Working with international organisations, Google plans to provide refugees with information critical for their journeys.
Google has announced the launch of a „Crisis Info Hub“ to help refugees seeking asylum around the world by providing critical information for their journeys.

„Working with the International Rescue Committee and Mercy Corps, we’ve developed an open source project called Crisis Info Hub to disseminate such information in a lightweight, battery-saving way,“ the statement said.
So far, the website only has information on the Greek island of Lesbos, the main point of entry to Europe for refugees travelling on boats across the Mediterranean. More locations will be added shortly, the company said, asking volunteers with language skills to contribute.
The website offers information in English and Arabic on registration centres and legislation, accommodation, transport, medical care, and banking services.
Google’s new platform comes after a month after a fundraiser run by the company managed to collect $5.5m in just two days for the refugee crisis. Google said the funds were used to support the work of organisations including Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Europe is facing its worst refugee crisis in decades, with at least 680,000 people arriving by sea this year.
Many of them first land on the shores of Greek islands. Greece has seen a record 48,000 migrants and refugees arriving in the space of just five days, the International Organisation for Migration said on Friday.
More than half of those crossing from Turkey had landed on Lesbos, which saw 27,276 arrivals between October 17 and 21.

Google gaat vluchtelingen voorlichten
Google gaat vluchtelingen helpen met het vinden van de juiste weg en met het vinden van informatie in Europa. Met een ‚crisis info hub‘ laat het bedrijf vluchtelingen zien waar zij zich kunnen registeren, waar ze medische hulp kunnen krijgen, waar ze kunnen slapen en hoe het zit met transport.
Uit gesprekken met internationale hulporganisaties bleek dat het gebrek aan bijgewerkte lokale informatie een van de grootste problemen is voor vluchtelingen. Omdat veel vluchtelingen een smartphone hebben waar ze informatie mee opzoeken, heeft het Amerikaanse bedrijf een mobiele site ontwikkeld. Hierop wordt met behulp van hulporganisaties per locatie belangrijke informatie verzameld.
Door een zwarte achtergrond en simpele vormgeving is de site volgens Google gebruiksvriendelijk en accu-besparend. Op de site is op dit moment alleen nog maar informatie over het Griekse eiland Lesbos te vinden. De bedoeling is dat er snel meerdere plaatsen in Europa volgen.
Op plekken waar bijna of helemaal geen mobiel internet is, wil Google netwerken opzetten. Dat doen ze in samenwerking met NetHope, een bedrijf dat gespecialiseerd is in het leveren van internetverbindingen op plekken waar humanitaire hulp nodig is.
Vertalers
Daarnaast heeft het internetbedrijf Arabisch als standaardtaal toegevoegd aan hun vertaalfunctie. Deze functie maakt het mogelijk om, ook offline, teksten te vertalen. Uit zoekgegevens bleek dat het aantal vertaalverzoeken naar het Arabisch dit jaar alleen al in Duitsland vijf keer hoger ligt dan vorig jaar.
Mensen die de taal van de vluchtelingen spreken of van het land waar ze doorheen reizen, worden door Google gevraagd te helpen bij het verbeteren van de vertaalfunctie. Vooral aan mensen die Arabisch en/of Duits spreken, is een gebrek.
