Medical staff in Calais say they are struggling to cope with the number of seriously injured migrants, who are taking ever greater risks attempting to get to the UK.

As French police confirmed the death of another migrant attempting to cross the Channel, Médecins du Monde, which has a semi-permanent base in “the jungle” migrant camp in Calais, said that the number of people needing urgent help had rocketed in recent days.

In Europa wird viel von Menschenwürde gesprochen und Asyl nur unter Lebensgefahr gewährt. Für diese Politik ist Calais das traurige Symbol.

Großbritannien und Frankreich investieren ein paar zusätzliche Millionen in die verstärkte Sicherung der Zugänge zum Eurotunnel unter dem Ärmelkanal. Auf beiden Seiten weiß man, dass auch das die Migranten keineswegs vom Versuch einer illegalen Überquerung abhalten wird. Und wie seit Jahren werden es einige früher oder später auch nach Großbritannien schaffen.

Nur: Das Risiko steigt fast proportional zur Höhe der Zäune und Mauern, die die Anlegestellen für die Fähren sowie die Tunneleinfahrt umgeben.

The Forgotten Frontline Of The Migrant Crisis

It’s late afternoon on the forested slopes of Mount Selouane. In single file or knots of friends, young West African men are trudging down the hillside to the dusty, dishevelled outskirts of the Moroccan village of Shadia. Nearly everyone is carrying an empty water bottle, part of their daily routine to fill them for free from standpipes outside the few general stores. They come as well to get a better network connection, to check their Facebook, make calls home, or catch up on friends who have made it to Europe. By nightfall, the growing agricultural village of half-finished apartments – and watchful local men – will transform once again. The West Africans will be gone; back in the relative safety of the forest, where more than 1,000 irregular migrants are camped. Shadia is 20km from the north-eastern city of Nador, which borders the Spanish port enclave of Melilla and doorway to Europe. That’s the goal of the visitors up in the Selouane: they are gambling that through luck or daring, they can make it through and into a better life.

Analysis: It is time to end the lie that a few hundred migrants trying to enter the UK via the Channel tunnel amount to a mass invasion

For once the Daily Mail has got it right with its demand to “End this Migrant Madness” but not in the way they mean it.

It is time to end this tabloid media pretence that nightly, repeated and mostly unsuccessful, attempts by a few hundred migrants to illegally enter Britain by way of the Channel tunnel amount to an invasion threat not seen since Hitler assembled his invasion barges in the autumn of 1940.

The “invasion thesis” is fuelled by the use of language that reduces the status of those who have fled from Syria, Eritrea and other failing states in the biggest movement of displaced people since the second world war to the single word of “illegals”.

Swedish coastguard fired warning shots at Italian navy boat off Libya after mistaking it for vessel belonging to smugglers earlier this week

Two European naval boats involved in Mediterranean migrant rescue missions were engaged in friendly fire this week off the coast of Libya, in what is believed to be the first incident of its kind.

The Swedish coastguard vessel Poseidon, which is part of an EU-led border patrol and rescue mission, fired warning shots at an speedboat driven by the Italian navy, fearing that it belonged instead to smugglers. Twice in the past few months, Libyan smugglers have clashed with coastguards as the Libyans attempt to retrieve their boats once the migrants have been rescued from them.

A spokeswoman for Frontex, the EU agency that runs the border patrol mission, said no one was hurt or in danger, and the situation was soon clarified and resolved. Ewa Moncure said: “The Italian boat slowed down, and was able to be identified, and that was it.”

De Sea-Watch mag bootvluchtelingen helpen, maar niet ingrijpen

Op zaterdag 12 juli nam de Amsterdamse slotenmaker Reinier Boere (38) afscheid van zijn vriendin, zijn vrienden en collega’s en vertrok hij naar Lampedusa. Terwijl Europa ruzie maakt over het plaatsen van 32.256 asielzoekers, werkt hij als matroos op een boot en maakt hij deel uit van een team dat helpt om bootmigranten uit de Middellandse Zee te vissen.

Reinier is vanaf het begin als vrijwilliger betrokken bij het Duits-Nederlandse burgerinitiatief Sea-Watch. De Sea-Watch is een 21 meter lange omgebouwde vissersboot uit Harlingen, die op open zee tussen Italië en Libië zoekt naar bootvluchtelingen. De bemanning heeft maar één doel: in nood geraakte vluchtelingen redden. Vooral in het ‚vluchtelingenhoogseizoen’– de maanden juli, augustus en september waarin de zee relatief rustig is – vaart de boot af en aan met wisselende groepen vrijwilligers aan boord; schippers, artsen en matrozen. Als er rubberbootjes met migranten in nood zijn, verleent Sea-Watch eerste hulp en alarmeren ze andere schepen om de bootmigranten mee te nemen naar Europees grondgebied. Zelf kan Sea-Watch geen migranten aan boord nemen – de vissersboot is veel te klein voor honderden wanhopige drenkelingen – maar op het schip liggen reddingsvesten, reddingsboten en een opblaasbaar vlot klaar om meteen in actie te komen. We spraken Reinier over zijn nobele avontuur.

A Sudanese woman was found dead in a lorry at the Tunnel this morning.
Two men died in the past two days. One was Sudanese or Eritrean according to the police, and the other Pakistani. The first man died yesterday night after being hit by a lorry. The young Pakinstani man died yesterday of his injuries after being run over on the motorway the night before.

Both men have not been named yet.
 
There have never been so many deaths in Calais, and that is due to the border being closed, for the will of the UK government who invested 12.000.000 euros in building a new fence. People are forced to take bigger risks to try and to to England.
 
There were 13 deaths since the beginning of June. 4 more bodies were found this year, thought to be of migrants who died while trying to swim across the Channel.
 
There were 15 deaths in Calais last year, that we know of.

Police violence has much to do with deaths at the Calais border. According to eye witnesses, a group of migrants were sprayed with CS gas in the face. A young Eritrean woman of 23 died as a direct result, her eyes were so sore that she could not see where she was going and was fatally injured by a vehicle while crossing the motorway, 24th July. Massenansturm: Briten wollen Eurotunnel gegen Flüchtlinge abdichten

Flüchtlinge versuchen immer wieder, über den Eurotunnel bei der nordfranzösischen Stadt Calais nach Großbritannien zu gelangen. Dabei ist auf der französischen Seite erneut ein Mensch ums Leben gekommen. Das teilte der Betreiber Eurotunnel mit. Der Flüchtling im Alter zwischen 25 und 30 Jahren stamme aus dem Sudan, schreibt die Nachrichtenagentur AFP. Er sei tödlich verunglückt, als er versuchte, auf einen Zug zu gelangen. Es war der neunte derartige Todesfall am Eurotunnel seit Anfang Juni.
