La ONG guipuzcoana Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario, que desde 2015 trata de “salvaguardar” la vida de las personas que huyen de persecuciones por el Mar Egeo, se ha unido a los bomberos sevillanos de Proem-Aid para lanzar la campaña #MaydayTerráneo. Ambas organizaciones realizaron ayer un llamamiento a la colaboración ciudadana para financiar el Proyecto AitaMari que pretende reforzar el dispositivo de rescate independiente del Mediterráneo Central con una embarcación. Para ello, necesitan una financiación de 250.000 euros, de los cuales estas organizaciones ya han puesto 50.000 como “primera piedra”.

What country are most of Europe’s illegal migrants coming from? You might think Syria or some other war-torn nation. You would be wrong. According to the International Organization for Migration, the top “sending” country is a democracy that claims to have made strides in human development: Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi migrants are paying between $8,000 and $9,000 just to get to Libya, and an additional $700 for an uncertain passage across the Mediterranean to Italy.

The vast majority are looking for work — and migrant work has always been risky. Thousands of Bangladeshi workers have died  working in Middle Eastern countries. More than 8,000 bodies were returned to Bangladesh from 2004 to 2009, out of roughly 3.7 million Bangladeshi workers in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain  and Oman in 2009. Employers often subject workers to inhumane working conditions and hold them hostage by confiscating their passports.

These migrant workers are trapped in foreign countries, unable to return home.

About 5,000 refugees bound for Italy were rescued in waters off the coast of Libya between Thursday and Saturday morning by Italian and Libyan coastguards, according to statements from both countries.

About 2,900 people were rescued on Thursday, 2,300 of whom were found in international waters and taken to Italy, while 580 picked up in Libyan waters were returned to the north African country.

Through Friday until Saturday morning, coastguards rescued another 2,100 refugees packed in 17 vessels, but found the body of one man who drowned, the Italian coastguard said.

The surviving refugees told the Reuters news agency of arbitrary detention, slavery and beatings in Libya.

The government of human mobility might well be the most important problem to confront the world during the first half of the 21st century.

Worldwide, the combination of fast capitalism and the saturation of the everyday by digital and computational technologies have led to the acceleration of speed and the intensification of connections. Ours is, in this regard, an era of planetary entanglement. Yet, wherever we look, the drive is decisively towards enclosure.

If this trend persists, tomorrow’s world will increasingly be a gated world, with myriad enclaves, culs-de-sac and shifting, mobile and diffuse borders.

The capacity to decide who can move and who can settle, where and under what conditions, will be at the core of the political struggles over sovereignty.

Plus de 1200 ressortissants marocains expulsés d’Espagne en 2016

En 2016, l’Espagne a procédé à l’expulsion de 1237 ressortissants marocains qui se trouvaient illégalement en Espagne, précise le quotidien Akhbar Al Youm dans sa livraison du jeudi 18 Mai.

C’est un vaste coup de filet migratoire que viennent d’opérer les autorités ibériques. Citant des chiffres du ministère de l’intérieur Espagnol, la publication précise qu’il s’agit de la plus nombreuse communauté expulsée du territoire espagnol. Un grand nombre, soit 1219, a été expulsé vers le Maroc via Sebta, tandis que 18 autres l’ont été via Melilia. Le retour de 868 ressortissants algériens s’est par ailleurs effectué via Alméria.

Selon des rapports espagnols cités par Akhbar Al Youm, ce refoulement vers le pays d’origine ne concerne pas seulement les sans-papiers, mais aussi des migrants auteurs de crimes, impliqués dans des affaires de trafic de drogue, ou encore de terrorisme. Et de noter que le nombre de migrants marocains expulsés en 2016 a nettement diminué par rapport à 2012, où pas moins de 1638 ressortissants ont été refoulés dans 99 opérations, effectués via les présides occupés de Sebta et Melilia.

Überraschend schnell vernimmt Karlsruhe syrische Opfer, die Strafanzeige gegen Geheimdienstvertreter in Damaskus gestellt haben. Gezielte Ermittlungen und internationale Haftbefehle könnten folgen.

Abir Farhud spricht routiniert. Sie erzählt nicht zum ersten Mal, dass der Leiter der Abteilung 215 des Militärgeheimdienstes in Damaskus alle Frauen nacheinander in sein Büro bestellt. Wie auch sie sich hat ausziehen müssen und er ihre Brüste betatscht hat. Das war im Dezember 2012. Die 30jährige Absolventin der Kunsthochschule Damaskus hatte friedlich demonstriert, Medikamente durch Checkpoints geschmuggelt und Lautsprecher in Mülleimern versteckt, um öffentliche Plätze mit Revolutionsliedern zu beschallen. „Eine tolle Zeit“, erinnert sie sich.

Bis zu ihrer Festnahme. Während die anderen Frauen in ihrer Zelle vor allem mit Schlägen und Elektroschocks gequält wurden, kämpfte Abir mit psychologischer Folter. „Sie haben mich vor den Soldaten nackt in den Korridor gestellt und gedroht, sie würden meine Jungfräulichkeit testen, weil ich eine Hure der Freien Syrischen Armee sei“, sagt die Aktivistin. Die Demütigungen und Beleidigungen seien so verletzend gewesen, dass sie sich manchmal Schläge mit dem Stock statt mit Worten gewünscht hätte, fügt sie hinzu.

Tataouine : nouveau tir de sommation pour repousser les manifestants

L’armée nationale a effectué un nouveau tir de sommation suite à la tentative des manifestants à El Kamour de s’accéder à l’unité de contrôle du pompage de gaz. 

D’importants renforts militaires viennent d’arriver sur place et la tension est palpable.

La ville de Tataouine connait aussi une suspension totale de la circulation après la fermeture des routes en signe de solidarité avec les manifestants a indiqué le correspondant de Mosaïque FM Habib Chaabani.

Coastguard rescues over 500 off Sabratha and Garabulli

Over 500 migrants whose boats were in difficulty were rescued this morning in two separate operations by the Libyan coastguard.

According to Commodore Ayoub Qasim, the Libyan naval spokesman, some 400 people aboard what he called a “rowing boat” were rescued off Sabratha, 80 kilometres east of Tripoli. Another 120 were rescued off Garabulli, 60 kilometres east of the capital.

At a press conference to announce the rescues, Qasim again defended the conduct of the coastguard in the dispute with German NGO Sea-Watch which has accused it of interfering in a rescue operation, endangering the lives of its own crew as well as of some 500 migrants it was trying to rescue.

Libya receives refurbished patrol boats from Italy

Italy formally handed over four refurbished Bigliani-class patrol boats to Libya’s Tripoli-based coastguard on 15 May as part of an effort to stem illegal immigration from North Africa to Europe, the Italian Foreign Ministry announced.

It added that the four patrol boats were repaired in Gaeta, Italy and that by June the Libyan Coast Guard will receive another six patrol boats of an unidentified type that are being repaired in Tunisia, making it the „strongest [coastguard] in North Africa“.

Six Bigliani boats that were originally built for Italy’s Guarda di Finanza were transferred to the Libyan Coast Guard in 2009-10.
