‘We Found The Remains Of 14 People Below Decks’

by Bodger

Captain David Barry spoke with Áine Lawlor on the News at One about how the LE Niamh recovered 14 bodies from a wooden barge in the Mediterranean.

From the interview …

Captain David Barry: “Yesterday morning, she [LE Niamh] was tasked to carry out a rescue on a barge and this was north of Tripoli, Libya.

She picked up about 240 people from that and later that day she was tasked with a second vessel. They came across another an ex- it would have been an ex-fishing vessel with approximately 500 people on board. This vessel was grossly overcrowded. Even by the standards of what is happening down there and some of the people on board told our crew that there were casualties on board. So we transferred 210 people to our ship and a further, approximately 300, to a Médecins Sans Frontières ship, Dignity 1. At this stage, it was dark and our people carried out a search of the vessel, where unfortunately we found the remains of 14 people below decks.”

Defence Forces find 14 people crushed to death on overcrowded barge

The LÉ Niamh is now proceeding to port in Silicly, where Italian authorities will commence an investigation.

FOURTEEN BODIES HAVE been recovered from an overcrowded barge some 80km west of Tripoli by the crew of the LÉ Niamh.

A further 210 migrants were rescued from the craft.

The Defence Forces’ Captain David Barry said it appeared they had been crushed to death.

According to a statement from the Defence Forces, the Irish Naval Service vessel commenced a rescue operation in tandem with a Medécins Sans Frontiére ship at around 4.30pm yesterday afternoon, after a wooden barge was discovered with around 500 migrants on board.

Searches carried out of the migrant vessel, after passengers had been transferred, uncovered 14 bodies below deck.

It’s believed the barge had only left the Libyan capital that morning.

“From where they were located, which was well below decks on the vessel, it would be our estimation that they died simply from overcrowding – from crushing and asphyxiation,” Captain Barry told RTÉ’s News at One.

Now, we’re not medical experts obviously – there will be procedures carried out to determine that, but on the face of it it looks to be a result of overcrowding.
The Defence Forces vessel is now proceeding to port in Sicily, where Italian authorities will commence an investigation.

The ship also rescued 243 migrants in a separate operation earlier yesterday. Prior to yesterday’s missions, the crew had already rescued 827 people (672 men, 123 women and 32 children).

The Niamh was deployed to the Mediterranean on 10 July, taking over from another Irish vessel, the LÉ Eithne.

It followed a search and rescue operation off the coast of Libya, during which 210 migrants were rescued. The bodies of the 14 people were found below the deck of the barge. It was the second rescue operation for the Irish naval vessel yesterday. Earlier in the day the crew rescued 243 migrants off another barge in the same area. The LE Niamh has replaced the LE Eithne on the mercy mission in the Mediterranean which continues until September.

Rescuers find 13 dead migrants on packed boat off Libyan coast

Rome – Rescuers found 13 dead migrants on a boat off the coast of Libya with more than 500 others aboard, an Italian coast guard spokesperson said on Tuesday, giving no details about how they had died. An Irish naval ship, mobilised as part of the EU’s Triton mission, and one operated by the Doctors Without Borders charity went to the rescue of the boat about 80km off Libya late on Monday. The bodies were taken onto the Irish ship. Authorities are yet to decide where to take the survivors, the spokesman said.
