Der Frachter, der aus der Türkei gestartet und in der Nacht im süditalienischen Gallipoli angekommen ist, hat fast 1.000 vor allem syrische, aber auch kurdische Flüchtlinge an Bord. Unter ihnen sind viele Kinder und Frauen, auch Hochschwangere. Der Frachter hat überaus lange für die Seestrecke gebraucht. Griechenland hatte den Flüchtlingsfrachter inspiziert, mit Marine und Küstenwache. Aus Griechenland sollen auch die Desinformationen über Bewaffnete stammen. Später waren italienische Militärs auf dem Frachter gelandet, sie haben ihn in den Hafen von Gallipoli gesteuert.

CLOSE to breaking point, and devastated by the recent death of one of their own, some 60 Syrian refugees from the 337 rescued off the coast in September en route to Italy are tired of waiting, they said during a protest they held yesterday outside the House.
The death of the 25-year-old man – he was found hanged in a park near the presidential palace on Friday – motivated the refugees from the Kokkinotrimithia camp to take to the streets, they said.

A bordo del Norman Atlantic c’erano 499 persone, i morti accertati sono 11 e 8 i corpi finora recuperati. Non ci sono notizie di 179 persone, ma gran parte di questi potrebbero essere su due mercantili in viaggio verso la Grecia che si erano avvicinati al luogo dell’incidente del traghetto della Visemar noleggiato dalla Anek Lines. Sono i numeri aggiornati del procuratore capo di Bari Giuseppe Volpe sulla tragedia della nave incendiata e finita alla deriva tra le coste della Puglia e dell’Albania da oltre due giorni. Numeri aggiornati, ma non certi. Non è chiaro, ha detto il procuratore, quanti clandestini vi fossero a bordo (3 sono già sicuri); non è chiaro quanti passeggeri fossero saliti in overbooking (i sicuri sono 18). Che i numeri non tornassero si era capito già nelle scorse ore quando era emerso che tra le 310 persone recuperate 80 non figuravano nelle liste di passeggeri e membri dell’equipaggio (che non sono controllate in maniera severa come in aeroporto, ma comunque dovrebbero essere verificate).
