French police on Tuesday moved to dismantle a months-old migrant camp in north-central Paris where some 400 people lived in cramped and squalid conditions.

Police started rounding up the migrants – most of them Sudanese, Somalis and Eritreans – at the site, located under the metro tracks at La Chapelle subway station, a stone’s throw away from the Eurostar terminal linking Paris to London, early Tuesday, according to an AFP journalist at the scene.

It was not immediately clear where the migrants would go after the camp is dismantled, though health workers and aid organisations were present on Tuesday to help relocate them.

Paris City Hall has insisted on the need to offer accommodation to all the camp’s inhabitants, whether or not they are seeking asylum in France. But the capital’s emergency shelters are already at saturation point.

Police had warned in recent days of plans to clear the camp on health grounds.

FRANCE 24 visited the site last week, finding a haphazard collection of tents and mattresses riddled with rubbish and soaking in urine that leaked from portable toilets nearby.

The camp’s inhabitants said they had travelled through Libya before embarking on the perilous crossing of the Mediterranean to Italy. Some said they hoped to stay in France while others planned to go on to the United Kingdom.

Health officials also interviewed the migrants last week, drawing up a list of around 160 asylum seekers and another 200 people „in transit“ towards other destinations.

Prior to the police operation, some of the migrants had already left the camp to set up another one near Austerlitz train station in the capital’s south-east.
