The so-called “Arab Spring”, among its multiple outgrowths, has generated a new massive flow of immigrants from North Africa towards Europe. The 2011 Libyan civil war resulted in one million refugees moving to the neighboring countries, which Tunisia was the most affected one with almost 350.000 migrants arriving from Libya, according to IOM data.

„Dimitris Avramopoulos, the European commissioner in charge of migration, said sending those home who were simply seeking a better life and did not merit asylum would serve as a deterrent to people trying to cross the Mediterranean. A more effective policy of returning those people would also help maintain public support for protecting people most in need. Avramopoulos wrote to EU ministers to call for the EU’s so-called return policy to be stepped up, in a letter seen by Reuters.“

16 June 2015 – The ability of migrants to reach European soil despite a huge investment in securing international borders shows that sealing them is impossible, and only serves to empower people traffickers in the Mediterranean, a United Nations independent expert said today.
“The European Union (EU) must recognize that irregular migration is a result of policies prohibiting immigration,” the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, François Crépeau, addressing the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. “Such policies only serve to open a new and lucrative market for smuggling rings, which could not exist without this prohibition.”

Seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg haben nicht mehr so viele Menschen innerhalb eines Jahres die Flucht ergriffen. Insgesamt sind es 60 Millionen.
BERLIN taz | Die Zahl der Flüchtlinge weltweit ist 2014 auf einen Rekordwert gestiegen. Nach Zählung des UN-Flüchtlingswerks UNHCR waren im Dezember 59,5 Millionen Menschen auf der Flucht. Ein Jahr zuvor waren es 51,2 Millionen – ein Anstieg um etwa 16 Prozent. Ein höherer Zuwachs wurde noch nie dokumentiert. Schon der Vorjahreswert war der höchste seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Rund zwei Drittel aller Flüchtlinge bleiben im eigenen Land, mehr als die Hälfte sind Kinder.
