It was an early morning in the summer of 2013 when the fragile-seeming Sicilian 27-year-old took the first panicked call: hundreds of Syrians were lost in the Mediterranean aboard a boat taking on water.

„Cairo (AFP) – Five African migrants drowned on Monday after jumping into the Mediterranean as Egyptian coastguards raided a boat heading towards Italy, security officials said.
Twenty-five people, including the owner and crew of the vessel, were arrested after the raid on the boat near the city of Kafr al-Sheikh.
The nationalities of the dead have not yet been confirmed, the officials said.
The incident comes two days after the bodies of five Tunisian migrants trying to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa were recovered from the sea, while 49 others were rescued off the coast of Tunisia. […]“

Seeleute auf Handelsschiffen müssen immer öfter immer mehr Flüchtlinge aus dem Mittelmeer retten. Und setzen dabei ihr eigenes Leben aufs Spiel. Jetzt appellieren sie an die Regierungschefs der EU, ihrer Verantwortung in der humanitären Krise gerecht zu werden

Alle Seeleute auf allen Meeren stehen in der Verantwortung, in Seenot geratenen Menschen zu helfen. Tun sie es nicht, drohen ihnen möglicherweise strafrechtliche Folgen. Im Normalfall ist es kein Problem für große Handelsschiffe, Schiffbrüchige aufzunehmen. Auch wenn die Crew eines solchen Schiffes oft aus nicht mehr als 10 bis 20 Männern besteht, so haben die Schiffe doch die Tragfähigkeit, im Notfall auch 500 Schiffbrüchige aufzunehmen. Was im Normalfall aber nur selten vorkommt. Allein auf dem Mittelmeer ist das anders. Dort herrscht seit Jahren der Ausnahmezustand: Nahezu täglich geraten überladene Fischkutter und Schlauchboote mit Flüchtlingen in Seenot. Tausende jährlich ertrinken. Das Mittelmeer – es ist ein Massengrab.

Summary of the Case: On Thursday, the 09th of April 2015, the Alarm Phone shift team received a message from Father Mussie Zerai, alerting us to the case of more than a hundred displaced persons from Eritrea, Ethiopia and Syria who had left Egypt on a vessel on the 3rd of April. Following the message, they had stranded on a Greek island and were without food and water. After sending off a distress call in the early hours of the day no one had heard of them since. Das ägyptische Militär soll in den vergangenen Tagen ein grossen Flüchtlingsboot auf offenem Meer bombardiert haben. Das berichten anscheinend Flüchtlige eines anderen Boots, wie die algerische Zeitung „Journal d’Oranais“ berichtet. Die Angaben lassen sich derzeit nicht überprüfen.
Die ägyptische militarisierte Küstenwache hat in den vergangenen Monaten nachweislich mehrfach Flüchtlingsboote beschossen. Vor wenigen Tagen soll die ägyptische Marine Überlebende eines Flüchtlingsboots vor dem Nildelta noch bei der Rettungsaktion verhaftet und sofort abgeschoben haben. Aus der offiziösen ägyptischen Meldung lässt sich schliessen, dass mindestens 100 Bootsflüchtlinge ertrunken sind. Ob die Information zur Verhaftung und Abschiebung von über 100 Überlebenden nur eine Schutzbehauptung ist und in Wirklichkeit über 200 Bootsflüchtlinge bei der Schiffskatastrophe umgekommen sind, lässt sich derzeit nicht recherchieren.
Von allen Küstenwachen Nordafrikas steht die ägyptische Küstenwache und Polizei unter stärkstem Einfluss von Frontex und den italienischen Polizeiapparaten. Nach Ägypten – bekanntermassen die derzeit schlimmste Diktatur in Nordafrika – schiebt Italien ägyptische Bootsflüchtinge umgehend nach Landung ab.
Angehörige suchen nach Infos, nachdem in den letzten Tagen 200 Boat-people vor der Küste Griechenlands verschwunden sind.
The last information 12.30 the 100 people found near Gavdos – Creta were the ones who fall in the sea and swam. A rescue operation started for a boat in danger they are talking about a boat with 200 passengers. The 112 had received early this morning a distress calll from this boat.
Ca. 300 Eritrean, Ethiopean and Sirian refugees started by boat from the Egyptian Coast April 3. They landed on an island, perhaps in Greece, since some day without water and food, they sent an SOS with an Egyptian mobile phone this morning at 6:56 am, after this nothing. We don’t know what is going on with them, in which hands they are.
Ein Boot mit über 200 Bootsflüchtlingen unterschiedlicher Nationalität ist vor der Stadt Kafr el Sheikh (östlich von Alexandria) gesunken. Es befand sich auf der bekannten Meeresroute von dieser ägyptischen Stadt in Richtung Italien. Da sich an Bord auch ägyptische Flüchtlinge und MigrantInnen befanden, wird diese Nachricht möglicherweise größeren politischen Widerhall in Ägypten finden. Inzwischen zirkulieren Meldungen, dass die meisten Boat-people gerettet und sogleich verhaftet worden sind. Zwei Tote und fünf Verletzte seien geborgen worden.

On 13 August 2010 and in February 2011, during the eighteen days leading to Hosni Mubarak’s fall, a group of 231 resettled slum dweller families from the impoverished Duweiqa district of Cairo abandoned their allocated twenty three square-meter homes to squat liveable ones in Haram City, a budget gated-community marketed by developers and development practitioners as a new best-practice “cooperative” public-private partnerships for low-income housing. Angered that publicly subsidized, but privately controlled, low-income housing was being sold to the middle classes, they joined families from all over central Cairo to claim several hundred flats, bringing water, electricity technicians, and microbus stands to coordinate transport to the city center.
