Residents and shop owners in parts of central Athens have told Kathimerini that an increasing number of derelict buildings are being occupied by activists and refugees and that appeals to the police and local authorities to intervene have failed to produce a solution.

More than 15 buildings have been occupied in the city center, Exarchia and surrounding areas, Kathimerini understands. In all cases, police are unable to intervene as they must first receive a complaint from the owners of the properties and, in several cases, it is unclear who they are.

Mehr als 180 000 Migranten sind vergangenes Jahr über das Mittelmeer nach Italien gekommen, so viele wie noch nie. Die Aufnahmezentren sind überfüllt. Ein neuer Konflikt mit der EU ist programmiert.

Die Ankunft von Bootsflüchtlingen in Sizilien und anderen Regionen Süditaliens sorgt weltweit kaum mehr für Schlagzeilen. Doch der Strom der Migranten, die von Libyen aus in Richtung Europa aufbrechen, lässt nicht nach. 2016 war sogar ein neues Rekordjahr. Laut dem Uno-Flüchtlingshilfswerk (UNHCR) sind 181 436 Bootsflüchtlinge nach Italien gebracht worden. Im Vorjahr waren es 153 842 gewesen. Während in Griechenland nur noch wenige Boote ankommen, seit die EU im März ein Abkommen mit der Türkei geschlossen hat, herrscht auf dem Mittelmeer vor der libyschen Küste selbst im Winter Hochbetrieb. Die italienische Küstenwache, europäische Rettungskräfte und private Helfer retten noch immer täglich Hunderte von Menschen aus Seenot.

Cédric Herrou, who was previously arrested for aiding eight Eritreans, faces up to five years in jail and €30,000 fine if convicted

A French farmer, who has become a local hero for helping African migrants cross the border from Italy and giving them shelter, has gone on trial for aiding illegal arrivals.

Cédric Herrou is one of three people to appear before courts in southern France for assisting people fleeing to Europe.

The 37-year-old activist, accused of “helping undocumented foreigners enter, move about and reside” in France, faces up to five years in prison and a €30,000 (£25,500) fine if convicted.

«Il bilancio dell’approccio hotspot non può che considerarsi deficitario ed evidenziare un sostanziale fallimento del piano europeo: a fronte del raggiungimento di un tasso di identificazioni di oltre il 94 per cento, non sono corrisposti risultati positivi in termini di persone ricollocate e persone rimpatriate». Qualche numero: «Alla fine di dicembre 2016, sono state ricollocate dall’Italia in altri Stati membri solo 2.350 persone sul totale di 40.000 previste dal piano europeo». Appena il 5 per cento.

Le mosse del ministro dell’Interno Minniti per far condividere le sue misure anche agli enti locali, in vista della Conferenza Stato-Regioni del 18 gennaio. I nuovi centri dovranno essere piccoli e possibilmente fuori dalle città, ospiteranno solo immigrati con una pericolosità sociale e ci sarà una commissione per il controllo degli standard umanitari

Centri piccoli, da massimo 80-100 persone, sparsi per tutta Italia e possibilmente vicino agli aeroporti. Così il ministro dell’Interno Marco Minniti prova a rispondere alle critiche sulla sua proposta di Capodanno: un piano di riapertura dei Centri di identificazione ed espulsione (Cie) per accelerare i rimpatri. Sono “inutili”, spesso sono “gestiti dalle mafie” e “piacciono a Mafia Capitale”, ha detto ieri Beppe Grillo dal suo blog. La proposta non è piaciuta neanche alla Caritas: “Abbiamo verificato che sono costosi, inefficaci e non riescono a raggiungere l’obiettivo per cui sono nati”. Ma l’idea dei Cie preoccupa soprattutto molti governatori ed è su questo fronte che il Viminale sta lavorando, per presentare le nuove misure il prossimo 18 gennaio, quando ci sarà la conferenza Stato-Regioni.

Un jeune homme de 18 ans s’est immolé par le feu le 2 janvier devant un poste de gendarmerie royale à Asmrir, dans la localité de Tinghir, alors qu’il désespérait de recevoir un document administratif qu’on lui refusait, nous apprend Khadija Heddane, présidente de la section locale de l’Association marocaine des droits de l’homme (AMDH) à Tinghir.

45 migrants secourus au large des côtes de Nador

Trois corps ont été repêchés, et une personne a été admise à l’hôpital lors du sauvetage de clandestins naufragés au large de Nador.

Quarante-cinq clandestins subsahariens ont été secourus, le 4 janvier, après le naufrage de leur embarcation pneumatique au large de Nador, au niveau de la commune Beni Chiker, selon les autorités locales citées par la MAP.

Various NGOs report that they continued in the early hours of the first day of 2017 to rescue migrants from the Mediterranean Sea setting off from Libya.

The Maltese-based Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) rescue ship, the Aquarius, carried out its first search and rescue operation just outside Libyan territorial waters in the early hours of the first of January 2017 saving 114 people. The horror continues’’ reported MSF.

As authorities seek to improve living conditions for migrants at reception centers around the country amid forecasts of another cold snap later this week, a 20-year-old Afghan man died of hypothermia early on Tuesday after crossing the Evros River in northern Greece.

The man’s body was found in a field near the Greek border town of Didymoteicho after police were alerted by another Afghan who said he had traveled with him across the river.

Temperatures in the area plunged to -14 Celsius (7 Fahrenheit) on Monday night and are expected to drop even further from Thursday.

Yesterday, the Bulgarian border police found the corpse of a woman near the village of Ravadinovo in southeastern Bulgaria. A group of 31 migrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia, which was detained one day before, said to the authorities they had to leave the woman, because she was too weak to go on. Two other members of the group, 14-and 16-year old teenagers, were brought to hospital because of frostbite.

This is the first human being who was killed by the European border system in Bulgaria, in 2017. Bordermonitoring Bulgaria (BMB) argues that the new installed European Border and Coast Guard Agency, which came into force on October the 6th 2016 at Bulgaria’s Kapitan Andreevo Border Checkpoint, cannot stop incidents like this. Therefore, it is tremendously important to create legal passages to prevent these kind of tragedies.
