Die Zahl der Migrant*innen, die in Italien ankommen, ist seit dem Juli 2017 erstmals wieder gestiegen, und zwar um 15% gegenüber dem Januar 2017. Allerdings haben sich die Routen verlagert: zunehmend mehr kommen aus Tunesien und der Türkei.

Dall’inizio dell’anno sono sbarcati in Italia 2.749 migranti, il 14,88% in più rispetto allo stesso periodo dello scorso anno. Lo dicono i dati del ministero dell’Interno. Ed è la prima volta che succede dal luglio scorso. Ma la novità di questo gennaio brucia al Viminale. Così i dati degli sbarchi vengono spacchettati: si sottolinea dunque che 2.195 sono quelli che provengono dalla Libia (l’anno scorso erano stati 2.226); i restanti 749 vengono perlopiù da Turchia e Tunisia.

MADRID — The smugglers took Rodriguez Tankeu’s savings and disappeared, leaving the 25-year-old bewildered near Tripoli, the Libyan capital. The former car mechanic headed to Algeria, where he saw, one by one, all the spots on engine-powered boats go to wealthier migrants.

Broke, tired and desperate, he moved further west.

“Morocco was my last hope,” he says. “It was either making it to Europe or giving up for once and for all.”

Algeria and Morocco are increasingly popular points of departure for economic migrants and asylum-seekers whose arrivals more than doubled last year along the hazardous Western Mediterranean passage into Europe.

BARDONECCHIA, Italy (Reuters) – It took Abdullhai almost three years to get from his home in Guinea to a rocky, snow-covered Alpine mountain pass in the dead of winter, for what he hopes will be the final stage of his journey into France.

The terrain is steep and dangerous and he and a group of five other migrants face risks ranging from losing their footing on steep drops, being struck by falling rocks or succumbing to the -9C (15°F) temperatures in clothing ill-suited to the terrain.

This report tries to fill in the gaps to better understand the smuggling networks facilitating irregular migration.

This report examines the smuggling networks facilitating irregular migration from the Horn of Africa to countries in the Arabian Peninsula, also referred to as the Gulf. In addition to analysing the structure and modus operandi of migrant smuggling networks, the author considers the extent to which these networks are involved in other forms of organised criminal activity, such as arms and narcotics trafficking. The report concludes with recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders operating in the Horn of Africa and Yemen.

About the author

Peter Tinti is an independent journalist focusing on conflict, human rights and organised crime. Tinti has written and contributed to several reports on organised crime in the Sahel, narcotics trafficking in Mali, and migrant smuggling networks in Africa, Asia and Europe. Tinti’s writing and photography have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy, and Vice, among other outlets. Advertised as a „tourist yacht“ to Europe, spacious and loaded with food and water, it was in fact a stripped-down, rusty blue fishing boat lacking any supplies for two stormy days at sea. Almost 160 men, women, and children were crammed on board, sick and fearful as the boat rocked violently from side to side, its leaky hold taking on water.

For Iraqi asylum-seeker Ahmed* and his family, transported to the vessel in the middle of the night and initially kept in the dark about their true destination – Romania – the experience was terrifying. “When I saw [the boat], I said, ‘Oh my god!’” recalled the former army sniper from Kirkuk, explaining that he refused to board until a smuggler with a handgun threatened to kill his family.

Over the last few months, reports of migrant boats being intercepted in the Black Sea have proliferated, along with tales of the tragedies that occur when the vessels capsize in its rough waters. This route from Turkey to Romania is not entirely new – it was used in Soviet times to ply illicit goods – but it appears smugglers are now attempting to revive it.
