Libyan coastguard catches 195 migrants
The Libyan coastguard picked up two boats of migrants bound for Europe yesterday, one of which was discovered during a routine patrol.
The vessel, found off the coast of Garabulli by members of Tripoli Coastguard who were on a reconnaissance mission, had 103 illegal immigrants on board. It was escorted back to Tripoli Port and the migrants were taken to an illegal immigration detention centre in the capital’s Abu Saleem district.

Lampedusa island– Mediterranean meeting
On the 3rd October 2013, a few miles from the island of Lampedusa, 368 women, men and children lost their lives in their attempt to reach Europe.
A few days later and in the same waters, the sea swallowed hundreds of people coming from Syria.
These are just some of the thousands of victims of Europe’s frontiers: about twenty thousand in the last twenty-five years.
However, despite the crisis, the European Union has not stopped investing billions of euros in the militarization of its borders: in Lampedusa as in Melilla, through the Evros wall or the Frontex patrols, to the heart of the Lybian desert, where the Union has outsourced its control mechanisms.
Yet the frontiers of Europe do not produce only death.

Film-Dokumentation der wöchentlichen Desinfektion: Die Insassen, auch Frauen und Kinder, müssen sich im Innenhof des Lagers im Freien nackt ausziehen, in einer Schlange aufstellen und werden einzeln von oben bis unten mit Desinfektionsmittel abgespritzt. Dieses Geschehen im Lager Lampedusa ist seit langer Zeit bekannt, die Organisationen, die dort arbeiten (UNHCR, IOM, Rotes Kreuz, Save the Chilene) sehen das täglich – und schweigen.

Lampedusa tragedy – a case of political bravado gone wrong?

Documents, maps and eye-witness accounts seem to indicate that the Maltese government took what was the riskiest and least logical of the six choices it had available on 11 October, when the country was charged with coordinating the rescue of hundreds of Syrian migrants off Lampedusa.
Any of the other five choices could have prevented the migrant tragedy, but all the available evidence leads to the conclusion that Malta had tried to rescue the migrants on its own, instead of asking for the assistance that was available.

Immigrati: Bonino, operazione ‚Mare Nostrum‘ permette filtro rifugiati

Lo ha affermato il ministro degli Esteri, Emma Bonino, nel suo intervento davanti alle Commissioni Esteri di Camera e Senato, riunite oggi in seduta comune.

Wenn man sich die Papiere der EU oder aus dem Innenministerium anschaut, steht immer mehr das „Illegale“ im Vordergrund, die illegalen Schleuserorganisationen, die illegalen Migranten. Ähnliches ließ sich Anfang der 1990er beobachten, als der Ostblock zusammenbrach und über 400000 Asylbewerber nach Deutschland kamen. Auf einmal tauchten in offiziellen Papieren Begriffe wie Asylantenflut und Asylantenschwemme auf, als handele es sich um eine Naturkatastrophe. Gleichzeitig wurde die befristete Arbeitserlaubnis abgeschafft, die Menschen wurden abhängig von den Sozialleistungen des Staates. Seitdem hat sich das Klima wie man so schön sagt, nachhaltig verändert.

3 illegal migrants die as boat sinks off İzmir coast
A small boat sank off the İzmir coast on Monday, killing at least three illegal migrants attempting to reach the Greek island of Chios and leaving nine people lost at sea, according to initial reports. İzmir Governor Mustafa Toprak stated that a boat carrying illegal migrants, some of whom are reportedly of Syrian origin, sank off the coast of one of İzmir’s tourist destinations, Çeşme, during an attempt to cross to the Greek island.

Ripartiamo insieme. Tra le tante cose che ci ha consegnato l’assemblea online per la Carta di Lampedusa di venerdì sera certamente questa è quella che sintetizza più di altre lo spirito con cui da oggi è possibile rimettersi in cammino.
Cinquantanove postazioni internet collegate, oltre settanta associazioni, collettivi, piccole e grandi organizzazioni, una miriade di realtà di diversa estrazione che parlano diversi linguaggi, hanno dato vita, attraverso la piattaforma di webconference messa a disposizione da Global Project, ad uno straordinario momento di discussione ed elaborazione collettiva.
„[…] So war es auch am 11. Oktober, als Wasser in das völlig überfüllte Boot lief. Die Flüchtlinge gaben ihre geografische Position durch. Sie befanden sich 230 Kilometer von der Küste Maltas entfernt, aber nur 130 Kilometer von Lampedusa – allerdings in einem Gebiet, das zur „Such- und Rettungszone“ Maltas gehört. Also gab die Leitstelle zur Koordination der Seenotrettung in Rom den Fall an Malta ab. Als ein maltesisches Flugzeug endlich vor Ort eintraf und Schwimmwesten und Schlauchboote abwarf, war das Boot schon gesunken. Nur 212 Flüchtlinge konnten aus dem Meer gerettet werden. Sowohl die italienische Finanzpolizei, zuständig für Immigration, als auch die Küstenwache von Lampedusa, zuständig für Rettung aus Seenot, als auch ein mit Hubschrauber bestücktes Kriegsschiff der italienischen Marine, das nur 48 Kilometer entfernt war, hätten nachweislich zwei Stunden vor dem Sinken des Bootes vor Ort sein können. 268 Menschen hätten überlebt. No Maltese boats in Libya incident
No Malta-registered boats or Maltese citizens were involved in transporting 300 migrants stopped by the Libyan coastguard late last month, contrary to earlier media reports, the government said yesterday.
Libyan news agency Lana reported the migrants were on board three ‘Maltese-registered boats’ when they were apprehended on November 29.
The report was picked up by international news agency Reuters and widely reported in the local press.
