„Max Merten leitete von August 1942 bis März 1944 als Kriegsverwaltungsrat die Abteilung „Verwaltung und Wirtschaft” beim Wehrmachtsbefehlshaber Saloniki-Ägäis in Saloniki. In dieser Funktion war Merten neben Alois Brunner und Dieter Wisliceny zentral am Massenmord an den Juden von Saloniki beteiligt. Zuvor hatte er mit dem Versprechen, 9.000 Männer aus der Zwangsarbeit auszulösen, von der jüdischen Gemeinde in Saloniki noch 1,9 Milliarden Drachmen erpresst. […]

Bei einem Besuch in Griechenland wurde er 1957 festgenommen und 1959 wegen seiner Taten während der Besatzungszeit zu 25 Jahren Haft verurteilt. Ein halbes Jahr später kam er auf Druck der Bundesregierung frei. Ein Ermittlungsverfahren vor dem Landgericht Berlin wegen Beihilfe zum Mord an über 50.000 Juden wurde 1968 eingestellt. […]“

The European commission is planning to establish immigrant-processing centres outside the EU for the first time, in a radical policy departure aimed at stemming the movement of hundreds of thousands of people across the Mediterranean.

Struggling to draft coherent immigration strategies at a time when the issue has become one of the most toxic in the politics of many EU countries, the European commission announced it was fast-tracking a policy paper on migration.

How are they being treated and what do they think of their new surroundings? We took a closer look at these questions in Perm, a city and region in the Ural Mountains, which in 2014 became one of the major hubs in Russia for Ukrainian refugees.

UNHCR unveils far-reaching proposals for European action in the Mediterranean Sea

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has sent a number of concrete proposals to the European Union to deal with the challenges posed by the thousands of refugees and migrants who risk their lives trying to reach Europe every year.

The proposals, made by UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres in a letter to the European Union, are part of UNHCR’s Central Mediterranean Sea Initiative (CMSI), which aims to encourage wide-ranging discussions with the European Commission and among European states and other concerned stakeholders to address the challenges of mixed migration in the Mediterranean Sea and to save lives.

I am glad to learn that the Minister (of Interiors) Angelino Alfano will present tomorrow at the meeting of EU MS Ministers of Interiors in Brussels a project for the opening, with UNHCR and IOM, of at least three spots for the regroupment of exiles in Niger, Sudan and Tunisia in order to allow to start there the procedures to ask asylum in Europe.
