and international law practice. The most disconcerting issue, however, is that, lately, the relevant reported cases seem to increase and become more systematic.

Report on illegal Pushbacks

According to the data of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs (MUP), in 2017 1,887 people, mostly from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, and Turkey, applied for international protection. Out of that number, 211 people received international protection, and 311 were returned from another EU Member State country based on the Dublin Decree. At present, there are about 430 people in the reception centers for asylum seekers.

On Wednesday last week the Welcome Initiative! And organizations: Center for Peace Studies, Are you Syrious?, and No-name Kitchen presented their fourth report on the illegal and violent expulsion of refugees from Croatia. They have warned that, given the frequency and patterns of police behavior, we cannot characterize it as isolated and sporadic cases of illegal expulsion as well as of benign „deterrence.“ Police behavior, by all means, represents planned and systematic measures of deprivation of liberty without a legal basis, the denial of access to international protection and violation of the non-refoulement principles. They also stressed that the UNHCR Serbia in 2017 recorded 3242 cases of unlawful expulsion of refugees from Croatia, where many refugees claim that they were denied access to international protection and are routinely abused.

CAIRO (AP) — Germany deported a group of Egyptians to Cairo over violations of residency requirements, including those whose asylum requests were rejected, Egyptian airport officials said Thursday.

The Egyptians say that 100 of their countrymen were sent home, nine of whom had been held in custody and were delivered without passports. Germany’s Interior Ministry however only acknowledged nine deportations. The discrepancy between the two figures could not immediately be reconciled, although the larger number would constitute the first action of such magnitude toward Egypt from Berlin.

Un autre corps a été rejeté par la mer. Il s’agit, selon les services de la protection civile d’un jeune âgé de près de 30 ans, non identifié. Le cadavre a été découvert, avant-hier, sur la plage «Les Andalouses» dans la commune d’El Ançor relevant de la daïra d’Ain El Turck (Oran). La dépouille en état de décomposition très avancé a été déposée à la morgue de l’hôpital, pour les besoins d’une enquête. Vêtu d’un gilet de sauvetage, il s’agirait selon toute vraisemblance du cadavre d’un candidat à l’émigration clandestine.

Für Cangül Suner* waren Griechen die Anderen, Feinde, die mit den Osmanen brachen und die Türkei bekämpften. „Als Kindern wurde uns in der Türkei beigebracht, Griechen nicht zu trauen“, erzählt sie. „Ich kannte keine Griechen, ich war nie in Griechenland und trotzdem hatte ich ein schreckliches Bild von dem Land.“

Nun sitzt Suner gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann und zwei ihrer vier Kinder in einer Altbauwohnung in Thessaloniki, im Norden Griechenlands. Sie trägt Kopftuch, ein langes Gewand. Sie blickt aus dem Fenster, schüttelt den Kopf und sagt: „Ich lag falsch. Die Griechen haben mir und meiner Familie das Leben gerettet.“

Presenting its 2018 Africom Posture Statement to Congress, U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Thomas D. Waldhauser, commander, U.S. Africa Command, testified in Washington DC yesterday before the House Armed Services Committee.

Waldhauser set out Africom’s main policy objectives in Libya:

“Turning to North Africa, our four primary objectives in Libya are: degrade terrorist groups who threaten U.S. interests and threaten to destabilize Libya and the region; avert civil war; support the political reconciliation process towards a unified central government; and assist to curb the flow of illegal migrants into Europe via Libya. Efforts by European allies and international organizations are underway to interdict the illicit flow of arms and drugs flowing into and through of North Africa due to porous borders and under-governed spaces.”

BERLIN/BAMAKO (Eigener Bericht) – Die Bundesregierung stockt das deutsche Kontingent der UN-Truppe in Mali (MINUSMA) weiter auf und forciert damit einmal mehr die Militarisierung des Sahel. Wie das Bundeskabinett gestern beschlossen hat, wird der deutsche MINUSMA-Anteil von knapp 1.000 auf bis zu 1.100 Soldaten vergrößert. Dabei räumt die Regierung selbst ein, dass sich die „Sicherheitslage“ in Mali im Laufe des mehr als fünfjährigen Einsatzes „verschlechtert“ hat. In der Tat haben jihadistische Milizen im Sahel, gegen die seit Jahren diverse Truppen im Rahmen der EU sowie der UNO operieren, die Zahl ihrer Anschläge im vergangenen Jahr mehr als verdoppelt und dabei 400 Menschen getötet – mehr als je zuvor. Zivile Organisationen aus dem Sahel üben scharfe Kritik an der westlichen Intervention. Berlin und Paris treiben zusätzlich zu ihren eigenen Einsätzen den Aufbau der „G5 Sahel“-Eingreiftruppe voran, die unter anderem von Saudi-Arabien finanziert wird. Das stärkt die Stellung Riads, das im Sahel mit dem Aufbau salafistischer Strukturen gegen die schiitische Minderheit vorgehen will.
