Three Spanish firefighters working with the NGO Proemaid on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos are looking for support from European Parliament ahead of standing trial on May 7 on charges of migrant smuggling, Euronews reported on Wednesday.

Seville firemen Manuel Blanco, Julio Latorre and Enrique Rodriguez could face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty of charges they say are based on a misunderstanding of their work with the NGO, which has involved rescuing dozens of refugees and migrants attempting the perilous crossing from Turkey into Greece and the European Union.

Nach den wahllosen Schüssen auf afrikanische Migrant*innen in Macerata Anfang Februar, bei denen eine Frau getötet und sechs Männer verletzt wurden, wurde nun der 54-jährige Senegalese Idy Diene in Florenz von einem Pensionär erschossen.

Era sul ponte Amerigo Vespucci di Firenze a vendere ombrelli, Idy Diene, 54 anni, quando è stato colpito da sei proiettili. A sparare il pensionato Roberto Pirrone. Il giorno dopo, circa cinquecento persone sono tornate sul ponte dove è stato ucciso Diene per dire no al razzismo e fermare la violenza da cui la comunità straniera della città si sente minacciata.

Di Diene sappiamo poche cose: era originario di Morola, una cittadina a settanta chilometri da Dakar, in Senegal. Era arrivato in Italia nel 2001 in aereo con un visto turistico. “Ha vissuto a Firenze per sette anni”, racconta Mor Thiame, un amico di Diene che con lui ha condiviso l’appartamento nel capoluogo fiorentino.
