MADRID (Reuters) – Alrededor de un centenar de inmigrantes subsaharianos consiguieron entrar el martes en Melilla tras saltar la valla fronteriza que separa Marruecos de la ciudad autónoma española, según datos de la Guardia Civil de Melilla.

El grupo formaba parte de otro más numeroso de alrededor de 300 personas que intentaron el acceso al enclave español en el norte de África sobre las 7 de la mañana.

Tres guardias civiles resultaron heridos y requirieron asistencia médica, según dijo a Reuters un portavoz del instituto armado, que agregó que los inmigrantes lanzaron piedras contra los agentes que estaban en la zona de La Hípica.

Los territorios españoles en el norte de África, Ceuta y Melilla, son a menudo usados como punto de ingreso a Europa por parte de inmigrantes africanos, que saltan por las vallas fronterizas o tratan de entrar nadando por la costa.

Cientos de inmigrantes esperan en los bosques marroquíes próximos a las dos ciudades autónomas una oportunidad para llegar a territorio español, a menudo protagonizando saltos masivos que aumenten las probabilidades de cruzar con éxito.

Spain: Migrants charge border fence; 6 injured

MADRID — Spanish officials say that about 300 migrants have tried to scramble across the six-meter border fence separating the north African enclave city Melilla from Morocco with many throwing stones and other objects at police.

Melilla’s Interior Ministry office say most of the migrants have been pushed back by Spanish and Moroccan police, but about 100 managed to enter the city.

It said three officers and three migrants were treated for injuries following Tuesday’s incident. One officer was injured in the hand by one of the hooks used by migrants to climb the fence.

Thousands of migrants from sub-Saharan countries try to enter Spain via its two north African enclave cities each year.

Those who make it across head for temporary migrant accommodation centers. They are eventually repatriated or let go.
