Automatic expulsions at the Spanish-Moroccan land border under legal scrutiny

European Court of Human Rights questions Spain on “push backs” of refugees and migrants

Berlin / Madrid, 31 July 2015 – For the first time an international court will consider the unlawfulness of automatic expulsions – also known as “push backs” or “devoluciones en caliente” – at the Spanish-Moroccan land border. On 30 July 2015, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) published its first decision on a case brought by two sub-Saharan men – from Mali and the Ivory Coast respectively – who were summarily and collectively expelled from Spanish territory on 13 August 2014 as part of a group of over 75 individuals. This was not an isolated case, but the standard practice of Spanish border guards. Now, the ECtHR requests an answer from the Spanish government to the applicants’ claim that their rights under the European Convention on Human Rights were violated.

The Forgotten Frontline Of The Migrant Crisis

By Obinna Anyadike

It’s late afternoon on the forested slopes of Mount Selouane. In single file or knots of friends, young West African men are trudging down the hillside to the dusty, dishevelled outskirts of the Moroccan village of Shadia. Nearly everyone is carrying an empty water bottle, part of their daily routine to fill them for free from standpipes outside the few general stores. They come as well to get a better network connection, to check their Facebook, make calls home, or catch up on friends who have made it to Europe. By nightfall, the growing agricultural village of half-finished apartments – and watchful local men – will transform once again. The West Africans will be gone; back in the relative safety of the forest, where more than 1,000 irregular migrants are camped. Shadia is 20km from the north-eastern city of Nador, which borders the Spanish port enclave of Melilla and doorway to Europe. That’s the goal of the visitors up in the Selouane: they are gambling that through luck or daring, they can make it through and into a better life.

„Meet the man who rescued 600 migrants on his boat, and thinks others could do the same

Rick Noack

Thousands of migrants have died trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea in recent decades, but it’s looking likely that 2015 will be the deadliest year on record. This huge human toll is what led German businessmen Harald Höppner and Matthias Kuhnt to buy a ship, Sea Watch, to patrol the Mediterranean on their own, as WorldViews reported last year. The ship and its crew recently returned from their first mission. WorldViews spoke to Ingolf Werth, the captain of the ship, about why they are doing what they are doing.

A Sudanese woman was found dead in a lorry at the Tunnel this morning.
Two men died in the past two days. One was Sudanese or Eritrean according to the police, and the other Pakistani. The first man died yesterday night after being hit by a lorry. The young Pakinstani man died yesterday of his injuries after being run over on the motorway the night before.

Both men have not been named yet.

There have never been so many deaths in Calais, and that is due to the border being closed, for the will of the UK government who invested 12.000.000 euros in building a new fence. People are forced to take bigger risks to try and to to England.

There were 13 deaths since the beginning of June. 4 more bodies were found this year, thought to be of migrants who died while trying to swim across the Channel.

There were 15 deaths in Calais last year, that we know of.

NEW VIDEO ABOUT POLICE VIOLENCE BY NO BORDERS ACTIVISTS:
New post (must read):
Police violence has much to do with deaths at the Calais border. According to eye witnesses, a group of migrants were sprayed with CS gas in the face. A young Eritrean woman of 23 died as a direct result, her eyes were so sore that she could not see where she was going and was fatally injured by a vehicle while crossing the motorway, 24th July. Shame on the French State and the French police murderers!

Massenansturm: Briten wollen Eurotunnel gegen Flüchtlinge abdichten

EU to open Niger shelters to keep migrants out of Europe

By AFP

Several shelters are to open in Niger for illegal African immigrants in a bid to dissuade them from trying to reach Europe and instead offering local alternatives, the French interior minister said Friday.

The centres proposed by the European Union, in cooperation with Niger, „should be an opportunity to bring ambitious development policies for migrants and for states,“ said Bernard Cazeneuve in Niger’s capital Niamey after meeting President Mahamadou Issoufou.

‘We Found The Remains Of 14 People Below Decks’

by Bodger

Captain David Barry spoke with Áine Lawlor on the News at One about how the LE Niamh recovered 14 bodies from a wooden barge in the Mediterranean.

From the interview …

Captain David Barry: “Yesterday morning, she [LE Niamh] was tasked to carry out a rescue on a barge and this was north of Tripoli, Libya.

She picked up about 240 people from that and later that day she was tasked with a second vessel. They came across another an ex- it would have been an ex-fishing vessel with approximately 500 people on board. This vessel was grossly overcrowded. Even by the standards of what is happening down there and some of the people on board told our crew that there were casualties on board. So we transferred 210 people to our ship and a further, approximately 300, to a Médecins Sans Frontières ship, Dignity 1. At this stage, it was dark and our people carried out a search of the vessel, where unfortunately we found the remains of 14 people below decks.”
