Première université du CADTM Afrique

Le CADTM Afrique organise ce week-end sa première université à Hammamet en Tunisie. Après avoir été le pays hôte du Forum Social Mondial il y a un an, la Tunisie accueille cette fois l’université du CADTM Afrique. Des citoyens sont venus des quatre coins d’Afrique – Burkina Faso, Togo, Bénin, Cameroun, République démocratique du Congo, Mali, Niger, Sénégal, Maroc et Tunisie – pour échanger sur la dette et différentes thématiques comme les ressources naturelles, l’audit et les dettes coloniales.

Asylum claims submitted in 10 major receiving countries

GENEVA, March 21 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency on Friday issued a report saying there was a sharp rise in asylum claims in 44 industrialized countries over the course of last year, driven primarily by the crisis in Syria.

UNHCR’s „Asylum Trends 2013“ report says 612,700 people applied for asylum in North America, Europe, East Asia and the Pacific last year – the highest total for any year since 2001.

The police tried to blackmail them: they should sign not to approach the EU delegation office again, otherwise they keep imprisoned. But the group refused to sign and afterwards they were split up by police into two or three persons and were brought to different far areas to destroy the collective.

British Ambassador urges government to take action over migrant rights

The British Ambassador to Libya, Michael Aron, has urged the government to ensure that migrants rights are fully met, after seeing “extremely challenging” conditions faced by migrants in detention centres.

“Improving migrant documentation would be a first step to tackle the problem, along with improving the asylum process,” Aron said, after visiting the Surman detention centre for women and children. “I encourage the Libyan Government to address these issues and ensure that migrant rights are met.”

„Angesichts der wiederholten Drohungen und Erpressungen Putins wird es höchste Zeit, dass wir uns nach anderen, sicheren Öllieferanten umsehen“ – der Leserkommentar zu einem Artikel der Zeit über die riesigen libyschen Öl-und Gasvorkommen, „die alle wollen“, stammt von 2008. Er hat nichts an Aktualität eingebüßt. Auch der Guardian verwies diese Woche darauf, wie wichtig die Öl-und Gasvorkommen des nordafrikanischen Landes als alternative Energiequelle für Europa sind, die sich derzeit über ihre Abhängigkeit zu Russland klar werden. Doch ist die politische Situation in Libyen derart, dass westliche Ölfirmen nervös werden.

The main news (expressed with more or less alarmist and racist undertones) are:

  • around 12.200 migrants have been “rescued” so far by Mare Nostrum (some articles speak of 13.500, not sure what is the difference). Only from the beginning of the year there have been around 8.500 arrivals (2.000 in the past few days), ten times more than last year;
  • the costs of the operations (so this article says) have not been officially confirmed, but it is believed that Mare Nostrum costs around 9 millions € a month, whereas the previous operations of the Coast Guard and the Guadia di Finanza costed 1,5 millions €. The commander of the Italian Navy, Luigi Binelli Mantelli, said that the special funding that had been allocated to the operation has now finished and the operations is being conducted with the „normal“ budged by the Italian Navy. It is not clear what will happen for the summer.
